Antique Victorian Staffordshire Transferware Platter'Cathedral Scene' 1840's A Very Large& Deep Platter DESCRIPTION A very pretty English Staffordshire transferware pattern. This is an antique from circa 1840. The pattern is one that was made by several different pottery makers in Staffordshire at the time. Alcocks and Whitehaven among them. We don't know the name of the pattern, some folks refer to it as'GEM' but we're not sure that is the correct pattern name. Lovers of Blue and White do have the same pattern listed on their website with that as the name, so perhaps it is correct. There is no backstamp on this platter. No matter what the name. It is a striking pattern with handsome Chinese design elements both in the wide outer rim with it's flowering nut border and feather plumes and the inner border ... moreof elaborate lattice work encircling a towering cathedral scene. Just a fabulous early 19th century English Staffordshire transfer design. This is a beautiful platter and very large and deep. It has a wide flat rim and is in very good condition. What amazes me is the condition of this beautiful 12 1/2" X 9 1/2" octagonal ironstone platter made in England in the late 1800's. There is no evidence of crazing on the front. Only on the back. There are no chips or cracks. It is in beautiful shape for its age. I left the metal hanger on the platter. Stamp on back says T. J. J. Mayer Rhone Scenery with the lion above. Antique Blue and White Asian Pheasant Transferware Platter
This is a lovely blue and White Asian Pheasant Staffordshire Transferware platter. It measures 13 1/2" X 11" It is the traditional floral with the bird and butterfly. There is some crazing around the scalloped edges. But no nicks, chips or hairline cracks. There are a couple of small oxidation spots, smaller than an eraser on the end of a pencil. I think you can see if you zoom in on the whole platter. There are no markings on its back. I believe it is from around 1870. The color is fabulous and for its age it is in great shape! It has been part of my collection for many years, but I am downsizing.

There is a hairline crack on the rim about 2" length. Light crazing in center and utensil marks. The platter has no mark and measures 13.5" length. Good condition with no chips or cracks. The oblong serving bowl measures 9x6" by 2" deep. There are old hairline cracks in bottom center of bowl with lots of brown craze lines. Love the scenes on the exterior of the bowl as well. The last piece is a tab handle oblong bowl measuring 9" length by 5.25" wide and 1.5" deep. 2 chips on the bottom base rim of bowl, impressed P on the bottom. From the estate of a major CT collector comes this pair of ca 1845 John Meir English Staffordshire Wild Rose 14 1/8" X 11 1/4" platter in excellent antique condition with no chips. Cracks or dings. The scene depicts Nuneham Courtenay. Oxfordshire, the seat of the Earl Harcourt, set in grounds laid out by Capability Brown around 1780. There are flaws in the doubled transfer decoration(early seconds I guess) and some light crazing, but they ring true. Their impressed with an indecipherable mark. One is approximately a 1/2" crack in the ceramic that was not filled with glaze and the other is a small point were the ceramic was not filled with glaze. Some signs of wear on the bottom side. large antique blue white transferware platter 19th century
This large blue and white transfer ware platter is a treasure measuring 17 1/2" x 13" The mark on the back I believe reads"circassia" and"S& JB" and probably dates to the 1860- 1880's. It is in remarkable condition and has NO chips. Cracks or hairlines. You can see in the pictures that there is some discoloration related to it's age but most of it is on the back side. A good soaking in peroxide should help immensely. This platter is thick and heavy. I pack extremely well so bid with ease.

Manufactured by Ridgways in the mid-1800s with the popular"Wild Rose" border surrounding the central scene of"Nuneham Courtenay" near Oxford) This pattern was used by many pottery manufacturers in the Staffordshire area in the early 19th century, who sometimes identified their firms and sometimes not. The fact that this one doesn't have a manufacturer's stamp suggests it's an earlier 19th century piece; there is an impress mark. However, that I am unable to decipher. The swirl pattern on the bottom also hints at an early manufacturing date. T he platter measures 15 7/8" across by 12 7/8" tall by 1 1/4" deep. It is in excellent antique condition. Antique Brown and White Transferware Platter by Shaw's - 1853, England
Lovely old brown and white transferware platter. Manufactured August 8, 1853 by Shaw's. The platter measures 13 1/2" across by 10 1/4" tall by 1 1/4" deep. The pattern is"Peruvian Horse Hunt" and the center transfer as well as the cartouche scenes around the rim have exceptional detail. You get the sense of movement of the horses and you can read the expressions on the faces. On the underside is a fabulous stamp by the manufacturer. Including a registration mark that tells the exact date of manufacture. Those are its pluses; now to its shortcomings. It's been well-loved and has a large old crack evident on the underside(see picture#9) however. That crack isn't really evident on the front(see picture#10) What is evident is that the platter has a lot of crazing and the glaze has absorbed aging. It's ... morenot pristine white but rather a warm beige. The edges of the underside of the bowl of the platter too are worn. I think this is all part of the charm but I leave you best decide. The platter measures 13 1/2" across by 10 1/4" tall by 1 1/4" deep. I did my best to capture the style and quality in pictures. Gorgeous. Very old blue and white transferware platter in"Rural Village" pattern from my mother's estate. She was an antique dealer who loved blue and white, and found she couldn't bear to part with this one. The dealer from whom she bought it claimed it was an Andrew Stevenson piece, but I'm doubtful because it lacks his stamp. I believe. Based upon my research, that it was manufactured in the early 1800s by James and Ralph Clews. Of Cobridge, Staffordshire, where Stevenson also manufactured at that time, due to the crown of the type they used. In the center of the mark. This pattern was known also as"Village Church" for obvious reasons) and the border mimics to a great extent the well-known"Wild Rose" pattern. The platter is in excellent antique condition. John Ridgway Blue Transfer University Platter 13" x 10" C. 1841-1855. I have for auction this wonderful blue white transferware up for auction. It has a s croll& diaper border around rim with 6 scenic cartouches& is eight sided. The university ihas center view with figures at the entrance& stately building with domed tower beyond in medium blue. This scene is on a white background. Crown. Garter& ribbon back stamp" University J.R. Co' of John Ridgway. Cauldon Place, Hanley, Staffordshire. Godden marks#3257& 3259. 1841- 1855 Small tiny glaze bubble pops on surface& on the back of rim the porcelain has slightly darkened with age. No chips. Cracks, hairlines, nor restorations. Early Circa 1850-1860 English transferware pedestal cake stand. Stand is 11.5" in diameter and is 3" high. As you can see in the pics there are a few chips around the edge and some brown staining on the top. Kind of to be expected with a piece of this age. Still a very beautiful object. Some light edge wears on rim. Mostly on back side- not chips, just some wear from use. Front has a flea size speck on platter near center, and 1 dip? that absorbed stain around it.
