A shoe polish for blackening shoes. This box is from the late 1800s, and would have held 3 dozen tins of blacking. Measures: 11.5" in length, almost 8" in depth, and 4.75" in height. One of the small metal wires which acts as one of the hinges has broken. It's and easy fix as it's simply two pieces of stiff wire held by a small loop, shown in one of the photos.Name written in pencil faintly can still be seen on box top center. The corners are dovetailed. The wood in general is quite good condition for it's age, no cracking. One small chip to the bottom underside where a nail head is exposed on the frame, minor. As you can see the paper litho on the outside and inside the box top is in quite good condition. Still bright and clean, with some spotting and general age wear. Wonderful. Rare 8 piece Mason's Ironstone washstand/dresser set in their Flying Bird(Pekoe)pattern. All pieces have a light blue transfer pattern, with hand-colored detailing. The pitcher& soap dish lid have cobalt Hydra handles accented in gold. Each of the flying birds throughout the set are outlined(detailed) in gold. The pitcher& wash bowl also have one flower(the same flower on each piece) that is accented in gold. No other parts of the pattern have gold accenting- a nice detail. All pieces have Mason's Ironstone mark& various hand written symbols or letters(mostly in Iron red) The set includes: Large Washbowl- 16" diameter; 5 1/2" tall- note that the outside of the bowl has flowers but there was not enough room to include a picture Large Wash Pitcher w/Hydra handle- 11 1/2" tall; 10 1/2" wide ... morehandle to spout. Soap Bowl w/Lid& Strainer- 5" diameter. 3 1/2" tall w/ lid. Lid has hydra handle. Small Wash Bowl w/ Strainer- 8" diameter w/strainer- 7" w/o. 3" tall w/strainer. Antique Masonic-Masons Lap Ashtray Saddle or Belt—Very Old
This is an extremely rare Masons or Masonic ashtray belt or saddle belt. This was used as an ashtray at Masonic meetings while smoking a cigarette or cigar. It was simply placed over the knee while in a sitting position for easy access to an ashtray. The solid brass masonic symbols weighed each side of the strap down to keep the ashtray in place on top of the lap or knee. I'm not sure if the brass symbols were once used as horse brasses or not. The entire piece does not appear to be home made. It was made very well and does appear to be factory made a long time ago. I had purchased this many years ago at a reputable auction house here in Florida as a Masons ashtray saddle belt. I did recall seeing a similar one in a photograph that was made for another fraternal organization. Which is why I had purchased this particular piece. The belt ... moremeasures 17 1/2” long x 4” wide. The leather is extremely brittle due to it's age and has a very thick and rich natural patina throughout. A few pieces of leather have broken apart around one strap area of the belt as the pics show. I believe this could be repaired by someone that has the patience for meticulous work. Actually, the entire piece needs to be reinforced or inserted into a tight showcase to keep it from moving around. I will ship it by the Box Outlet that I use because it will have to be tightly packaged and shipped professionally. One of the symbols(dog) is stamped England into the brass on the back side. I would guesstimate the piece was made in the early part of the 1800s, and probably English made. A rare and unusual piece for the masonic collector. Antique Masons Ironstone Jug - 6.5" - c.1830 - Japanese Design - Fenton Shape
Antique Jug. Fenton shape, from Mason's Ironstone, dating from circa 1830's. Typical Mason's decoration. On white ground, depicts Japanese scenes featuring homes by the lakeside, pagodas, exotic trees avove rocky outcrop and sailing boats. The shoulder of the jug is decorated with a yellow pattern floral banding, while the inner and outer jug neck features yet more exotic blooms in navy blue and rust colouring. The body, claws and head of a fearsome Hydra/ Dragon forms the jug handle. The jug is in very good condition. Particulary given it's great age. There are no chips or crazing. At the mouth of the hydra, there is a very small crack, and this is reflected in the asking price. In this auction there is an a ntiqu e Mason's Challenge Blacking display box. The box is app roximately 11.5" x 8" x 5" Pl ease note that the 5" box is the rarer of the two sizes made. The other size is 2.5" The box w as made approximately 135 years ago. The box is made of wood and has two labels. One external and one internal. The box use to hold three dozen of the number four size of blacking. The exterior label is on the front o f the bo x. The label shows heavy wear with approximately one third of it missing. However, the label can still be read easily. The box has dovetailed corners. The lid operates well and both original hinges are still attached. The interior label on the in side of the lid has sharp crisp c olors and is full y intact with only light to moderate wear. The wood has no cracks.
