Rare Staffordshire ARCTIC SCENERY Pearlware Platter 1835 Description& Details RARE STAFFORDSHIRETRANSFERWARE PLATTER ARCTIC SCENERY Unknown maker Staffordshire England c. 1835 We are pleased to offer this stunningly beautiful“Arctic Scenery” platter. 13 1/2" long x 11 1/8" across, transfer printed in a rich dark green. The scalloped edge platter features cartouches of tropical wild cats(ocelot, jaguar and leopard) and a water buffalo around the rim separated by garlands of flowers, surrounding a central image of Eskimos building Igloos with dogs, fishermen and a hunter nearby. Featured in Coysh and Henrywood’s“Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery” The series represents episodes catalogued in the 1821 and 1824 illustrated exploration journals of Sir Edward Parry from his travels in an effort to find a north west passage ... morearound northern Canada. The source print of the platter’s central image is the"Sledges of the Esquimaux" from Parry's"Journal of a Second Voyage" Other scenes from the series pattern came from arctic views in John Franklin's"Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the years 1819 to 1822" published in 1823. Here is a rare and wonderful antique blue transfer platter dating from the mid 1800's. It features three beautiful young ladies at lakeside near an urn with a seaside town in the background. It is unmarked and measures approx. 20" long x 16" wide. There are some light and minor brown marks with some minor spot glaze losses on front. A handsome and very unusually shaped small platter that is bordered with blue and red. Examples with this pattern are marked"Hamilton" in Coysh for Robert Hamilton of Stroke active 1811-1826. Nice view of three fishermen and a dog working to bring in netted fish from the river. A large domed building amongst trees is also in the background as well as hills. Skies and waterfowl. 800x600 Rare Child's Miniature Pearlware Platter COTTAGE SCENERY Staffordshire England c.1830 This is an extremely rare historical Staffordshire miniature platter or meat plate. C. 1830. It was made as part of a complete children's toy transferware dinner service. The gently scalloped oval tray measures 4-3/8 inches long with a flared rim and flat bottom. The piece is transfer printed in a rich cobalt blue with a pearlware glaze. The platter is impeccably potted and finely detailed. Depicting the view of a thatched roof cottage with cows grazing in the front yard, and people standing in the backyard, which has a distant view of a church steeple. The figural imagery is so large that it spills over the rim with no room left for a decorative border. The pattern name is unknown and the exact maker has not been identified. The pattern ... moreis illustrated and discussed on page 122 of Lorraine Punchard’s book Playtime Pottery& Porcelain from the United Kingdom& the United States. The quality of the form and detailing of the image is far superior to what would be expected on this diminutive sized piece. A sticker on the back of the platter identifies it as part of the“Sheila French Collection. The platter is in great condition. With a fleabite to the glaze at 4 o'clock and no chips, cracks or repairs. Stilt marks front and back, and minor imperfections original to the making and typical of these early wares, but outstanding overall considering age and scarcity of the form and pattern. The scrolling border with cross shape diaper pattern and flowers reminds me of Spode patterns but this is unmarked, so I can't be sure. It has the same medium to dark blue color of early Spode I've had it could be any number of early Staffordshire potters who produced these types lush floral transferware. The tiny platter or meat plate date to around 1795-1800. It measures 4" long. The hand cut scalloped rim is embellished with cobalt blue feather edge. The platter has early turned bottom. Finished with a pearlware glaze. The platter made by one of the early English potters. Possibly in Staffordshire or Leeds or other northern region in the late 18th or early 19th century. The platter is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Very minor kiln rub on the side of the edge for accuracy sake. Almost perfect. Considering their age and use as childrens toys. It was most likely made as part of a complete children's toy transferware dinner service. The creamy oval soft paste earthenware plate measures 3 1/2 long with a flared rim and flat rimless bottom. The piece is transfer printed in a rich cobalt blue with a pearlware glaze. Hand cut from the mold. The dish is impeccably potted and finely detailed. Depicting the view of a water mill and waterworks wheel with woodland scenery in the background. The pattern name is unknown and the exact maker has not been identified. The quality of the form and detailing of the image is far superior to what would be expected on this diminutive sized piece. The plate is in great condition. With no ... morechips, cracks or repairs.
