Brown Transferwarer Ironstone Platter Enoch Wood & Sons Wreath Flowers c1840 17"
This auction is for a Very Old and Lovely Antique Brown Transferware Ironstone Earthenware Platter made by Enoch Wood& Sons of Burslem. England. It is in the company's Beautiful and Very Hard to Find Wreath and Flowers pattern. The pattern is of a Gothic Church Ruins and Mountains with a Floral and Wreath Border design. The platter measures about 16 3/4 inches long and 14 1/4 inches wide. The piece has a floral spray backstamp with the pattern name. Wreaths& Flowers, and the letters EW&S for Enoch Wood& Sons. Enoch Wood& Sons operated between 1818 and 1846. So this piece is at least 167 years old. It is in very good condition. Especially for that age. There are no chips on the piece. There is a very tight hairline that is tough to spot at about 9 o'clock on the platter. It measures about 1 1/2 inches long(see last ... morephoto) The piece has toning and crazing throughout. Which is expected of ironstone of this era. It only adds to the character and authenticity of the piece and doesn't detract from the images. There are three small glaze pops/fleabites on the edge(see photo 11) The piece has scalloped edges and a deep well and is very thick and heavy. Please check my feedback and buy with confidence. Historical Staffordshire Highlands Hudson River Platter by Enoch Wood 1825 N/R
Here we have a 13" X 10" dark blue Historical Staffordshire platter depicting a view of"Highlands. Hudson River" This scarce platter was made by Enoch Wood& Sons in the 1825 period and is one of his nicer Hudson River views. The sidewheeler steamboat in the foreground flies a large American flag and is said to be the Chancellor Livingston. It is from Wood's Regular Shell Border series and has nice, contrasting transfers as you can see in the scans. Also seen in the scans is the old rivit or cleat repair, as this platter was broken in half probably 100 or more years ago. Even then, they thought enough of it to have it repaired. RARE Enoch Wood& Sons(E.W.S. Fishermen and Castle" made in Burslem. Staffordshire, England c. 1818- 1846 A pair of beautiful Dark Blue transferware Fruit/Dessert Bowls 5 1/2" diameter. 1 1/4" deep The central pattern depicts two men fishing beside the tower of a ruined castle. Fishermen and Castle" is the unofficial name assigned this pattern by the Transferware Collector's Club as no official name has hitherto come to light. The pattern is pictured in Miller Berthoud 1985. An Anthology of British Teapots plate1673, and a Sugar Bowl is pictured in the TWC Database. The border is Floral/Botanical with alternating flowers. There is no backstamp. But there is an impressed Y on one bowl, and a 2 on the other. The condition is excellent. With no damages other that a few faint utensil marks on one bowl only. Description This is an 11 1/2" x 15" Staffordshire deep blue transferware platter entitled The Limehouse Dock. Regent's Canal made by Enoch Wood and Sons between 1818-1846. Five sailing ships and many smaller craft are at anchor before docks and buildings. Illustrated in Laidacker China II 1951. P.100. Limehouse, in Tower Hamlets in the East End of London, is on the north side of the Thames and contained extensive docks from medieval times. These became redundant during the mid 20th century as they did not have sufficient draught to take large container ships. They are now developed as waterfront marinas. This platter has some utensil marks in the bed. But no chips or hairlines.
