Beautiful W.H. Grindley Flow Blue Set of 2 earthenware pottery pieces in the Spring pattern. 1 Square Sauce Bowl measuring approximately 4& 1/2 inches square x 1& 1/8 inches deep. Has 1 flake on a corner and some crazing. I believe the mark on this Bowl dates 1891-1914. 1 Plate measuring approximately 8& 1/2 inches in diameter The Plate has an older stamp- including the word TUNSTALL. Dating it, I believe, to before 1891. Has 4 chips, the largest being approx. 3/4" the other 3 are much smaller, see photos. Also, some light age discoloration. Large Antique Ironstone Platter, W.H. Grindley & Co., England, White, Fluted
Very Large Ironstone Platter manufactured by W. H. Grindley& Co. England in the 1880's/1890's This is a very large and unusually shaped platter. 18" x 13 1/4" x 1 1/2" It is classic Victorian era ironstone with a glossy white glaze. The rim is slightly ruffled or fluted and the overall shape is rectangular but with curved sides. Opposing sides of the inner platter have a little extra curve as well. The variations in shape are subtle. The bottom of the platter is marked W.H. Grindley& Co. England. The hallmark is slightly blurred. Grindley was founded in 1880 in Tunstall. Stoke on Trent, England. The platter is in excellent condition. There are no cracks. Breaks or hairline cracks. There are a few very small nicks to the glaze on one edge which are pictured. Pre-1891 W.H. Grindley & Co. Brown Transferware English Platter 8.75" x 12"
This company was founded by William Harry Grindley at Newfield Pottery. Turnstall, Stroke-on-Trent in 1880. Their earthen and ironstone ware was geared toward the North and South American markets. This platter's scene in the background shows dwellings with turrets and towers. Reminding one of castles. There is a lake or river with a sailboat, and on the bank sits a fisherman. In the foregound is a daffodil plant with other flowers trailing on the ground. Daffodils decorate the outer edge also. The platter is 8.75" x 12" There are a few surface cracks in the white background of the scene. See above photos. The backstamp is the same color brown as the bowl. It shows a globe with a steamship above it. As well as a semi-circle with the word, DAFFODIL. The semi-circle below bears"W. H. GRINDLEY& CO. TUNSTALL. Below all that ... moreis a large diamond shape stamp which shows numbers and letters, as follows: In a small circle on top of the diamond"IV. Next at top is a# 7; to the left is a# 2; to the right is the letter"L. In the bottom of a triangle is a"C" and in the middle is a large"R" with small underlined"d" beside it. Notice also in the second picture above that there is a brown 6(or 9) floating on the back of the flat part of the platter. There are three divets on the back also; one can be seen in side the globe of the W.H. Grindley logo. Still this platter is in very good condition considering its age.
