For auction is a platter made in England between 1818 and 1840. It was exported to the United States approximately 200 years ago. The trademark "E & E ... moreWood" represents Enoch Wood (1759-1840) and his son Edward (1796-1882). Enoch started his lucrative pottery business in 1783, and partnered with his sons in 1818. Enoch died in 1840 and the business closed in 1846. BEAUTIFUL CIRCA 1700-1800S ALABAMA CSA PLANTATION PLATTER MARTHA MCCARTY HISTORY
Be sure to add me to your! THIS IS A VERY OLD ANTIQUE PLANTATION PORCELAIN OR STONEWARE PLATTER. CIRCA 1700-1800. THERE IS A SMALL AMOUNT OF WRITING ON THE BACK THAT HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN THERE A VERY LONG TIME INDICATING THIS BELONGED TO MARTHA MCCARTY, WIFE TO AN ALABAMA CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA ARMY MAN AND PLANTATION OWNER OR HER GRANDFATHER. THIS PLATTERS DESIGN MAY NOT BE ORIGINAL TO THE PIECE AS IT ALMOST LOOKS LIKE A TRANSFER. IT IS A SCENE WITH DIFFERENT VEGATABLES. THERE IS ALOT OF SURFACE LOSS ALL OVER AS SHOWN. I AM NOT SURE OF THE MAKERS MARK ON THE BACK WHICH IS A STAMP WITH A LION AND A HORSE WITH A SHIELD IN BETWEEN THEM. THE PAPER WRITING TAPED TO THE BACK HAS BEEN TORN AND ONLY PIECES REMAIN TO READ IN PART AS'LADY WARE BY_ 1800- GRANDAD'S IN_ MARTHA MCCARTY' SO THIS PIECE COULD EASILY DATE TO THE 1700S. THE ... moreBLANKS INDICATE MISSING PORTIONS OF THE PAPER. ALSO ON THE PIECE LOOKS LIKE'TRUNATORE SRINA JAMES? EDWARDS? BUT NOT POSITIVE. THIS COULD BE AN ALABAMA PLANTATION PIECE WITH THE HISTORICAL INFORMATION ATTACHED TO IT. THERE IS A BIG CHIP OFF THE RIM ABOUT 1"X1/2" AS PICTURED THAT, FOR SOME REASON, LOOKS TO BE OUTLINED WITH SOME TYPE OF MARKER. SEE PHOTO. THERE ARE SEVERAL SCRATCHES AND SURFACE LOSS AS MENTIONED. THE PLATTER IS 16"X12 1/2"X2" THIS IS AN INTERESTING LITTLE PIECE OF CONFEDERATE GENEOLOGY/HISTORY. MARTHA MCCARTY Martha(Mattie) A. McCarty(200) was born November 27. 1828 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. She died December 28, 1898 and is buried in Corinth Cemetery near Timson, Texas. Dates from tombstone) From Barbour County, Alabama, marriages filed in Montgomery, Alabama, we find this record: Martha McCarty married John M. Lightner May 16, 1844. If this date is correct, she married when she was 16 years old. There is no family Bible record of Martha's birth or marriage, but her oldest child, Penelope, Nellie or Nep) was born January 9, 1859, fifteen years after Martha's marriage. There is no proof that a John M. Lightner born

The central area of the plate is quite a bit deeper than the surrounding edge. Measurements: 15-3/4" x 10-3/8" Weight is 4 pounds. When I first saw this lovely platter. I thought for sure it was an antique Staffordshire transferware piece from the Aesthetic period. It is very heavy. I could not read the mark on the back but finally I did figure ... moreit out. It read"Leonard Vienna" There is also an impressed"TK 25 2" in one area and"40" with a clover in another area. After much research. I discovered that this mark represented P.H. Leonard, a New York City importer of Bohemian porcelain beginning in 1880 after dissolving his partnership with Klingenberg& Leonard. His son, Harry, also joined the business. He bought whiteware from Bawo& Dotter and Count Thun of the Czech Republic, and other Bohemian factories. In 1898, he went bankrupt. The company reorganized and continued with the importing of porcelain but only from Limoges, France. From 1908. Anna Leonard continued the business and it is during her'reign' that this platter was imported. The mark dates it to about 1917. It is most likely of Limoges origin. Anna was a china decorator and she held many positions in the field. She was the vice-president of the Columbian Ceramic Society, president of the New York Society of Keramic Arts and she belonged to the National League of Mineral Painters. She had decorating clubs in various cities in the U.S. and a studio in Martha's Vineyard. Excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or
