Wow ~ old cabbage/butter crock. This is 10.5 lbs on my bathroom scale& 8.5" ID&9" OD there is a piece missing from the lid but still in great shape. The lid said 2 gallon. Hello. Thanks for viewing this antique salt-glaze yellow-ware stoneware crock(having one handle) with cobalt flow-blue trims. It's unmarked and I believe very old; from the mid to late 1800's(purchased from a local dealer) It has a rough(concave) bisque bottom and some glaze infractions, but is without chips or hairlines. Weight is slightly over 2 pounds, and the crock measures 6-1/4" height with a base diameter of 4-9/16" by 4-1/2" and the ovoid top is 5-1/2" diameter by 4-3/4" diameter. Antique stoneware crock A.O. Whittemore Havana N.Y. HOUSE
Antique 3 gallon stoneware crock by A.O. Whitemore of Havana. NY. There are certain potters known for their distinct design and collectors know one of these is a"Havana House" The blue cobalt design is dark and vivid. Their is a mark on the front in the glaze and also shrinkage cracks on the bottom which occur in the firing process. There are no cracks that go through the stoneware. The piece was checked by blacklight. There are three old chips in the top, which are actually rather smooth so they must be very old or occured duing the firing also. That I do not know for sure. The crock measures 12.5" wide and 7 inches tall. I was unable to find much information about the pottery but the following came from an article online at"Crudely sketched houses are sometimes seen. Sweet little NIPPON CROCK with Moriage decoration -
Offered today, This darling little Nippon crock It has gold trim on the lid and handles and the flowers have raised outlines. The inside is the same color- that blue tone in the photo is just shadow. There appears to be some white crusty substance by the handles which I thought was glue at first but it seems it may be under the glaze. Some of these spots look perfectly fine on the reverse side. The edge of the lid feels a bit rough but I don't know if it is normal or not. Vintage Stoneware Three Pound Salt Glaze Butter Crock
For your cosideration is a salt glazed butter crock of the three pound size. This crock does not have a manufacturer's mark on it. In 1894 a few of the stoneware manufacturer's started using white glaze instead of salt glaze; by 1902 salt glaze was a thing of the past. Salt glaze was made by shoveling salt into a kiln of unglazed stoneware when the temperature is well above 2000 degrees Farenhiet and the salt vapors adhere to the unglazed stoneware. Albany slip glaze was used on the inside of the container. Because with the container upside down on another container, salt vapors could not reach the inside of the container. Vintage, hand thrown earthenware French-style butter crock with hand painted details in dark green.The idea behind storing butter at room temperature in this type of container has been around since the Middle Ages and relies on water evaporation as the cooling method. ANTIQUE VINTAGE ICE WATER CROCK Tobacco slip and metal spout
This is a really large stoneware water crock. The spout is in good condition as is the glaze. There is no lid. The signature on the bottom is a crown with"2" inside and the letters R A P Co. I presume it means Roseville Art Pottery Company. It is 20th century. But I don't know what year. There are no cracks. The line on the bottom is from the mold. It does not leak.The glaze is shiny and beautiful. This appears to be stoneware and it is in really good condition. I see blue and gray ones all the time. Perhaps brown slip is more unusual. Take a look at this old blue and white slat box- actually came from a relative's kitchen and was really used. You can easliy see that it is not perfect and there is no lid. The major problem is that the back loop for hanging has been broken off for years; there is a 1 1/2cm blimish on the upper rim- otherwise. In good condition. This one's label is not as good condition as the other one I'll be listing. It dates from the late 1800s or very early 1900s. It is made of thick stoneware. Salt glazed and from England. I've never seen one with its original label! There are no chips. Cracks or repairs. Only natural imperfections when made. On the bottom it says NOT GENUINE UNLESS BEARING WM P. Bottom Marked Red Wing Stoneware Salt Glaze Crock with Hand Drawn Target
For your consideration is a bottom marked two gallon Red Wing Stoneware salt glaze crock made in Red Wing. Minnesota. This decoration was hand drawn on stoneware pieces during the 1890s. Red Wing Stoneware ceased using salt glaze in 1895-1896, which means this crock was manufactured during the early or middle 1890s. This crock is almost 10" tall and the bottom is slightly over 9" in diameter. This crock has an X shaped very tight hairline, this hairline is on the left side and the center of the X is approximately 3 1/2" above the bottom; these hairlines are very tight and the longest of the two lines is approximately 4 1/2" long and I can see neither hairline can be seen on the inside. Around the bottom are some chips; these chips are all pictured in at least one picture. The clay, this crock was made from did not have ... moreall the air pockets worked from it and as a rule these pockets of air expanded during firing making the exterior of this crock have bumps and lumps. Tonight's Auction is for a Redware Ovoid Type Crock with a handle and about 5 3\4 inches high. About 6 1\4 inches wide top to the outside and about 4 1\4 inches wide on the base. Crock originates in Pennsylvania area, made in the late 1800's mostly to hold apple butter and had inside glazes.It tapers in on the outside from the lip about an inch down and has a groove there all around horizontally. It's in very good condition totally with only two tiny nicks on the outside top lip,and several wear spots inside near base which is typical for redware insides,just so you know, no surprises. For sale is a Antique North Carolina Stoneware Crock Or Jar circa 1890. The jar is 7.5" tall and 5" in diameter. The stoneware is about 1/2" thick and the crock with lid weighs about 3 pounds. It would have been referred to as a quart canning jar probably for meats. The jar is in very good antique condition with no chips or cracks. There are superficial surface cracks on the base but the jar"Will Hold Water" The glaze is an albany slip that has been salt fired. The salt turns the albany slip back. A fantastic. Salt glazed stoneware small lidded, handled jar. Stamped"Patented Feb. 11. 1896. Jar and lid have some light all over crazing, as would be expected. Both have a few manufacturing flaws, but no chips, cracks, or repairs. Original wire and wood handle. Measures 5 1/2" high x 4 3/4 in diameter. Wire handle extended makes it about 7 1/2" high. Antique Stoneware: EX Norton Crock or Table Churn w/ Charming Cobalt Parrot, NR
This Norton Parrot is one of my personal favorites. This is an early piece from the Worcester. MA manufactory and dates between 1858-1877(see Ketchum, p.52) Call it a Crock, Jar or Table Churn, this Keeper belongs in any Antique Stoneware Collection. Note that there is a light crazing, or spider lines, on the glaze surface, two stone pops(lower right) and two shallow chips on the inner rim; otherwise excellent. 2Gal. capacity; measures 9"W x 11-1/2"H overall. VINTAGE POTTERY CROCK WITH BAND AND BALE: Unusual crock with metal band and bale by Hall. The name Hall is imprinted into the ceramic bottom but it was hard to capture in a photo. Age is unknown but it seems to be old. On the bottom is printed Hall- Made in U.S.A. 301. The crock stands 5.5" tall and 5" across. It is a heavy duty sturdy piece weighing 2.6 pounds.
