Up for bid is an Antique. Albany, Brown Slip Glaze, Wide Mouth, Bee hive, Crock Jug. The crock is 8-3/4 inches tall and the base is 5- 7/8 inches in diameter. The crock does have a good sized chip, and a smaller one, on the top outside edge, near the handle which someone painted brown(picture 3) Couple more chips on the opposite side(picture 5) There is also an imperfection that was done when the crock was made(picture 4) in the middle of the handle. It is a rough spot and the glaze is a little weird. Also, to the right of the handle in(picture 4) there is a chip in the body of the jug. There are also two other rough spots in the glaze at the base of jug on one side(picture 2) Picture#2 only shows one of the spots. Even with all the imperfections it is still makes for a nice display piece. Antique Albany Slip Stoneware Pottery Jar Crock Wax Sealer Earthenware 1880
For sale is a Antique Albany Slip Stoneware Pottery Jar or Crock. This is an old Wax Sealer sometimes referred to as Earthenware. The jar is 4.75" tall and 4.75" in diameter. The jar is in good antique condition with some edge chipping and a ghost hairline on the base that does not show on the inside. The jar will still hold water. I rarely find these pieces in this size. I have tested it for lead so I would date it to about 1880 to 1900. Glass jars were still quite expensive so stoneware jars were still in use during the late 19th century especially in the South. The interior is Albany slip and it has a wire bail for lifting and/ or carrying. On the exterior is a shoulder that is approximately 1 3/4" wide. Below the shoulder, on each side is a debossed design. It appears to possibly be tree leaves. On the bottomare eight vents. Albany Slip Stoneware Americana Brown Crock Jar, New York, 19th Century
I am so pleased to offer this wonderful antique stoneware jar or crock. Finished in a dark brown Albany Slip glaze. This crock is in great condition, no cracks, chips or damage. The measurements are 8.25 inches tall, 7 inches in the diameter and circumference around the middle is 23.25. There are some variations in the glaze that occurred during the firing process. There is also one spot of roughness in the glaze resulting from handling by the potter during the firing. This crock has a classic shape and a terrific eye catching look. Purchased from an old New York estate. Pottery makers across upstate New York turned out millions of pieces of utilitarian stoneware in the 19th century. Much of the stoneware was finished in a dark brown glaze called Albany Slip. The glaze was high in mineral content that accounts for the variations in brown ... moreshading. While salt glazing was the typical glaze technique seen on most American Stoneware pieces, other glaze methods were employed by potters. For instance, crocks or stoneware jars were often dipped in a glazed called the Albany Slip, a mixture that was made from a clay peculiar to the Upper Hudson Region of New York, and fired, producing a dark brown glaze. If you are a crock collector you will love this piece. This crock is heavy.

J. FISHER LYONS NY ANTIQUE BROWN GLAZED CROCK WITH SHOULDER STAMP HAND MADE. This antique stoneware crock is 6.5 pounds and has an amazing mirror like brown glaze. This is an impressive looking crock with two handles and what looks to be an inner lip where a lid once was placed. On the bottom of the glaze near the base there are the finger marks of the workers finger tips imprinted into the surface. They are the spots where the worker held the crock as it was dipped in glaze and remain frozen into it to this day and beyond. These markings appear to be spots where the glaze has rubbed off but is actually a tell tale marker of authentic an Albany slip glazed crock. The inside of the crock is almost black with swirling lines from when it was made by hand long ago spiraling out from the center of the inside bottom of the antique stoneware jug. ... moreThe stamp on the shoulder reads clearly'J. FISHER LYONS NEW YORK' There is a small chip on the bottom edge of one of the handles. A few surface chips on the top rim as well that are all minor. They could be left alone or repaired easily and cheaply. The bottom has some staining from rust and age. This can be removed with oxygen bleach and other household products. The bottom is the side nobody really sees anyways. Either way this antique brown glazed turn of the century crock is sure to catch the eye of all who behold it's subdued yet intriguing mirror like glow and it's hand crafted curvature.
