Early Trade.Ceramic, Japanese Attempt At Ante Bellum Woman.Figurine.
This is an interesting piece for historical reasons. As well as a very interesting, well crafted piece. It clearly signifies the opening to trade with the west. Please notice the difficulty the artist had creating an ante-bellum look. The tendency to create a traditional Geisha. Overwhelmed the effort to make an American southern lady. This is definitely an older piece. I will research the mark. And add it tomorrow. If anyone out there knows, please share the information. It would be appreciated. I am selling an unusual English Victorian gin crock. Which is barrel shaped and painted forest green with golden yellow stripes. There is a handsome crest at the center and an open spout at the bottom. The word"GIN" is painted within an arch above the crest. The pouring hole is plugged by a wooden bung or plug. This is an impressive piece of mid 19th century earthenware or crockery that has stood the test of time and remains a decorative, unique piece for the home or bar. Venetian Wet Drug Jar tin-glazed stoneware majolica circa 1560-70 Italian
This item is a Venetian Wet Drug jar. A very large one in ovoid form and maybe unique with the seamonster handles. The bad news is the loss of the glaze on the most decorative part of it, which would be the bare-breasted mermaids or female figures that form side A. I have come to believe that this happened due to actual use of this as a working jar. It is 16 inches high and weighs 12 pounds empty and I believe what they did when pouring was to stand it up and roll it on itself to pour into the receiving vessel, and mostly faced the mermaids against the wall so they would be seen by the customer. This would have loosened up the glaze over time and then the owners before me wiped it as if it were glass thereby causing the loss and explaining why that area does not look too aged as opposed to the other more common areas of loss such as the foot ... moreor the lip where the exposed areas have aged nicely. This is why when you buy contemporary tin-glazed stoneware it says not to be used for eating. The good news is that this is a very large and unusual example, because it does have the bare-breasted women, and dolphins and opposing lions and dolphins and a cherub in a medallion. I assume it has royal symbolism, which could be another reason it faced the wall after a change of government. In any case it is a nice decoration to have on one of these. The B side is a stylized floral design, which is also nice. For those of you less familiar with early maiolica, they were not as concerned as modern folks with both sides being the same or having the same pattern. What is really great about this one is the seamonster handles. I am not a absolute pottery expert but I know more than most and I can't remember seeing this on any other jar. In fact the form and size makes it rare. Antique? Alabama Brown Glaze Stoneware Crock Jug Pottery Antique? brown jug with handle. Crock pottery whiskey Measures 8 inches tall. 6-1/2 inches wide; 20" around. There are several"imperfections" in the glaze and surface of the jug. There are some"scratches" which might be a signature which you can see in the 2nd picture, near the bottom, about the middle. The cork is inside the jug; it is falling apart. The cork fell inside the jug when I tried to remove it to see what might be inside. There is chip out of the bottom edge- see picture 11. Next to last picture. Weight is 4 pounds and 1 ounce. Background on this jug- This jug belonged to my stepfather who passed away several years ago. He was born in 1914. He was making and selling moonshine at the age of 10- for a nickel a bottle(if I remember correctly what he ... moretold me) He was plowing a 40-acre field at the age of 11- with a team of mules. I don't know when or where he acquired this jug. It sat on his front porch for years. You can look at the pictures and make your own judgment about the age. He lived in the Sand Mountain area for a while in his youth so he could have gotten it there.

But believe it to be from the early 1900's. The crock is ribbed. It is brown with a cream color splashed over it on the inside and out. It has a matte finish. There is no brand name indicated, but there is a#61 on the bottom as well as the painters marks. Based on the weight, it appears to be American made. There are no exposed areas for us to confirm the clay color, which might have helped narrow down the region and manufacturer. It stands approximately 7" high and has a 3.25" opening. Lovely antique blue and white wall mount salt cellar or crock with lid. 5 and 3/4 inches in diameter and 9 inches to the top of the wall mount. There is a chip on the wall mount and a chip in the lid that is mostly on the under side as shown in pictures. Item is unmarked as most are but is very old. Colors are still vibrant with a glossy glaze. The word"salt" is embossed on the front with sun flower and basket motif. There are two creases on the lid know that occurred during manufacturing. This is a very nice vintage stoneware Copenhagen snuff jar by Weyman& Bros. of Pittsburgh. PA. There is minor crazing and no chips or cracks. There is a tiny flaw at the bottom near the"A" in PA but it looks to be as if it were there when it was first inscripted. The actual inscription reads"Copenhagen Snuff Weyman& Bro. Pittsburg PA. Note the old spelling of Pittsburg which really dates the piece. It measures about 6.5 in. tall.

Antique Porcelain Crock Container Hall brand #4 Made in USA Heavy
Here is an antique solid#4 porcelain crock made by the Hall company in the USA. The crock shows typical wear from age and was use as a planter for awhile. It has been cleaned with soap and water. There is one chip(superficial) at the bottom of the middle lip(see pic) There are no cracks or holes. There are some marks and tiny nicks around the top edge. This crock is 8 and 1/2 inches tall and 9 and 1/2 inches across the top and it weighs almost 10 pounds unpackaged. It is marked on the bottom. This is a very stronger heavy crock. The stoneware jug has its’ original cork with the original cork wire puller to avoid users having to actually touch mercury residue on the cork.
