ANTIQUE ROYCROFT ART POTTERY LITTLE BROWN JUG ARTS CRAFTS OVOID STONEWARE CROCK!
I am selling my highly collectible ANTIQUE early's ROYCROFT SHOPS ARTS& CRAFTS ART POTTERY" LITTLE BROWN JUG" As I need to downsize some of my pottery collections. This darling"Little Brown Jug" stands 5" tall X 4" at the widest point of the jug body. The spout sits 7/8" above the body and the handle is large enough to put a fat finger through. The handle sits 1 1/4" out to the side. This little jug is heavy art pottery stoneware in the traditional Arts& Crafts manner with the typical satin matte glaze. The glaze is a rich coffee brown and there are several decorative"rings" under the glaze at the widest point in the body(see photos) This was made by the Roycroft Shops out of Aurora NY in the early 1900's. The jug is marked on the unglazed underside with the Roycroft" ... moreR" in a circle below the stylized cross. The impression of the stamp is not deep. But legible. The jug is in very good antique condition, it is almost 100 years old! There are no cracks, chips or repairs however the rich brown glaze does have a few little"glaze pops" here and there in the glaze only, not the clay. There are three small glaze pops that are the size of a large pin head and another a bit larger, about 1/8" in diameter. Most of these are in one area so the jug will display nicely. They are old glaze pops that are often found on art pottery, as this is the nature of the glaze. This is not considered damage as these"pops" usually occurred during firing and manufacture. The glazes are never smooth and there are usually little lumps and bumps under the glaze. These pops are tiny and well documented in my pictures. Roycroft shops art pottery is highly collectible and this is a nice size. This would look perfect with your other primitives. Mission setting or for display with dried straw flowers. I have a lot of Mission furniture and this is a nice accent piece. This is a thick, heavy little jug, thus the shipping cost. This is a great price as

ANTIQUE OVOID STONEWARE JAR, OPEN HANDLED, COGGLE MARKS, HAND PAINTED
ANTIQUE OVOID STONEWARE JAR. OPEN HANDLED, COGGLE MARKS, HAND PAINTED I am not a stoneware expert so I am just going to tell you what I see. I have had this piece in my personal collection for years and have not been able to identify it. Any experts out there are welcome and encouraged to comment on this piece. This is an interesting ovoid stoneware jar. It has no lid. It holds almost 1 gallon. It has a very nice coggle design under the hand painted design. I think this crock may be from the North East as the design is of a river running into the sea with the waves crashing on to the high cliffs. If it were from the south east you would think it would be less green and lower beach area. But this is only a guess. There are a few condition concerns, two hair lines emanating from the upper rim and some minor paint loss. There are a few glaze ... morepops near the lower rim. Please see pictures CONDITION: GOOD SOME DAMAGE see pictures SIZE: 7.5” X 8” SHIPPING WEIGHT INCLUDING PACKING MATERIALS: 5.5LBS. Condition issues include five surface chips. The largest of which is on the front, just left of center near the top and measures approximately 1-1/2" by 1-3/8" Other surface chips appear on the front bottom(about 1-1/4" in width and 3/4" in width) and on the back about mid-way down(1" and 1/2" There are also five smaller chips to the very bottom edge of the piece, the largest of which measures approximately 1-1/8" in width. It is difficult to see because of the dark color of the jug, but ... morehere is a tight hairline which begins at the top and extends downward about 3-1/4" There are also some small holes. most notably two toward the bottom left of center on the side. There are also a couple areas of heavy wear to the glaze, and the typical tiny glaze skips and other minor imperfections. The bottom of the jug is covered in green felt(therefore we cannot speak to any hairlines which may be on the bottom) and there is a cork in the top with the top broken off- we acquired it this way and have not tried to get it out. There is even something inside the crock- it sounds like a marble but we will never know! We do not know the maker or region of origin, but it seems like a New York piece to us. While it could be restored, the appeal of this piece is largely the sheer size, shape, and the blue decoration, which is in a very nice state of repair. The surface chips are noticeable, and other issues mentioned only for accuracy; this piece still displays very well and has lots of character! Please view the images for condition details. As they are part of the description and they are of the actual item you will receive. Shipping is FREE to the continental U.S. only(lower 4

Description- This Jar is about 10 inches tall and about 7.5 inches at its widest point. It weighs close to 5 pounds. It has a chip out of the outer rim. And another imperfection also on the outer rim that looks like it happened during the firing process. History- In the"Norwich Directory" of 1857 is the advertisement of"Sidney Risley. No. 4 Cove St. Manufacturer of Stone Ware in Every Variety. The Trade supplied with all kinds of Stone Ware, at the lowest market prices. Risley at first leased the property. But in 1856 purchased it and continued the business until his death on April 26, 1875, at the age of sixty-one years. His son. George L. Risley, then continued the works until his tragic death on the ... moreday before Christmas, 1881. He had gone to the pottery to light the fires under an upright boiler, which blew up, and, going through the roof of the building, landed in the cove about 120 feet away. It is said that the force of the explosion was so great that the 1500-pound boiler passed completely over a fifty-foot elm tree at the rear of the pottery. Mr. Risley was so badly injured that he died that evening. An account of the accident appeared in the"Scientific American"
