Salt Glazed Canning or Storage Stoneware Crock, Waxed Seal Design, Circa 1900’s
I am so pleased to offer this wonderful antique salt glazed canning or storage crock. The vintage crocks of long ago were used mainly as storage for foods that had to be kept for a lengthy period of time without refrigeration. The knowledge of refrigeration and preservatives were not known when most of these crocks were used. This crock is designed to be sealed with wax to make it air tight for storage. This crock is in great condition with no cracks or repairs. There is one small chip about 3/4 inch in diameter at the outside edge of the top rim. The measurements of this jug are 9.25 inches tall. 7 inches in diameter across the base, and circumference around the middle is 22.75 inches. The glaze is in perfect condition with no firing imperfections. I see no variation in the light gray color of the glaze of this crock. There is one color ... moreaddition to describe; this crock has a tobacco spit spot decoration on the shoulder rim at the top of this jug. Tobacco spit glaze marks are not considered an imperfection. Frequently, the potters would apply these tobacco spits as decorations. This jugs texture has a slight sandy texture. The glaze was formed by throwing common salt into the kiln during the higher temperature part of the firing process. Sodium from the salt reacts with silica in the clay body to form a glassy coating of sodium silicate. This jug is heavy

Antique Jug/Crock by Ballard Brothers Circa 1870, 2 Gallon
You are bidding on an antique jug/crock by O.L. + A.K. Ballard of Burlington. Vermont made about 1870. It is a two gallon jug standing 15" high and weighs 10 Lbs. As shown in my pictures, there is a chip in the outside of the base and a small crack where the lower part of the handle joins the body. This crack is small and does not go around the handle join. The spout is in very good condition with no chips or cracks, but the side of the body does show some discoloration which might be removed. This is a gem among crocks and a must for collectors. TWO GALLON MIDWESTERN SALT GLAZE STONEWARE CROCK Circa 1880s
This is a very nice two gallon Midwestern salt glaze stoneware crock. I've had this piece on my collection for many years but it's time to thin out or join the hoarders club! At 9 1/2" tall and 9" across this would be a perfect piece for kitchen utensils. It would make a beautiful Christmas display filled with lights and Shiny Brite Christmas Bulbs from my other listings! This piece was hand turned. You can tell by the feel of the brown albany glaze inside. The lines go round and round and round; you can see the imprints of the potters fingers while the clay turned on the wheel. The tiny black specks in the tan clay give me the impression that this could have been made in the Ohio area. The salt glaze of the 19th century(like this one) began to be phased out in 1990 making way for the newer white bristol glaze so this piece ... morehad to have been turned before that time, ie around the 1980's or shortly before. This crock is beautifully preserved. And in excellent condition for its age. There is a very faint hairline on one side that I didn't notice for years until magnifying to post for this listing. I will double box for safe shipping. Please leave positive feedback when delivered so I know it arrived safely. Thanks for looking!
Red Wing Salt Glaze Crock Pot Blue Midwestern Molasses Dispenser Circa 1880
3 Gallon Salt Glaze Crock Midwestern Molasses Dispenser Circa 1880's This was a very functional piece of stoneware in its time with the spigot. You do not see these often with the spigot. VERY RARE Its believed the crock was placed in a wire bin and used as a dispenser. Very cool! This is believed to be Red Wing crock. Cannot confirm one hundred percent. It does have a crack starting at the top of the open end of the crock. A small chip is also missing where the crack originated from. Unfortunately 1 time in 130 years the crock was set down wrong and caused the crack. There is another very small chip which is shown in the pictures. Other than the couple of spots this is in great condition. It is clean overall with the darker color on the inside. Crock will be packed with extra care. Its heavy and the reason for the slightly higher cost ... moreof shipping. Only the item above which was just described is up for purchase. My house.
