Hello& Welcome, Here's a fantastic old stoneware crock that's still in great condition. It holds one gallon filled to its brim and measures approximately 9 3/4" high. 6 1/4" wide at the bottom& 5 1/2" wide at the top. The opening is 4" wide and it has a tapered neck. The glazing on this crock is in beautiful condition, inside and out. The crock has no markings on it but I suspect it was made locally as S.E. Ohio was/is well known for its good clay soils for producing pottery, ceramics& glass. Within one half hour of where I live is where the homes of such companies as Roseville Pottery, Hull Pottery, Hall Pottery, Anchor-Hocking Glass, Hocking Glass, Fenton, McCoy Pottery, etc. were located. This old crock, though it is missing its lid(like many) is in very, very good condition with no cracks, nicks, ... moreetc. and would make a great addition to any collection. WHAT A CROCK OF. Gooseberry Preserves. Lemon Curd, or perhaps Clotted Cream, Dear Collectors, this is a genuine 19th c antique English lustre glazed Preserve Stoneware Crock Jar peculiar to those made across the big pond for food preservation of yesteryear in the British Isles. Every respectable farmstead would sport several in the kitchen and buttery/pantry for daily use and storage of preserved foodstuffs well before the days of modern refrigeration made these charming sturdy stoneware vessels outmoded and relegated to collector status. Quite similar to American Albany slip brown glaze. The exterior of crock is covered lavishly in pearl brown lustre wash glaze giving it a soft lustre reflective pearl shine with life that dances off the surface at all angles. It features twin lug handles at upper side to aid gripping crock during cooking ... morewith a decorative stamped incised single beaded ring running around the upper middle kissing lower handle extensions. It has a most gentle chamfered base bevel, then the bottom is simply unglazed stoneware clay patina. A thick well formed rim likely once had a lid no longer present, but no matter, clean sage gray green glazed interior is happy to hold your wooden spoons and kitchen utensils in period style. Overall it has a tall, slight flared upright shape like a fine pail with great dignity and usefulness to industrious housekeeper.remember Mrs. Bridges from Upstairs, Downstairs? Hudson would approve and no doubt Downton Abbey has a few on display as well. It stands 6.25" tall and 5.75" across open top. I would guestimate, holds about a quart liquid capacity overall. It is in sound fine condition with no damage, no chips, no hairlines. nothing beyond the the usual firing scratch in the making or tiny rough clay blob on rim glazed over. Up for bid is an old Salt Glazed. Stoneware, Canning Jar, Crock. PATENTED FEB.11. 1896 The crock measures 5- 3/8" inches tall and the base is 4-7/8" inches in diameter. Due to age and use there are some imperfections. There is a good sized chip on the outside, top, edge(picture 5) chip with a hairline crack top edge(pictures 6) and a small chip on the inside edge(picture 7) There are also a hairline crack in the body of the crock(picture 3) and a small chip where the handle inserts(picture 4) The crock also has some crazing. SMALL BROWN GLAZED CROCK JAR POTTERY STONEWARE 1860 VIRGINIA WEST INCISED RING
Here is a MOST INTERESTING OLD CROCK from WEST VIRGINIA OR VIRGINIA I THINK. I know that it is old. Probably pre CIVIL WAR around 1860- It has a an INCISED RING down to about the middle that sets it apart from most others of its type. It is small, even diminutive, measuring just 6 1/4 inches in height, 4 inches across the top and 4 1/4 inches across the base. The bare clay on the base indicates that it is REDWARE. Now the GOOD NEWS- It is in MINT- PERFECT CONDITION. I cannot find one thing wrong with it. For the age that is REMARKABLE. You will notice that one of the photos make the pot look like blue. That is where the sun was hitting it, a reflection. The interior shows the EXACT SAME BROWN GLAZE AS THE OUTSIDE DOES. GREAT LITTLE JAR. Buyer pays $8.00 domestic shipping and handling. Here we have a Vintage 10" Tall Lidded Glazed Stoneware Preserves Fruit Jar. The color in photos is accurate. Someone painted some yellow flowers on it but it could be removed in wanted. The lid fits securely with a little rocking but ok. There is wear here and there and a small chip on the bottom edge. As shown. Measures 7-1/2" in diameter(handle to handle) It's fairly clean inside. Antique Vintage Glazed 1/2 gallon Stoneware Crock Canning Fruit Jar wax seal Up for bid is a very nice antique 1880's era crock made out of stoneware for canning fruit. Preserves, and such prior to the introduction of glass mason jars. There is no marking of the maker or the exact year it was produced. Wax is used to seal these jars. This particular crock was not made with a bale and lid. It measures approximately 5" wide at base and 9" tall. The opening measures 3" wide. This wonderful piece is in normal condition for age with a small chip on bottom edge and has few minor scratches. Scuffs, and surface cracks. The inner glaze remains intact with no concerns. This would be great to use yet if desired or you can start a collection or add it to your current collection. There are 2 chips in the outer rim. One measures about 3/4" and the other about 1 1/4" This empty crock from bygone times stands about 7" tall. About 4 3/4" in diameter, and weighs just under 3 pounds. The crock was purchased from an estate sale. Was dusted off a little, and comes as shown in the pictures.
