We can't recall seeing this very charming mark before, and can't seem to find any record of stoneware being sold with this mark, so we're guessing it's at least very scarce if not quite rare. Probably dates to the late 1800's, we're also guessing. We're also not sure, but believe this is either from Mansfield, Ohio or Mansfield, Massachusetts. We invite emails with further information that we can add to this listing. Nicely decorated with a cobalt feather like design below the cobalt washed merchant stamp. And a stamped"2" for a 2 gallon crock above it. Measures about 8 and 3/4 inches tall and 9 and ... more1/2 inches across. There is a crack that begins at the top edge left of the decoration and ends on the base as can be seen in the photos. Otherwise, it appears to be in surprisingly good shape. The only other flaws are in the making glaze pops as can be seen in the photos, one just above the g in general(with a bit of cobalt glaze over it) and then there's one on the interior and two on the back side(each about 1/4 inch across) and some minor imperfections, scratches and wear as to be expected with a utilitarian stoneware piece. A wonderful piece of 153 year old decorated stoneware chock full of crudity and character! Note the crudely formed elephant ear handles that were formed and applied by hand. A thick even coat of salt glaze was expertly applied during firing. Lending the piece a shiny light brown aged patina. This wonderful antique crock comes to you in the highly collectible three gallon size. A size with great appeal to collectors as it will display just about anywhere. The interior is lined with a typical chocolate brown Albany Slip. Condition: Excellent for a crock over 150 years old. Up for auction is an Antique Stoneware Salt Glaze Decorated Cobalt Blue Stylized Swirly 3 Gallon Crock. Circa: 1880's. The large blue Stylized Swirly 3 decoration is lovely. The decoration is 3" long X 2" wide. This 3 Gallon crock is tan with dark specks in the glaze. Measurements: 10 3/4" tall. 10 1/2" in diameter at the top rim. About 10 1/2" in diameter at the base. 3 Gallon crock. Condition: No chips or hairlines. Nice ring when tapped! Clean inside but there are flakes in the glaze and what feels like sand on parts of the glaze inside. See last 4 pictures. The last two pictures were taken with a flash. The outside has spots of red paint on the side with the extra manufacturing drips of glaze on the handle, shown in picture 7& 8. Applied handles are in very good condition. Stoneware Butter Crock Cobalt Blue Decorated Maybe Remmy or Baltimore
This butter or cake crock stands 4 1/2 x 8 1/2" wide. It has a great cobalt design and is a great smaller size. Also has some great decoration around the larger lug handles. My guess is it was made in Philadelphia by Remmey around 1880. The one flaw is the 3 1/2" crack and does have some minor chips which have been colored by the previous owner. Hard to get these butter crocks and this one would display just fine. Buyer to pay $15 shipping.

Antique Samuel Pewtress New Haven Cobalt Crock This listing is for this antique stoneware crock. It is circa the late 1860's to the 1870's. It is signed Samuel L. Pewtress New Haven with a number 2. The 2 is for 2 gallon. It is decorated with a cobalt design as shown of a spinning cyclone or top. The height is 9 1/2 inches. The widest diameter is about 10 1/2 inches including the handles. This is in very good condition with a couple of tiny use flaws. There are no cracks. The inside of the rim has one small chip as shown. There are 2 other inside rim very small nicks that are very minor. The outside of the rim has 2 very small nicks. These are very minor as well. The base has no chips. Someone wrote on the base. There are a couple of age darkenig spots. Please note that there are reflections in some of the photos that may look like ... morechips or nicks but are not. There are none other than the ones described. There are the usual small glaze misses and color changes common to pottery of this age. For its age the mentioned flaws are very minor. Awesome Looking Salt Glazed Stoneware Crock with Handles: Cobalt Blue Decorated
PLEASE NOTE: I am not an expert on this kind of item. I Found it in my Grandfather's Collection. It was stored in his attic for years. It could be an Old Pennsylvania Dutch Crock. Or something else. I Know it is Dark Grey in color with an Awesome Cobalt Blue Design. It has handles, and I t appears to me that it was hand-spun on a wheel(Due to"ring marks seen inside) On the outside. It has an"I" with dots around it. I think it stands for the Roman Numeral: One. It has some marking inside that looks almost like a"chicken foot" or"upside-down peace sign" Not sure what it is. Please view all 12 of the pictures for more details on its condition. It does have a crack-line that runs down the side of it(can also see it on the inside) But it doesn't seem to hurt its appearance much in my opinion. The Crock ... morefelt sturdy as I moved it in different positions for photographing. This crock looks like it has been kept in very great condition overall, except for some"wear" I believe it is"antique" and because of that it isn't 100% Perfect. Handles are a little"wavy" on the edges of them. But they look like it might have been how they made it, not 100% sure though. I rubbed it with my finger and it felt smooth to me.
