Antique Vintage Weir Stoneware Brown Canning Crock with Wire closure
This is a Weir Canning Crock with a Patent March 1st 1892 as identified on the lid. It still has the original working wire closure but it is rusty. There are no noted chips or cracks. The inside is clean. With the vintage age there is some crazing on the cream colored area of the crock. I personally took this piece out of my grand mothers old farm house kitchen basement crawl space. It was sitting beside several old crocks and several large bolders(rocks) which were supporting the old house so I know they have been there for years. The house has been in the family for 100 years. Hello and Welcome! For bids. We offer this antique WEIR Monmouth No. 1 Storage Crock. Description: This is a very old and in great condition storage crock. The crock is made of stoneware and measures 5 1/2 inches(to top of bale) and is 3 1/2 inches in diameter. The crock bottom is the classic white/gray and brown glaze. The crock is marked with an impressed stamp at the top of the neck in a small circle"Weir. Monmouth, K" The crock is outfitted with an interesting wire bale, having a curved release handle. The cap/seal is fairly interesting also and is marked in raised letters"No. 1, PAT March 1st 92(1892) April 16th 1901" Overall the crock is in excellent condition, the metal bale is in great shape and only the cap seal has any wear/damage to it. Wonderful early 1800s WEIR#4 1 gallon antique stoneware crock features a patented iron bale and stoneware lid. This heavy stoneware"jar" was used for canned foods. Likely put away on some rural farm, and probably in the root cellar. Romantic notions aside, these jars, full of preserved goods, were essential for survival during the winter months for a 19th century farm family. Glazed in a putty color, this jar's finish crazed so long ago, that it looks like a Raku pottery piece, for a lovely effect. The wire bail is rusty, and there are factory flaws and a couple of"owwies" but nothing serious. The number 154 is impressed into the bottom. The lid reads(as best I can tell) THE WEIR, PAT'D APRIL 18TH 1881, and then more that I cannot make out at all. A great old piece! In remarkable shape for its age and usage; there ... moreare a number of very small chips on the lip of the jar. As well as several factory flaws and glaze misses. The only real damage is a spot that looks like an hard-boiled eggshell when it gets hit; it dents and the shell cracks, but doesn't break. See photos. No damage anywhere that I can see. This is an extremely rare lid to a miniature Weir jar crock. It is 2" in diameter on the top and the inner part of bottom that fits into jar is 1 1/4" in diameter. The area the bail sits on is 1" long and 3/4" wide. Has one maker defect glaze skip on top edge but is otherwise excellent. Marked Weir Patent'92. Likely for a horse radish jar.

Antique vinage Weir 1901 stoneware pottery fruit jar canning crock lid latch
A vintage stoneware fruit canning jar/crock with lid and metal latch. It measures just shy of 8" tall. There is a chip on the outer rim of the lid of about one half inch in width. And another of about 1/4" in width on the lid on the opposite side of the first chip. please see photos) There is also a small chip on the bottom edge of the jar measuring about 1/4" in width. There are some chips on the underside of the lid(not visible when the jar is assembled) The metal hinge is in good working order. The chips are small and mentioned only to be thorough; this jar displays very well. No hairlines or cracks. There are some minor imperfections such as crazing and skips in the glaze, some of which we are unclear on whether they are manufacturing flaws or occurred later. Antique Stoneware croc made by the Weir Pat. company in March 1st 1892. April 18th, 1889#4. The advertisement on the side is"Pride, Apple and Strawberry Jam. The add is almost all there and very easy to read. The wire for the handle is there but the latching part is missing. The croc is clean with a hairline crack by the lid but no chips. The croc measures height 6 1/2, mouth opening 3 1/4, 5 1/2. This croc has been in my Grandmothers house and very well taken care of. Very nice condition.

Offered is this antique glazed beige and dark brown stoneware crock with lid. The crock has a wire handle and metal piece that clamps down into a groove in the lid to hold the lid on. The lid is marked"The Weir Pat. Mar 1st 1892" The crock sits about 9" high including the lid and handle and is about 5 3/4" in diameter at the base. I have not measured its capacity but looks like it might be as much as 1/2 gallon. It is in good to very good condition. On the plus side. The wire handle, metal clamp and lid are intact and still function, the outside glazing is almost entirely intact and the inside is almost completely glazed. However. There is a chip and other wear on the top of the lid, a chip on the inside rim of the underside of the lid, a small chip and other marks on the border between the beige and dark brown glaze and ... morea thin crack at the base extending almost half-way around and a hairline crack across part of the bottom. In 1906 seven established Pottery Companies merged to form the WESTERN STONEWARE COMPANY: The Monmouth Pottery Company became Plant Number One The Weir Pottery Company became Plant Number Two Macomb Stoneware became Plant Number Three Macomb Pottery. Became Plant Number Four D. Culbertson Stoneware Company of White Hall Illinois became Plant Number Five Clinton Stoneware of Clinton Missouri. Became Plant Number Six Fort Dodge Stoneware of Fort Dodge Iowa became Plant Number Seven until a fire destroyed the facilities one year after the merger. The bottom ... moreof the jar base is incised: 70. 140. I believe the jar base was made at plant Number Seven. Originally the Fort Dodge Stoneware factory, which would mean the jar was actually made between 1906 and 1907. In raised letters. The lid has: WEIR SEAL N0 4 WESTERN STONEWARE CO. MONMOUTH ILLINOIS which would indicate it was made according to the Weir Company specifications and molds but since it has“NO 4” it was made after the merger in 1906 at the Macomb Pottery Factory. Plant Number Four. The jar itself is 7 1/2" tall. With the lid it stands 8 6/8” The jar base is 5 1/2" and the top narrows to 4” with an inside opening of 3 1/4" The jar and lid weigh about 3 3/4 pounds. This antique crock jar is in good display condition for being 100 years old. In addition to factory flaws and peck marks in the stoneware and glazing. The jar has a small 1/4" nick at the base. At the top opening there is a hairline crack that goes through to the inside and a few nicks along the inside rim. The lid has a small 1/4" hairline crack.
