Julius Norton and his brother-in-law ran the Norton family pottery from 1844-1847 when Fenton left the partnership. This was a very short-lived partnership! The ovoid form shows that this jug was made early in the partnership because Fenton is responsible for moving the Norton pottery to try straight-sided jugs. Measurements are 13" H x 9" in diameter. This auction is for a Antique stoneware crock w/ blue floral design E& LP Norton Bennington VT# 3. It is 12" tall. In good shape. One of the handles has a small chip on the underside(see photo# 8) The design is nice and dark. The name impression is very readable as well. There is a 2" x 2" spot to the lower left of the design that looks to be a glaze flaw of some sort of wear mark. It is rougher than the rest of the finish(photo 9) There is also a small flake on the inside top rim of the crock(photo 7) Good shape other than that handle. I also see a line on the top inside of the crock that is completely glazed over. AN E& L P NORTON BENNINGTON VT 2 TWO GALLON CROCK/JUG It is 14" high. 9" wide, and weighs 9 1/2 pounds. Across the top written very clearly is E& L P Norton Bennington. Vt. 2" The cobalt blue floral like design just under that is very clear and crisp. It appears that there is one chip on one side and a small imperfection a few inches below that. Please see pictures. Well here is an auction for the true Stoneware collector! If you appreciate the stoneware as well as the history and the people who made it, this is a must have for you! This is a collection of 206 pieces of Julius Norton& Norton& Fenton stoneware shards and kiln stackers and supports dug by myself in Bennington. Vt. Included are pieces with the Norton& Fenton stamps. Bennington& East Bennington, Vt stamps, blue Bennington flowers. And a few ocher flower pieces. As well as pieces of jug and crock handles, and a few molded pieces of fancy lids and Rockingham. There are approx. 25 pieces of kiln stackers and supports made by hand. Some with the finger marks. Of the thousands of pieces of stoneware that made it and we admire and appreciate today, just think of the thousands of pieces that did not make it! This auction is for a Antique E Norton& Co Bennington. Vermont 1 1/2 gallon stoneware crock it is in very nice shape- No cracks the handles are in good shape. It is 7.75" tall. The top is 8.75" in diameter. This needs to be cleaned. Some staining on the top rim. I feel a small indent on the bottom rim(I tried to get a closeup of it) Lettering is very readable. Thank you. Antique J & E Norton Bennington, Vermont 2 Gal. Crock Peacock?
We are pleased to offer without reserve this great old incised J& E Norton. Bennington, Vermont crock. There is a large incised 2 under the maker’s mark indicating that it is a two gallon piece. The cobalt image looks to us like the very desirable and hard to find“Peacock in a Tree” design made by the Nortons. It is very well done with a lot of detail on the bird and the tree branch. There are no chips or cracks on this crock. But there are a couple flakes. One is on the wing of the bird and a very small one is on the breast. The inside of the pot is glazed. The outside is very mottled. And not being experts in stoneware we don’t know why. It is. However, a very stunning piece and we think that you will be pleased with it. In very good condition with the pottery stamp with cobalt wash and a Large and Exuberant Floral Bouquet in Bold Bennington Cobalt Blue. Measures 12 3/8" X 12 3/4" Excellent Condition. Some hard water staining inside. And 2 small chips around the rim. There is a 2" hairline crack on the inside, as seen in the picture. On the right side there is a glaze of glossy. Translucent and slightly orange-peel-like texture, which was formed by throwing common salt into the kiln during the higher temperature part of the firing process. A great old 1 1/2 gallon storage jar with lid and cobalt feather decoration made in Bennington. VT by E. L. P. Norton between 1858 and 1881. It's 10 1/4" tall and 7 3/4" wide at the applied handles. There is a hairline at the left handle. There are also several small chips and dings, all seen in the photos. Still, a great piece by a great maker. Will ship at an 11-pound rate. Very Nice Antique Blue Decorated Stoneware Jar"J& E Norton" Bennington. VT Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration. Stamped"J. E. NORTON/ BENNINGTON, VT, circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a circular flower blossom extending from a curled leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An unusual design for Julius and Edward Norton stoneware. 8" fairly-tight spider crack from rim on front. Wide 7" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on revers. Minor nicks to interior of rim. Shallow 1" chip on side of rim. Faint Y-shaped line on underside, not visible on interior.
