Antique "The Weir" Canning Crock Great Shape
The Weir crock is a great example of American fortitude. Used for canning. Sturdy and hand made. Look at the pictures. You can see where the potter took his wire to cut the piece off the wheel, so interesting. Says 1881, I believe on the lid, kinda hard to make out. This is missing the iron small bale that closes this tight for canning, however, the lid does not fall off because it ingeniously has a good sized lip on the lid to prevent just that. Great for a collection.

Antique Vintage Weir Stoneware Brown Canning Crock with Wire closure
This is a Weir Canning Crock with a Patent March 1st 1892 as identified on the lid. It still has the original working wire closure but it is rusty. There are no noted chips or cracks. The inside is clean. With the vintage age there is some crazing on the cream colored area of the crock. I personally took this piece out of my grand mothers old farm house kitchen basement crawl space. It was sitting beside several old crocks and several large bolders(rocks) which were supporting the old house so I know they have been there for years. The house has been in the family for 100 years. Hello and Welcome! For bids. We offer this antique WEIR Monmouth No. 1 Storage Crock. Description: This is a very old and in great condition storage crock. The crock is made of stoneware and measures 5 1/2 inches(to top of bale) and is 3 1/2 inches in diameter. The crock bottom is the classic white/gray and brown glaze. The crock is marked with an impressed stamp at the top of the neck in a small circle"Weir. Monmouth, K" The crock is outfitted with an interesting wire bale, having a curved release handle. The cap/seal is fairly interesting also and is marked in raised letters"No. 1, PAT March 1st 92(1892) April 16th 1901" Overall the crock is in excellent condition, the metal bale is in great shape and only the cap seal has any wear/damage to it. This late 1800's canning crock was made by Sherwood Brothers of New Brighton Pa. Western Pa. was full of potteries turning out all types of stoneware at this time.Two brothers were involved in stoneware manufacturing there and it's name officially became Sherwood Bros.Pottery in 1898. Canning crocks were still used long after Mason jars were created in 1858 due to the fact that most people canning were not exposed to or could not afford new jars. It took time as all things do.This wax seal crock measures 8" Tall x4" Diameter.Has a Weir lid with the it's information"PAT MARCH1.1892-APRIL16,1901" Wire closure bale is missing, but this is still a lovely piece of history. Good condition no cracks. I've taken good care of it since the 70s.now it can be yours!

Antique vinage Weir 1901 stoneware pottery fruit jar canning crock lid latch
A vintage stoneware fruit canning jar/crock with lid and metal latch. It measures just shy of 8" tall. There is a chip on the outer rim of the lid of about one half inch in width. And another of about 1/4" in width on the lid on the opposite side of the first chip. please see photos) There is also a small chip on the bottom edge of the jar measuring about 1/4" in width. There are some chips on the underside of the lid(not visible when the jar is assembled) The metal hinge is in good working order. The chips are small and mentioned only to be thorough; this jar displays very well. No hairlines or cracks. There are some minor imperfections such as crazing and skips in the glaze, some of which we are unclear on whether they are manufacturing flaws or occurred later. This is a great little Weir No. 2 crock. The lettering on the lid is worn. But is readable. Two dates are on it March 1892 and April 16, 1901. There are no defects unless you call the manufacturing irregularities defects. 7-1/2" high without the lid. The lid adds about one inch.

The crock has a brown base with a cream colored lid. This coloring appears to be less common than the darker glazed brown and cream. The lid states that it was made by the Weir Company. The Weir Stoneware Company was based in Monmouth. Illinois. The lid states not only that this is a Weir Crock. But also has the following information: Pat'd Mar 1st 1880. Dimensions: About 8 1/4 inches high with the lid on. the crock is about 7 inches high without the lid. The Crock is about 3 14 inches across The Lid is about 1 1/4 inches high and about 2 1/2 inches wide(See photos with ruler) Condition: The crock itself is in good vintage shape. Beautiful blue wide-mouth Western Stoneware Co. Monmouth Illinois. canning jar/c. Rock with Weir lid. This is approximately 6" x 6" There is a chip out of the bottom of the crock(see photo) And a surface crack along the side(see photo) The lid and the sides have some bumps/lumps that I guess were in the original pottery. M. Anufacturer's defect of dripped blue glaze down the inside of the crock and underside of the lid. The clasp appears somewhat rusty. Lid says. Western Stoneware Co. Monmouth. Illinois .
