PRIMITIVE ANTIQUE~1881 WEIR #4 BALETOP SALT GLAZED STONEWARE CANNING JAR w/LID
Wonderful early 1800s WEIR#4 1 gallon antique stoneware crock features a patented iron bale and stoneware lid. This heavy stoneware"jar" was used for canned foods. Likely put away on some rural farm, and probably in the root cellar. Romantic notions aside, these jars, full of preserved goods, were essential for survival during the winter months for a 19th century farm family. Glazed in a putty color, this jar's finish crazed so long ago, that it looks like a Raku pottery piece, for a lovely effect. The wire bail is rusty, and there are factory flaws and a couple of"owwies" but nothing serious. The number 154 is impressed into the bottom. The lid reads(as best I can tell) THE WEIR, PAT'D APRIL 18TH 1881, and then more that I cannot make out at all. A great old piece! In remarkable shape for its age and usage; there ... moreare a number of very small chips on the lip of the jar. As well as several factory flaws and glaze misses. The only real damage is a spot that looks like an hard-boiled eggshell when it gets hit; it dents and the shell cracks, but doesn't break. See photos. No damage anywhere that I can see. Beautiful stoneware cake crock WITH lid. The cobalt is beautiful on this. 10 3/4" by 10 3/4" 6" tall This has had it's share of use and does have some issues. Chips. Some large, and a crack on one side going down onto the bottom of the crock and also running sideways off of it. See 4th pic. chips and thin tight cracks on lid. The lid was on this when I purchased this several years ago and I am assuming it is the original.it fits. Old metal wire band around crock apparently stabilizing it. The design on the bottom has the word”BUTTER” in relief and it is surrounded with a beaded design. Flanking the label are clusters of what look like beaded cherries or apricot designs. The ornamentation goes all the way around the bottom. The condition of this piece is pretty amazing. Especially given the age and that was a utilitarian object. The snap-in bale handle is missing and there is a tiny hairline on the inside about ½” down from the rim. It does not go through and is hardly noticeable. Round button finial on lid. In very good primitive condition with no chips or cracks. But it does show some wear to the glaze on top of the lid, mainly around the finial and on top of the handle. Crock measures Dimensions(all are appx) Height top of handle to base = 41 inches Height of crock = 16 1/2 inches Width of crock = 33 inches Opening = 10 inches. It comes with Wooden Lid which I am not sure if original and a wooden dasher. The only flaws noted is a hairline crack on the base of churn. There are no manufacturers marks that I could find so I'm not 100% sure of the maker- churn is very similar to the Red Wing churns I have seen. I bought this butter churn from an antique mall over 30 years ago and have taken precious care of this piece but is now time to sell. 19th Century Butter Crock This butter crock is a light gray salt- glazed with a blue decoration that says"Butter" And a decoration that goes all the way around the crock. Minor pitting from the glaze and a few areas where the glaze flaked off and it is dark. But no chips, hairlines, or cracks. No major damage. The crock measures 6 1/4" in diameter and 4 1/8" tall. I believe the manufacturer was the Monmouth Pottery Co. The crock has the letter"M" the number"2" that appears to be hand decorated in cobalt blue. Crock is well over 100 years old and does not leak. There is some crazing on the lid& signs of normal wear throughout. Overall condition is very good.
