Antique Primitive Hand Painted Stoneware Covered Crock/Jar Description. This is a Fantastic Antique Tall Stoneware covered crock/jar with hand painted floral design. This was acquired from an elderly estate in excellent Antique condition with normal signs of age and wear/loss of paint. The crock/jar measures app 9 and 1/8" in height by app 6.5" across the base. There are no cracks or breaks. But does have some mild chipping on the edge of the lid(see pictures) and normal glaze blemish's that you would expect in old Stoneware(see pictures) as well as wear to the painted floral design on the front of the jar at the rim and on the lid most of the paint is worn. Vintage French style butter crock or butter bell with hand painted details VGC
Up for auction is a beautiful. Vintage, hand thrown earthenware French-style butter crock with hand painted details in dark green.The idea behind storing butter at room temperature in this type of container has been around since the Middle Ages and relies on water evaporation as the cooling method. More information on the history and how to use this piece can be seen below. Basically you put your softened butter inside the center core of the lid. Place a small amount of water in the outer crock, then place the lid on. It will keep fresh and spreadable for a week or two, except in room temperatures over 80 degrees. Antique Ironstone/Stoneware Hand Painted Pot/Crock With Lid Illegible Maker's Mark- This is a nice old hand painted ironstone pot or covered container. With an illegible mark that I wish someone could help me identify. I've looked through every antique pottery mark I could find. But couldn't find this one. It appears to be written in English because one of the words in the center circle is clearly'ware' The pot is 4 1/2" tall and 6" to the top of the lid handle when the lid is on. It is 5 3/4" in diameter at the widest opening and the lid is 5 1/8" in diameter. The rose motif is clearly hand painted with a pearly. Iridescent glaze over it. Some of the areas at the bottom of the circles with the roses have a purplish hue. CONDITION It's in very nice condition for its age with some discoloration around ... morethe inside lip that isn't protected by the glaze.this is of both the pot and lid. There are a couple of minor chips. Or crazing under the pot. There are minor white spots on the lid handle. I'll say now that I believe it's ironstone. But it may be stoneware. This beautiful old crock was purchased at the estate sale of a collector. It is about 8 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches diameter at the opening. The unusual design includes a raised floral pattern that is hand painted. The paint is worn off some with age and use. Most of these old crocks were used in the kitchen on a daily basis- possibly as a cookie jar or lard container- so it is common to have chips as this one does around the lid. Item is hand painted: Blue flowers with yellow centers; yellow flowers with light brown petal tips; red wine colored flowers with yellow centers; dark green and light green foliage. Top border edges are painted light brown. Bottom is stamped under the glaze"MADE IN JAPAN" Front of box does not have square front corners. They are angled. Please refer to pictures. There are also manufacturing defects on the lid. The crock and lid are covered in crazing– it’s old. There are dark spots on the bottom of the crock. The red around the opening is worn. Painted flowers look pretty good. Measures approximately 9” tall. Lid measures approximately 4 1/2” in diameter. This would make a great display piece. If there is any cleaning needed. Several old chips on the rim/inside rim and 2 very small paint flakes on crock and some very small bits of faded paint on flowers. Otherwise great. It is quite common for crocks to have chips. I don’t believe it detracts from the beauty of this old crock. The glaze is just gorgeous and so are the hand painted flowers. It is quite heavy for such a small crock. Signed on the bottom by the artist. and on the lid) and on the body of the crock) M. Nehlsen and from Chico, CA. We believe the C+J stands for the Christian and Johnson store, to which the artist probably painted it for at the time. Great old patina, and is in beautiful condition. Description: Vintage/Antique Brown Crock with Side Tab Handles. Very nice shiny brown glaze with hand painted green. Red and yellow flowers. It is trimmed out in green around the top and the tip of the lid, with a bit of fading. Some color on the flowers has faded off. Mark: Stamped USA on bottom.
