Late 1800's salt glazed stoneware crock with cobalt decoration. This crock features 4 squiggly horizontal stripes. This crock stands approximately ... more10" in height. Is 6" in diameter at the base, and 6.25" in diameter at the rim. It came out of a north-central West Virginia estate(about 5-min from the PA boarder) so it could be easily be either a SW PA or WV piece. This crock is essentially as-made. But does have a few noteworthy firing defects. Most notably, there is a 3" glaze crack running from the edge if the base up into the lower left side of the decoration when viewed head-on. The crack does not go into the inside, and no evidence of moisture was present after leaving it full of water overnight. There is a 5mm glaze pop to the left side of the decoration, but I believe this to be a firing defect due to the presence of glaze around the edges of the defect. On the inside there is a surface line extending from the rim, but it does not go through to the front of the crock. You may notice what looks like cracks on the underside in the photo of the base. This is neither cracking nor crazing. It is a fluctuation in the natural color. Overall a great piece, and I'll be sad to see it go! This crock ships double boxed and insured via USPS or your preferred shipper. If you wish to change shipping preferences. Please contact me prior to purchase. Local pickup is always welcome. Brothers James and William"Leet" Hamilton founded their pottery company in 1850 and operated it until 1866 until it was sold to Leet's son and son-in-law. That said, considering the age of this canning crock, it is in amazing condition. There is one pretty good chip out of the inner wax-sealing lip and one very small hairline that runs down the front left just a couple inches. No other cracks, hairlines or otherwise. There are a couple of spots of paint on the back of it as you can see in the pictures and measures 8" tall x 4 1/4" in diameter at the top x 5 1/4" in diameter at the base. This shape is fantastic. Near and dear to antique Stoneware Collectors. Is this very nice estate fresh pickin' from a local estate.a beautiful condition Jug in one gallon Salt Glaze size, to hold various liquids of yesteryear perhaps vinegar, salt brine, fermented juice, things we no longer drink today but better known as, The Good Old Days, to those of us born, before the button pushing e-techno-tronic digital age. Back in those days, if you said"mouse" we meant that ... morelittle fur critter, not a plastic thing a ma jig. And a"screen" was a wire mesh you sifted with, not something you peered at plugged in. Likewise, the"cookie" was something Grandma baked, not some computer part. Ahhh, yes. Times past, the days when this JUG was new, selling for pennies at the country store as a utilitarian object now elevated to collector status desired by every Watcher out there reading this. The horse drawn carriages were clipclopping past at a lazy pace! This Jug is potted from northern grey clay indigenous to the area. But the extended time in the kiln during firing produced a most striking warm brown color layering over the grey peeking out underneath, rendering it appearing almost like Beehive or Beeskep! Horizontal rings of grey color peek out between the brown overlay in a most unusual effect a little bit different from the usual grey floral or later stencil patterns of the Cowden maker. Crock stands 10 3/4" tall on a 6.25" diameter base. The single rear strap handle is strong and perfect and the bottom is toasted light brown from the kiln with a desireable wire wheel cut marks off the potters wheel. Jug has a few random clay

Small Antique 1800's Pennsylvania Stoneware Crock Jug w/ Green Colored Glaze
Up for bids is a small antique stoneware pottery crock jug frpm the mid 1800's with a light green and dark brown colored glaze as pictured. It was probably made here in southwestern Pennsylvania where it was found in the basement of an old farmhouse. There were several potteries here in the mid 1800's and I do not know the maker of this jug. The jug is a dark brown color covered by a glaze with a light green colored tint to it. The jug stands 9 1/4" high and measures about 5 1/2" wide across the middle. It has an old cork in it that someone tried to remove and after breaking the top off the cork just left the rest of the cork in it. It looks like it would hold about a quart of liquid. There is one small chip on the handle as seen in the last picture. Otherwise it is in very nice overall condition with the usual marks from ... morestacking and being fired in the kiln. Being sold as pictured and described so please ask any questions you may have before you place a bid.
Pennsylvania PA Stoneware Conrad New Geneva 2 Gallon 12" tall Crock Sealer Jar
I know nothing about pottery. Forgive the terms I use. This 12" tall crock has a scallop chip on the inside, clear from the picture, chip doesn't extend through the piece, you can't see light through it. There are 2 main cracks, kiln cracks( I don't know, but they don't seem to extend through to the inside of the crock; crock seems to have two thick layers, an inside layer& a thick glaze layer. 1st crack is at 12 o'clock if the face were at 6 o'clock, and the 2nd crack is at 9 o' clock. Both cracks have"tributary" cracks, and the cracks both connect to each other along the bottom of the piece. Inside of the piece seems to show no such cracks, so it may be a crack of the glaze only. The crack along the bottom at 12 o'clock is a tight crack that also goes through on the outside but can't ... morebe seen on the inside. There's also a minor crack along the bottom and lower side at 6 o'clock. It also isn't seen on the inside. Any questions, please ask. I'm around for US business hours.

Antique Shrum Greensburgh Pennsylvania advertising stoneware crock
2 gallon R. Shrum Greensburgh. Pennsylvania stoneware crock. No hairlines or cracks, it is greasy with a whitish mineral deposit in one area. The grease areas show as lines in the jar so don't think it's cracked. Needs soaked and cleaned. Nice mix of freehand and stencil. Good contrast between the blue and grey. I failed to mention, there is some spotty roughness on the underside edge of the rim. Ask any questions.
