COWDEN STONEWARE BLUE DECORATED CROCK FROM HARRISBURG, PA - VINTAGE 1881-1888
Thank you for your interest in our auction of an ANTIQUE BLUE DECORATED. HANDLED, STONEWARE CROCK BY F. H. COWDEN OF HARRISBURG, PA. VINTAGE 1881-1888. This is a used item, that has been in my family from the beginning, in the 1880s, passed down from my great grandmother. It is still in fine condition. There are no cracks any where on it. There are two points on the bottom of the crock that my be chips out of it, or it may be that they were manufacturing flaws, but in any case, as can be seen in our photos, they are insignificant faults, and would have no effect on the use of the crock. What's more, they are on the bottom of the crock, where they wouldn't even be seen in normal usage. The crock is glazed both outside and inside, and there doesn't seem to be any crazing any where on the crock, inside or outside, that I have seen. ... moreFrom research that I have recently done on this crock, I have been happily surprised to learn that this piece representing the stoneware produced by the Cowden family of Harrisburg, PA, the capital city of Pennsylvania, is or was among the most highly collected stoneware in the nation. I am under the impression that the blue decoration and the salt glaze used by these producers was something new and important to the production of stoneware. This crock measures approximately 9-1/2 inches high, 9-1/4 inches across the top, 10 inches across the widest part and 7 inches across the base. If you become the winning bidder on more than one of my auctions. Contact me, and we will try to combine your purchases to reduce your overall shipping costs. Authentic Antique Stoneware "Cowden & Son" Harrisburg PA Crock ca. 1870-1880's
Thanks for taking the time to view our posting. We are proud to offer for your consideration this antique stoneware crock produced by Cowden& Son of Harrisburg. PA. Cylindrical, straight sided form, cross twisted wire cut bottom with wide, flat top applied rim. Overall pale gray salt glazed exterior with Albany style slip glazed interior. Great size. Measures 8" in diameter across both top and bottom and 7" high. The piece is in great condition considering its age. On the rim, there is one tiny old chip, approx. 1/8" x 1/4" This is hardly noticeable as the flat top of the rim is unglazed and so the chip matches the color of the surrounding gray clay. On the bottom of the piece, there is some roughness around the edge.part of this is simply due to the manufacturing process but there is a an old, irregularly shaped chip, ... moreapprox. 1 1/4" long and 1/2" wide at its widest point. Again, because the clay on the bottom of the crock so closely matches the color of the exterior glaze, this chip is not noticeable and, when sitting on its bottom, you barely see this chip at all. There are no cracks or hairlines on this piece. It is quite heavy and structurally sound. Based Ca. 1870's-1880's. Stamped with maker's mark on side of crock, just below rim, Cowden& Son/ Harrisburg(PA) A great piece of collectible stoneware! We are offering this piece with a low auction start price and there is NO RESERVE to meet! Or, choose the Buy-It-Now option.
