Early American REDWARE Stoneware Ovoid CROCK Jar Incised BEST Glaze RARE Handled
Lg. Early ANTIQUE REDWARE Stoneware OVOID CROCK Jar Jug Incised- RARE Handles This listing is for an early antique stoneware redware ovoid shape handled crock or storage jar with primitive. Out of round form. The handles on this crock are very unusual and rare. They look to be formed or pulled from the piece. Rather than applied as is commonly seen. The crock is indented, creating a recess behind each handle that allows for carrying. The handles are joined to the main body of the crock on each end. They have an arched shape that makes them easy and comfortable to hold on to. It seems to be an ingenious design. Yet I have not seen this type of handle before. And cannot find another example in any of the American stoneware pottery books. This utilitarian crock or jar was given some beautiful decorative touches with both incised and raised banding ... morearound the body of the piece. At the mouth. There is a rolled rim with two incised bands beneath. In the middle, at handle height, the crock has four raised bands that encircle it at the widest point. The glaze on this jar is stunning. With a wide range of color. There are shapes formed by the glaze that look almost like letters, perhaps a mark of some sort? Or maybe just a happy accident. I believe this piece is quite old. Dating to the early to mid 19 th century. Possibly even the late 18 th century. Though I don’t know the exact age. It measures approx. 12” tall and 12” across the widest point. The mouth is approx. 8-8 ½” across and the base measures 6 ¼” in diameter. The handles are approx. 3 ¼” long x ½” thick. The jar is in very good antique condition. It has appropriate wear for a utilitarian pottery piece of this age. The piece has no cracks or other structural damage. The lip of the crock shows a fair amount of age related wear. Most of the wear is superficial only. With a number of areas where the glaze has flaked or chipped off, but there are just a couple of shallow surface chips as well(please see pictures. The exterior body of the piece is

Though mostly wheel-thrown, was made in many ways. But it is the variety of form that is especially striking. Redware does not encompass only the familiar crocks, jugs, jars, and plates. It was used for everything from bird feeders to umbrella stands, mantel decorations to doorstops; there are distinctive basins, flasks, churns, mugs, vases, lamps, roof tile, penny banks, funnels and colanders, flutes and whistles, toys and molds. This comprehensive book provides a full survey of the country’s redware production and limns the regional characteristics that distinguish it. This book also includes a“complete index of every potter whose marks are known. The book covers by chapter: Redware Pottery ... moreManufacture; Products of the redware Potteries; Massachusetts; New Hampshire and Vermont; Connecticut. Antique Primitive Salt Glazed Crock Dark Clay Redware? Stoneware
This is an Antique crock in good condition. Good primitive condition and glaze. The base clay is a dark color, perhaps Redware, but I'm no expert. Large Earthenware Stoneware Redware Tankard Mug
Available for sale is an early tankard mug. The mug is most accurately described as earthenware versus redware due to its light buff colored clay. I'll post an additional picture of the underside in the next 24 hours. An uncommon shape& form used for personal use by contrast to the many utilitarian forms used as storage containers or vessels. The tankard mug measures 4 7/8" in height, 5 1/4" in diameter. And dates from 1840- 1865. It is in excellent condition with but a single 1/4" shallow flake on the inside rim. No other damage. Nicks, or repair whatsoever. An early earthenware tankard mug from the mid 19th century for your primitive country decor. Please visit our other listings of early stoneware. COLLECTION MINIATURE STONEWARE JUGS & PITCHER - REDWARE, ROCK. GLAZE, ETC.
You are bidding on a collection of 12 miniature jugs& pitchers- two pitchers- 10 jugs. The largest are the pitchers and they measure approx. 1 1/2 in. high to the smallest jug which is approx. 5/8 in. high. All in very good condition except for the Meredith's Diamond Club Whiskey which is missing it's handle- photographed. Some are on a red clay with striped glazing. Some have a Rockingham glaze, some brown, one white, one has blue drip over the white. They are crude but done that way and no other damage other than what I stated above. I believe that I had read at some point that other than being give-a-ways at the stoneware factories, some were made for watch fobs which would explain the handle being off the Meredith jug. Anyhow, you are bidding on what you see, all for one price. The photos show more than I could describe so ... morelook carefully at them. Thanks for viewing& please view our other listings.
