VINTAGE 1881-1888. ... moreThis is a used item, that has been in my family from the beginning, in the 1880s, passed down from my great grandmother. It is still in fine condition. There are no cracks any where on it. There are two points on the bottom of the crock that my be chips out of it, or it may be that they were manufacturing flaws, but in any case, as can be seen in our photos, they are insignificant faults, and would have no effect on the use of the crock. What's more, they are on the bottom of the crock, where they wouldn't even be seen in normal usage. The crock is glazed both outside and inside, and there doesn't seem to be any crazing any where on the crock, inside or outside, that I have seen. From research that I have recently done on this crock, I have been happily surprised to learn that this piece representing the stoneware produced by the Cowden family of Harrisburg, PA, the capital city of Pennsylvania, is or was among the most highly collected stoneware in the nation. I am under the impression that the blue decoration and the salt glaze used by these producers was something new and important to the production of stoneware. This crock measures approximately 9-1/2 inches high, 9-1/4 inches across the top, 10 inches across the widest part and 7 inches across the base. The edge is wavy in one spot and that is how it was made see last photo. Color of my photo is just a tad more yellow. The item is a bit lighter in color. Kind of a off cream. It has some crazing and that is normal for pottery this old. I am guessing this is around 1920's era. No chips or damage just the crazing. Decent shape. One hairline crack on the outside. Which can be seen on the inside. Two more very thin hairline cracks on the inside in the same area of the hairline that goes all the way through. Rust to the wire as seen in the pictures. Wear to the black paint on the wood handles. One of the wood handles is chipped. Some crazing to the pottery in the area where the handles attach. Crock has a very thin hairline crack near the top. see photos. Doesn't appear to go thru to the ceramic. Lid has 3 chips as seen in photos. Not sure if this is the original lid. Not including the lid this crock stands 14.5" tall and weighs 25lbs prior to packaging.

Flea bites, paint on the top ridge, there is a hairline crack that is 6" long on the outside and approximately 3" long on the inside. The top of the hairline crack is more noticeable than the bottom part. no other damage noted. Other than normal wear, the crock has been gently cleaned. I accept returns with prior authorization.
