Exceptional quality. Small alkaline or salt glazed, primitive antique crock. 6 1/4 inches high, about 3 inch top diameter, about 4 1/4 inch bottom diameter. ... moreLooks to be just under 5 inches around(diameter) in the middle. Nice luster, looks different in every kind of light. Glaze is nicely variegated- study photos to get the feel and look of this relatively heavy piece(for its size) Does not appear to be missing a lid- the way the opening was made, I do not believe this ever had a lid, at least not a ceramic one that would have been incorporated into the clay design when the piece was hand thrown. Looks like this crock could originate from the Catawba Valley Pottery, but just my opinion. Glaze& form reminds me a little bit of Pewabic Pottery pieces, but not iridescent. Not much wear given its age- glaze has rubbed off in a few small spots around the rim(see photo) but no serious chips or cracks. Bottom is unmarked. All sales are final- no returns. Please ask questions before bidding. Shipping to Lower 48 States only. No international sales. Payment due within 3 days of auction end. If you have a feedback score of 10 or less, you must contact me before bidding. In"as found" condition- this item is vintage, and not new. Photos are as important as my written description. History: The term American Stoneware refers to the predominant houseware of 19th century North America—stoneware pottery ... moreusually covered in a salt glaze and often decorated using cobalt oxide to produce bright blue decorations. The vernacular term"crocks" is often used to describe this type of pottery. Though the term"crock" is not seen in period documents describing the ware. Additionally, while other types of stoneware were produced in America concurrently with it—for instance, ironstone, yellowware. And various types of china—in common usage of the term, American Stoneware" refers to this specific type of pottery. Americans began producing salt-glazed stoneware circa 1720 in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania. And Yorktown. Virginia. By the 1770s. The art of salt-glazed stoneware production had spread to many centers throughout the United States, most notably Manhattan. New York. There the Crolius and Remmey families(two of the most important families in the history of American pottery production) would, by the turn of the 19th century, set the standard for expertly crafted and aesthetically pleasing American stoneware. By 1820, stoneware was being produced in virtually every American urban center, with potters from Baltimore. Maryland. In particular raising the craft to
Antique Brown Salt Glazed Beehive Crock- Canning Crock - Faded Folk Art Painting
Offered for Auction: Old Brown Beehive Shaped Salt Glazed Crock with Faded Folk Art Painting. The crock was probably used for food storage or canning and the painting on the side appears to be a floral arrangement of perhaps dandelions or thistles but it's all but faded with just an outline in teal/green and a little yellow. The crock has seen better days and is being sold as is. I have not cleaned it and I do not know if it will hold liquid. I am uncertain of its age or origin as it is unmarked. Condition: Poor to Fair given its age and use. The crock has surface spalling. Scratches, glaze loss and dings, nicks and chips and there is a chip/void on the edge of the rim. The painted floral design has faded leaving an outline of teal/green colored paint and very light yellow. There are spots of glaze and other discoloration on the bottom ... moreas shown. The interior is dirty and I have not cleaned the crock. The crock measures 8 1/2" H x 5 1/2" W and the opening is about 2" in diameter(inside measurement) and it weighs 2 lbs 15 oz A nice primitive addition to anyone's decor Payment Method: PayPal Please Shipping: USPS Priority or Express I will combine postage with other items if they are small and lightweight and fit easily into the same box Please ask any questions prior to bidding or if you'd like to see additional photos. Antique Crock-Red/Brown Salt Glazed Wax Sealer Canning Crock-64 oz.-8" H-c.1900
Hello& Welcome, Here's a beautiful. Old, hand thrown reddish/brown wax sealer crock made from red clay. It does have a couple of very small chips on the inside of its outer rim and a couple of places on the body where the glaze has flaked off, all of which may be easily seen in the photo's. It also has some"graying" on part of its body. It has some very nicely incised grooves near its top. I've taken photo's of every side to allow everyone to see how nice it truly is. If you use the zoom you can also see the grooves on its body from the maker's hands when it was being turned. This is a very nice piece that was made from the mid-1800's to the early 1900's. I believe it to be from the mid-1800's to around 1880, or possibly even much earlier. It was most likely made in the New England region as it ... morewas made of red clay. The area I'm from, S.E. Ohio, the potteries of the area(McCoy, Roseville, Hull, Peter's& Reed, etc. mostly used white clay for their crocks. It holds 64 fluid ounces and is approximately 8" high, 5 1/2" wide at its shoulder, 4 5/8" wide at its base& the opening is 2 5/8" wide. This will make a fine addition to someone's collection, or may be the start of someone's. Free shipping is only for the 48 continental United States. Please see details below. Thank you. Antique LRG 19c 2Tone Honey Brown Salt Glazed Lidded Crock Bail Hinged Stoneware
This is an antique stoneware lidded crock. It has a bail hinged closure. The flip part of the closure looks like part of the tip is broke a small piece of the tip? It will need a gasket to seal tight, and there is a small chip along the lids rim, see the picture. The crock is in really good condition for it's age, there are no chips or cracks that I could see, but there are some stains along the bottom edge. It also has some manufacturing flaws. It is in a 2 tone honey colored and tan. It measures 10' with the lid on, and 8" without it, it is 7" across the bottom and the mouth/opening is 3 1/4" Please see all of the pictures they say more than I can with words.
