Willcox & Gibbs electric sewing machine, attachments, manual, case
GIBBS& WILCOX sewing machine with electric motor. I am not a collector or authority on these devices. But will describe as well as I can. Machine seems to be in excellent condition. Finish is glossy. Decals are intact with minimal loss. Shiny metal(polished nickel? on platten and flywheel is clean. No apparent oxidation. Case is separating at one corner. But otherwise in good condition. Three boxes contain many small attachments. Knobs, and intricate parts. Small black box is original box for the light but now holding attachments. Pedal is stored in a black flannel bag. Pack of needles pinned to old fabric looks original to the machine. Pedal is in same fine condition as the machine. Power cords on machine and pedal seem to be modern replacements. Fabric cord on the light looks original. Is not frayed, shows almost no wear. Original manual ... moreis fragile. As is a second page of literature. Set of photocopied manual pages is included. Bathroom scale indicates a weight of about 35 pounds. Shipping weight will be increased by packaging- figure 40 pounds total. Shipping to continental US only. Antique Willcox & Gibbs "Case" with key for Electric Sewing Machine, Good Cond
This very beautiful early Original Willcox& Gibbs"Wooden Case" with the Original Key. For a chain stich electric sewing machine is in excellent condition, although it does have the expected chips, skuffs, scraps, etc. This Case is the finest I've come across, with its medium brown color that is uniform throughout, as you can see in the photos. The hardware is bright and shiny, and the key operates the lock properly. The case has a separate compartment for the Foot Control and Accessories. It is hard to believe that this case is over 90 years old, and has survived in this pristine condition. The case measures approximately 22" X 7 1/2" X 11 3/4" H, 13 1/4"H(with handle) This original case would make a very nice addition to someones collection to house their machine. A bit of rust on plate and wheel, very minor paint loss Motor brand is North East. Delco Appliance, General Motors Corp Electrical cord appears to have been adapted/updated and now has a modern plug Plugged it in. The light came on, pressed the foot pedal and everything seemed to operate smoothly Leather handle on case has split on top but the case latches securely. Is a little dirty, has one small spot of damage on top but otherwise in excellent condition I recycle shipping materials when possible

Antique WILLCOX& GIBBS SEWING MACHINE- There are numerous places where the machine and accessories are identified as Willcox& Gibbs(see photos) some show address of"658 Broadway. New York City" Patented in U.S.A. Great Britain, and France between 1882 and 1894 according to the metal plate on the sewing machine. This one was made in the U.S.A. The motor is marked"Willcox& Gibbs Sewing Machine Co. Motor" The metal plate is also marked with a chart showing"thread" silk" needle" and"stitch" Another area on the metal plate shows"Stitches To An Inch" Including the motor and the metal plate, the machine measures about 16" side to side; 6" front to back; 10" tall. There are pretty gold-tone decorations in numerous areas. Some of the nickel( plating is pitted. The ... moreoriginal cord has been taped. The machine is plugged into the foot pedal; the foot pedal is plugged into the wall. We have tried it, and the machine runs well- the harder you press the foot pedal, the faster the machine runs- rather quietly for its age! The original foot pedal measures about 9" x 3-1/2" x 6" The original cord has been taped. The pedal is marked"WG" as well as"Willcox& Gibbs S.M.Co. on both sides. Also included is a cardboard box labeled"Attachments for the Genuine Automatic Sewing Machine" This box measures about 8-1/4" x 2-1/2" x 3-3/8" it is worn, especially at the edges and corners, but it is in one piece and serves its purpose. Included in this box is a smaller box marked"Improved Tucker" with numerous pieces and paperwork. I dont' know whether all pieces are there. There are also other attachments- each marked with the W&G logo, but no other identifying marks or numbers that I can find. Western Electric Company Sewing Machine a Willcox & Gibbs Clone
This is a very nice specimen of a Western Electric Automatic Sewing Machine. Contrary to an other one on Ebay. I believe it to be from the 1920's not 1880's but what do I know. I believe it was made by Eldredge which became The National Sewing Machine Co. It is missing the motor and the foot control. It appears to sew nicely with the well known chain stitch method. This machine could benefit from a little more cleaning. I cleaned it and polished some of the bright metal parts and oiled where needed. I used"Restore" on the wood which evened the color and provided oil for the wood. It is far from perfect but presents it self well. The yellow decorations reflect silver in the pictures, it is really yellow. I will ship it double boxed. If you would like to pick it up, let me know. 1930 WILLCOX& GIBBS ELECTRIC CHAIN STITCH SEWING MACHINE Famous for the beautiful stitch produced on either side of work and ease of removing or locking thread. This late model original machine is in very good working condition and would be excellent save for decorative imperfections. Black enamel chips and some wear of applied gold detailing downgraded quality. Note the serial# pic to see one of the black enamel corner chips. Another near electric motor grease cap. All original rubber parts in remarkably good condition(still pliable! considering its age. Original wiring good throughout and with working lamp. Westinghouse motor also very good with only moderate brush wear and good bearings. Thick by today's standards, the nickel plating is naturally shiny, not polished for photos. Some of the included needles are new and others barely ... moreused. Accessories and tools are as pictured plus a carry case key. Once one learns to thread the machine and finds the 19 or so oiling points marked on the machine and diagrammed in the manual(s) operation is straightforward and can be very fast if desired. Antique Willcox& Gibbs Electric Sewing Machine. In very good working condition. Comes with pedal/plug. Machine and motor both run and move fast. Smooth and strong. Due to age and use, decal have faded and paint on motor has warn/chipped areas. Also lever/switch which controls the number of stitches per inch, has broken off and lever end. Replacements can be found, but machine still works and the stitches per inch can still be adjusted, just little harder since end of lever is gone. The serial numbers for this machine are- A656988& 15548. The reason for two serial numbers is that this model machine head was used on none electric machine before electric motors were added. The first number(A656988) is for the head of the machine, and the second(15548) is for the electric machine setup as a whole. No case, tools or manuals included. This is an Antique Willcox& Gibbs Chain Stitch Electric Sewing Machine. Serial number A681271 on the machine and serial number 18848 on the base. I offer 10 years experience servicing sewing machines! I also list all"detailed" positives and negatives. So there are no surprises when your machine arrives. Antique Vintage Willcox Gibbs 1880s modified electric chain stitch
Antique Willcox and Gibbs Sewing Machine Based on the Serial# A 373794 on the machine head and taking into consideration the two known methods to determine the age of Willcox and Gibbs early sewing machines. I can make an assumption that this machine has been manufactured in between 1882 to 1885. 1. From 373794 subtract 279638 = 94156 divide it by 17500= 5.38 T ake first digit(5)and add it to 1877 = 1882. 2. 638433/ 8000 = 46.7.Then add 1838 = 1885. The average of these 2 methods is 1883 or 1884. At some point later in its life. The machine was electrified. The electric modification is not typical of other Willcox and Gibbs sewing machines listed on ebay. Most have the electric motor going straight onto the flywheel to drive the machine. This one has a smaller electric motor with a pair of rubber wheels that when adjusted properly will turn ... morethe flywheel. I could not find any other Willcox and Gibbs with this design. The motor powers up and the light works. The rubber drive wheels on the motor need adjustment to drive the flywheel. The flywheel does turn smoothly and the needle moves up and down. The machine also has a knee pedal versus a foot pedal. The machine comes in a faux wooden grain case which the paper is peeling off and the closures have some rust.
