Antique Vintage Western Electric Sewing Machine Not Working No Reserve
My mother was a very active quilter and bought this sewing machine to display on an old sewing table. It does NOT WORK but it was a very pretty display piece and for the right person I think they can get it functioning again. I happen to think its value lies in a decorative piece. If you are a sewer or quilter or quilt shop owner you would love to have this on display. The main problem is that the metal piece that attaches the motor to the machine broke off. Everything is still there and as I mentioned for the right person it may be able to get fixed. The other issue with it is the hardware that holds to curved wooden cover to the base has pulled out. This is a much easier fix as its really just the wood screws that have pulled out. I attribute this to the weight of the actual machine when being lifted by the handle. This thing is made of ... morecast iron(I think) Take a look at the pictures and you will see that it is beautiful and in very good cosmetic shape. I’ve seen a few of them and some of them are in similar condition but not all of them have the attachments and rarely do they have the foot pedal. I took pics of what I thought was important but if you need anything photographed or if you tell me where to look for the correct model and serial numbers I would be happy to accommodate. This is a very nice specimen of a Western Electric Automatic Sewing Machine. Contrary to an other one on Ebay. I believe it to be from the 1920's not 1880's but what do I know. I believe it was made by Eldredge which became The National Sewing Machine Co. It is missing the motor and the foot control. It appears to sew nicely with the well known chain stitch method. This machine could benefit from a little more cleaning. I cleaned it and polished some of the bright metal parts and oiled where needed. I used"Restore" on the wood which evened the color and provided oil for the wood. It is far from perfect but presents it self well. Did not try to sew, the motor and pedal work, however the rubber grommet on the motor drive is very worn and slips on the sewing machine drive wheel. Pedal is missing the 110volt plug. They were only produced for a few years disappearing about 1918. This machine runs well. It has the vibrating shuttle. Shuttle in place. No attachments. I have not sewn on it as don’t know anything about sewing. Someone has added a light that works. It will come with original wood base. The bent wood cover is in bad condition and will not come with machine. Wood base is 20 x 9 ¾ x 2 ½ inches. Machine base is 13 x 6 1/4 inches. Base to top of head is 9 inches. Wheel is 8 inches. Antique Western Electric Sewing Machine w/Oak Case
This Western Electric sewing machine started it's life as a treadle to be placed in a standard treadle cabinet. Then was factory converted to be an electric and to be a portable. This was quite a big transformation. A number of changes were needed. The beautiful quarter sawn oak case not the least of these. Additionally a motor, specifically a Western Electric motor, was added with cords, plug and foot pedal. Perhaps as an extra cost option, a light was attached and this has it's own separate cord and plug. To wind the bobbin a clever group of levers and a large spring were designed. As a treadle, to wind the bobbin, the long leather drive belt was pulled over and looped onto the drive pulley for the bobbin. Then the doohickey on the hand wheel was turned to disengage the machine so that pumping the treadle peddle would spin the bobbin ... morebut not the machine. Adding the electric motor created an issue because the aforementioned method no longer will work. I won't beat this subject too hard but when you buy this machine you'll see why. The solution. As you see in my photograph, is to use a large spring to connect the motor directly to the bobbin winding mechanism and requisite levers to push the motor away or disengage it from the hand wheel. Now, the good old doohickey on the hand wheel, is no longer needed as the motor and the bobbin winder act together and are apart from the machine. Pretty clever and I must admit I was a bit stumped when I first purchased this machine. All in all, not a bad solution, it only takes a brief few seconds to add the spring and the still, very eager motor, winds the bobbin rapidly. The serial number is 203298 and my opinion is that this machine, in the guise you see it, was most likely sold in the mid to late 1920s. As time passed, these converted treadles were stopped being made and machines specifically made to be electric portables took their place. It is this issue, the converstion of a treadle to an electric, which made this machine of interest to me and it should
