We purchased this machine from a person who does not sew. We have found that the Wilcox and Gibbs was probably the most successful of the chain-stitching sewing machines. The"Automatic" was produced continuously unchanged form from 1876 to c.1950. Located in New York City. The company began production in 1858. The company was founded by James Gibbs, and James Willcox. These machines used a single thread to form chain-stitch seams so there is NO bobbin needed. The machines were easy to use and quieter than the lockstitch machines; they were also much less expensive. If you collect sewing machines or just want to display in your home then this is your chance to get one. This machine comes with. Its original manual or book and even some spare needles. I have found some patent dates on it, Nov 22, 1887-March 28, 1882 and August 28, 1894 and has a serial number of A696165. The following is list of things I have found might need attention? This auction is for a very clean WILLCOX& GIBBS cast iron table top sewing machine with hand crank option, New York-Paris-London This machine is in very nice condition retaining most of the gold letting and decoration, the handle also looks original. All moving parts appear to operating, the hand crank is a stiff, but spinning. The sewing deck is straight and clean with some ware expected, there is a needle intact, the chrome still holds a bit of a shine. The earliest patent date looks like 1882, and the last 1894. This auction is for an old cast iron sewing machine in the style of Wilcox& Gibbs. But I am not sure exactly who made it. It has the name ANITA stenciled on it, and the letter B stenciled as well. The brass tag looks to have the letters H Co. on it, but I may be mistaken. This looks to be complete, and has a lot of moving parts, and everything seems to move freely. Vintage Wilcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Co. Commercial Type AD with Foot Pedal
For your consideration a heavy duty Wilcox& Gibbs sewing machine and foot pedal. 28.5 pounds and will ship in a 20 x 12 x 14 box. This machine is a recent estate purchase from the Boston area. I've plugged the machine in and it does not start because it appears it is missing a fuse. A fuse will install in the front of the independent attached side motor. All the components are functional and turn or move fine. The cords and plugs are old and the rubber is cracking. I recommend replacing them. This machine has a direct drive piston that operates it verses a belt driven style. It makes it quite powerful. This machine does feature a stitch counter recessed in the nickel plated platform. Up for auction is an antique early 1910's or earlier Willcox& Gibbs Portable sewing machine in very good restorable condition. This unit is untested due to the fact that it needs a power cord! The motor looks to be in very good condition and it manually moves freely. The nickel has patina and can be polished. The original gold stenciling is all still visible including the plate. I have not polished this at all so it can possibly be improved a lot from here. This unit does not have a foot pedal. Marked Serial Number 40016. This machine has its original black enamel paint that has chips but can be polished up nice. The original flower decals can be seen. This auction is for an amazing early cast iron hand crank sewing machine produced by the Willcox& Gibbs Sewing Machine Company in about 1896. This machine is in amazing original condition. I can not find where another A series was in better condition. There are some chipping to the paint in one spot by the lower wheel. The belt was broken and repaired in the past with some steel wire. The mechanisms work flawlessly and smooth. This would be hard to be improved upon for the serious sewing machine collector. The machine includes the original base that is in excellent condition. This machine has the the adjustable stitches per inch feature. The serial number is pictured and is A 664075. Dating the A series serial numbers is difficult. This one is around 1896. the classic W&G machine circa 1890 Willcox& Gibbs The Willcox& Gibbs chain stitch machines are one of the most collected sewing machines of all time. Some say the sewing machine represents the finest piece of Victorian precision engineering in the sewing world. Their beautiful lines and superb stitching make them a collectors dream. Today every collector and enthusiast has at least one W&G in their collection. Sewing machine eye candy at its very best. James Edward Allen Gibbs 1829-1902 James Edward Allen Gibbs was the son of Richard Gibbs. A Shenandoah farmer from Rockbridge County. Virginia. He was born three miles as the crow flies from Raphine on 1 August 1829. His mum was Isabella Poague Gibbs from Connecticut. As James grew he worked. Like all children in those days, for his father on the farm and in his father's ... morecarding business. Carding was a popular business as wool and cotton had to be disentangled from clumps of fibre into a continuous thread for cloth manufacture. In 1845 a fire broke out in his father's carding business. Which he ran from a mill on the farm, and it completely destroyed everything. The business ruined, James at the age of 16, decided to leave home and strike out on his own. I can just imagine the arguments that happened that year and the sorrow as a family and business was torn apart. Little could they imagine as their son walked away from the farm with all his worldly goods over his shoulder that one day he would own hundreds of acres of Rockbridge and live the life of a lord of the manor. Over the next few years James tried his hand at what he knew best. The carding business, but each attempt failed to make a living, it was a highly competitive trade with many slave owners undercutting prices. So James tried a bit of work as a carpenter, machinist, millwright and even a bit of surveying until he sliced a chunk out of his own kneecap while clearing pines in West Virginia. Found this at a Vintage Shop. And thought it was very lovely, most of the original paint appears intact, which is RARE, to find something of this age, is this quality of condition. Model# A679819. Does not have a bobbin. Also a small C- above the" A 679818" please see all pictures. Metal plate, also looks very nice in condition. Emblem reads Depos'ee Willcox& Gibbs Sewing Mach. Co. New York. See picture. I am not sure about the paint. I see one area, that might of been touched up on the edge, you'll have to be the judge. This has a small box. That displays the amount of stitches per inch, and a lever underneath that adjusts that. This does not include a table. Or motor, or anything else that may of been originally included, what you see in the picture, is exactly what you will be receiving.

VERY NICE ORIGINAL WILLCOX AND GIBBS SEWING MACHINE IN VERY GOOD AS FOUND CONDITION.I'M SURE IT WOULD LOOK MUCH BETTER WITH A LITTLE CLEANING. BUT I'M AFRAID TO DO ANY DAMAGE TO IT. IT HAS STRONG GOLD LEAF DESIGNS AND VERY GOOD PAINT BUT IT IS A BIT DIRTY FROM THE PAST 100 OR SO YEARS. THERE IS A BIT OF SURFACE RUST ON A FEW BARE METAL PARTS BUT NO REAL PITTING. I TRIED TO TAKE GOOD PICTURES HOWEVER THE BLACK PAINT AND LIGHTING MADE IT HARD TO GET GOOD CONTRAST. I THINK IT'S ALL THERE INCLUDING THE WING BOLT TO HOLD IT DOWN. EVEN WITHOUT OILING, IT DOES MOVE FREELY. I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM BUT I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS. THANKS FOR LOOKING.
