Up for auction is a Rare Highly Decorated Antique Cast Iron Toy Sewing Machine by CHARLES RAYMOND in c1860s.Some people consider these toys but these were made to use. Charles Raymond started manufacturing sewing machines in partnership with William Nettleton in 1857. In 1861 Raymond established a factory at Guelph. Ontario. The firm quickly expanded initially concentrating production on it's Family chain-stitch machine. In the early 1870's the Household lock-stitch sewing machine was introduced and later the Family No's 1, 2 and 3 shuttle machines were produced.The firm exported considerable numbers of it's machines to Europe which were sold through various Agents including William B. It is stamped"Made in Germany" The dimensions are about 6 1/2" long x 3 1/2" wide x 5 1/2" high. It appears to be in Great Vintage Condition. But I have never seen one of these before and know nothing about them or if it is complete or not. What you see is what you get. This auction is for an old small sewing machine. On the frame it states"GERMANY" I could not find any other markings. The machine is missing a needle and the stud that holds the spool on top of the machine. The machine rotates and appears to operate the way it should- all of the gears look good. Machine does suffer from some corrosion on the plated pieces as seen in the photos. I do not see any cracks or breaks.

This antique"Little Comfort Improved Sewing Machine" comes with its original box. Instruction pamphlet and clamp.the latest patent date on the machine is Oct.19, 1897.I believe the machine is in good working order since the geared hand crank.lever,needle bar& pressure foot all move smoothly.the spool bar doen't move very much, but am not knowledgeable and don;t wish to fool with it.condition is good but it came out of a cellar and so the cloth plate has multiple pinhead dots.the major rust spot is the"T" in comfort.the bottom half of the box is in good solid condition.to top half has some apologies:one side panel is missing and the corners of the remaining 3 pieces have separated.please check photos carefully.the instruction book is complete.the pictures of the machine have great graphics.the top half of the booklet ... morehas age discoloring and a child had applied a penciled drawing. This beautiful toy sewing machine has been in my small TSM collection where I have used it as a display piece. It has been one of my most outstanding machines. It is a well-built heavy cast iron toy sewing machine and is somewhat hard to find. Especially in this really nice condition. This machine has not been tested for sewing. But the crank wheel moves smoothly and the needle bar goes up and down. There is very little paint loss and almost all of its bright gold designs are still there. It has a pull out wooden crank handle to turn the wheel-pulls out for cranking and closes down for storage. This is very rarely found on toy sewing machines. I read on the internet that it is chain driven. Markings include: TRADE MARK BW BAVARIA D.R.G.M U.S.A Patent appl. for Measures approximately: 7 7/8" long(9 1/2” including handle) 4 3/8"wide ... moreand 6 3/4" tall Weighs approximately: 4 pounds 13 ounces In my research I found the following interesting information about Bing Werke: BING or Gebrüder Bing(which means"Bing brothers" was a German toy company founded in 1863 in Nuremberg. 1897 Smith & Egge Little Comfort Improved Iron Toy Hand Crank Sewing Machine
Here is an original antique toy sewing machine still in it's box. This was made by Smith& Egge and has three patent dates with the newest being from October 19. 1897. This has been kept in it's box all these years and doesn't look like it was used much if at all. There is thread on it and I'll leave it as I found it. It cranks easy and makes a lovely sound. The original picture didn't have it's guide attached as it was in the box but I've since added it so it won't get lost. This also has it's clamp to hold it onto the table as pictured on the box cover. There is very little pitting on this and is in excellent condition. The box itself shows wear and has rough corners but has no tears and is intact. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
