We purchased this machine from a person who does not sew. We have found that the Wilcox and Gibbs was probably the most successful of the chain-stitching sewing machines. The"Automatic" was produced continuously unchanged form from 1876 to c.1950. Located in New York City. The company began production in 1858. The company was founded by James Gibbs, and James Willcox. These machines used a single thread to form chain-stitch seams so there is NO bobbin needed. The machines were easy to use and quieter than the lockstitch machines; they were also much less expensive. If you collect sewing machines or just want to display in your home then this is your chance to get one. This machine comes with. Its original manual or book and even some spare needles. I have found some patent dates on it, Nov 22, 1887-March 28, 1882 and August 28, 1894 and has a serial number of A696165. The following is list of things I have found might need attention? For sale this great antique Willcox-Gibbs cast iron sewing machine made in the USA. This machine is fastened to a solid wooden board base about 14 inches by 10 inches. And about 1 inch thick. It has a side mounted electric Continental Motor uses 110 volts 4.0 amps, and is marked as being model#68. The body of this machine is a round wheel shape, and the motor is connected to a 3 plug socket. Black painted with gold leaf filigree detailing. Machine is about 10 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 9 inches tall. This machine is patented in the USA on March 28, 1882, April 17, 1883, November 22, 1887, February 12,19,26 of 1889, and August 28,1894. Also patented in Great Britain and France. Machine is in good to very good overall condition, showing a fair amount of paint wear, chipping from long usage, handling, and storage. Welcome Purchased at an estate sale. When dissassembling for packing I broke off the screw(last photo) that is on the end of the bar that holds each end toghether. I could not find any other damage to the base. But it could use a new paint job. The machine and wood cabinet top are also being sold. I started to clean up the plate to see the markings. And I had all the intentions in the world of using this beauty as a restoration project, but its been sitting in my shop for some time now and I figured I would pass this gem along to someone who loves it as much as I do! I am very pleased to offer this wonderful super fancy and super clean base that was made by Willcox& Gibbs New York in the late 1800s. This has some absolute wonderful cast work with a great deal of Art Nouveau influence and some of the nicest designs I have ever seen in a sewing base. This base measures aprox 29" tall and is 19 1/2" wide at the widest point and tappers to aprox 11" at the top. It still retains most of its original bronze polychrome accent paint and if you look at the pictures you can see how this highlights the metal and makes for a desirable look and feel. The table is oak wood with an oak wood cover. The cast iron base is stamped with the name and patent date also. It stands 36" tall, 25" wide, and 16" deep. It is all original. There is wear on the table and on the cover. It has one drawer on the left. There is a lock, but I don't have the key. The cast iron on the silde pieces and the foot pedal are very decorative. Here's a nice Wilcox& Gibbs cast iron electric sewing machine-serial# B488204. The machine starts and runs and appears to be working properly. I've tried to date it. But have been unable to find a dating method for machines that have a serial# starting with the letter"B. Apparently the"B" models have a scalloped base which differentiates them from the"A" models. It's mounted on a piece of hardwood(maybe maple) and has a plywood box that goes over it and has clasps that secure it for transport. I have no idea as to whether or not the case is original. The unit weighs about 26 lbs with case. Cord, and pedal switch and will ship at 30 lbs. I don't have a clue as to what it's worth, so you'all can decide that! Vintage WILCOX & GIBBS OLD COOL! Cast Iron Sewing Machine Patent Date 1883 WORKS
What a very cool looking sewing machine! The curved neck is just wonderful! The design of this is simple and yet elegant all at once. The base it is screwed to is not great. But I am guessing it was the original base if the case. There are 2 attached plug ins- one is brown and one is white. The white on is supposed to be for the plug in for the actual machine. It DOES NOT MAKE THE MACHINE WORK! The machine works if you plug it directly to an extension cord or electrical plug in. The light that has been put with the machine DOES work when plugged into the white plug in! The sewing machine DOES NOT need a foot pedal. There is a knob on the side of the motor and when you push it up, the machine goes forward at alternating speeds, fastest being closest to the top- neutral or off is in the middle and backward is toward the bottom. The foot lifter ... moreworks great- there is a very cool window that reads"Stitches Per Inch" and this has a knob under the table that you can turn to get different sized stitches. The bobbin cover opens and closes easily- BUT I AM NOT SURE WHAT KIND OF BOBBIN this takes and there is NO BOBBIN! The Motor works fine and goes VERY fast of you desire. The rubber band that goes around the wheel that runs off of the motor and makes the machine sew is cracked and would be good to replace- if you know where to find them! There are several patent dates engraved on teh footplate area of the machine- starting with July 4- 1871 and the last patent date being April 17, 1883. This machine IS COOL- AND IT WORKS! It is a heavy item to ship, but where are you going to find one like this? I have cleaned this pretty well, but I know that it needs a professional cleaning and oiling. Machine has some heavy paint loss and age wear. Parts are still in moving condition when crank is turned but it is somewhat tight. Does not have a needle. Do not see any cracks in metal body. Antique 1870 Wilcox& Gibbs sewing machine with base and some accessories. Beautiful ornate cast iron base. Wheel turns and seems to function properly. There is a pin missing from the back of the wood box lid that sits on top of the machine. This is very cool and would make a great addition to any sewing collector. Shipping is $120. Willcox & Gibbs Cast Iron Sewing Machine "Butterfly" Treadle Pedal NO MONOGRAM
Classic ornate"butterfly"style treadle sewing machine pedal in cast iron. This was salvaged from an old Willcox& Gibbs base. The only other intact part was the flywheel. This appears unusual in that it does not have the WG stylized monogram on the center of the pedal. It is decorated only with what should be the center of the"W. seen in the circle area. There are no marks that would indicate the lettering was removed. You can see in the detail photo of the center that there is still casting sprue inside the circle. I'd like to hear from any eBayer who might know why this lacks the monogram.
