This was on an ornate treadle base with a patent date from the 1870's. I do not know exactly how old this table is. The wood has wear on top and is very dark in areas. The edges where the table folds has a lot of chipped and flaked veneer. There are gouges where the rear clips from the bonnet were repeatedly hitting the table. The hinges are good. There is supposed to be a support bar that swings out to hold up the table. That is missing. There are also marks underneath where a drawer was mounted on the right side. There are mounting holes for the frame. Each is a two-hole pair with holes 2-3/8" apart. The sets are 9-7/8" from front to back and 21-1/2" apart side to side. We purchased this machine from a person who does not sew. We have found that the Wilcox and Gibbs was probably the most successful of the chain-stitching sewing machines. The"Automatic" was produced continuously unchanged form from 1876 to c.1950. Located in New York City. The company began production in 1858. The company was founded by James Gibbs, and James Willcox. These machines used a single thread to form chain-stitch seams so there is NO bobbin needed. The machines were easy to use and quieter than the lockstitch machines; they were also much less expensive. If you collect sewing machines or just want to display in your home then this is your chance to get one. This machine comes with. Its original manual or book and even some spare needles. I have found some patent dates on it, Nov 22, 1887-March 28, 1882 and August 28, 1894 and has a serial number of A696165. The following is list of things I have found might need attention? WILLCOX & GIBBS 1887 AUTOMATIC CHAIN STITCH MACHINE
This a Willcox& Gibbs Treadle head. I have included lots of pictures so you can see all angles. There is no gold left on this beauty and some of the japaning is rubbed off the top arch. This is typical of these machine since that is the spot people tended to use to carry the machine head around. This machine has all parts, needle, thread spool, round feed plate. Those are the items that tend to disappear over the years. The sewing plate has some tarnish and pitting. I have sewed on this machine, it was recently oiled and gone over. Serial number is A392200, if you do the calculation that puts the machine about 1887. Dating these machines are difficult at best. I had planned to convert this to a hand crank but decided I would rather buy one already ready to go. The Wilcox& Gibbs model 64 chain stitch sewing machine“is the stable mate of many collections around the world” While in 1856 the four“heavyweights” Singer. Wheeler& Wilson,Grover& Baker and Howe Sewing Machine Companies were trying to solve the problems of patent litigation and did not have a time to address the issue of an average family’s financial limitations and they almost overlooked the market demand for affordable family sewing machine. In 1855 after James E. Gibbs saw a simple illustration of a Grover& Baker machine it triggered the new idea: The rotating hook on the main shaft could enter into the loop formed by the friction ... morefrom the treaded needle going up through the fabric. Elongate it and hold expanded while the feed dog moved the fabric until the needle at the next needle bar down stroke goes through the previously formed loop, getting drawn through it and therefore to form a chain. Then in 1856 after actually witnessing a Singer model# 1 machine in action(patent#8394) Gibbs has come to the obvious conclusion that the machine was too heavy. Complicated, cumbersome and way too expensive. He has decided to create a less-expensive and simple type of sewing machine. James Gibbs and Charles Willcox has obtained a few patents( major one# 17.427 on June 2, 1857) and patented the Automatic tension and feed improvements. A few more patents for the method of removing the twists in the thread that caused so many missed stitches on the early models and also a patent for noise reduction on the feed. After that they have formed“Willcox& Gibbs SMC” and the first commercial chain stitch sewing machine has been patented and produced in 1857 and became a great success immediately! This is a Willcox and Gibbs Automatic from before 1900. It is in good mechanical shape. Things turn freely here and the needle is present. Also included is the large wing nut and washer for mounting. The instructions are included but are so old that they are falling apart. Still nice to have a look at them. The spool holder is missing. This will be packed well in a large priority mailing box.

A Way above average looking, vintage WILLCOX and GIBBS Automatic Sewing Machine with Wooden Case. Foot pedal and booklets. Used. I sure had fun taking all the photos I could just to show you the nice condition. I've looked at a half dozen and haven't seen one as clean. Has classy serial number plate. Worst aging is in 11th photo on the plate top and that's not bad a few brown spec areas. The Willcox and Gibbs Automatic. A quiet sewing machine runs nice and smooth when plugged in. It runs immediately when plugged in. Fine motor. I don't know if there is a stop position tied to the foot pedal or what. New York City" Patented in U.S.A. Great Britain, and France between 1882 and 1894 according to the metal plate on the sewing machine. This one was made in the U.S.A. The motor is marked"Willcox& Gibbs Sewing Machine Co. Motor" The metal plate is also marked with a chart showing"thread" silk" needle" and"stitch" Another area on the metal plate shows"Stitches To An Inch" Including the motor and the metal plate, the machine measures about 16" side to side; 6" front to back; 10" tall. The fabric on the case is torn on the bottom edges(SEE PICTURES) Patent Dates are 1882. 1883, 1887, 1889, and 1894. It was made in the USA. It still maintains the beautiful gold leaf painting. It has some minor paint chipping and could use a good cleaning. It is in all original condition. This is truly a great find for the sewing enthusiast. This is just a beautiful sewing machine made by Willson& Gibbs. This is the Automatic Noiseless sewing machine super heavy and in just pristine condition. The machine has been tested as you can see the stitching in the fabric. The golds graphics on the machine are just so nice.
