We purchased this machine from a person who does not sew. We have found that the Wilcox and Gibbs was probably the most successful of the chain-stitching sewing machines. The"Automatic" was produced continuously unchanged form from 1876 to c.1950. Located in New York City. The company began production in 1858. The company was founded by James Gibbs, and James Willcox. These machines used a single thread to form chain-stitch seams so there is NO bobbin needed. The machines were easy to use and quieter than the lockstitch machines; they were also much less expensive. If you collect sewing machines or just want to display in your home then this is your chance to get one. This machine comes with. Its original manual or book and even some spare needles. This auction is for an Antique Wilcox& Gibbs Cast Iron Portable Sewing Machine It is marked#14951. Which this site references as being made in 1858. It obviously needs some TLC. I started to clean up the plate to see the markings. And I had all the intentions in the world of using this beauty as a restoration project, but its been sitting in my shop for some time now and I figured I would pass this gem along to someone who loves it as much as I do! For a machine that is 120+ years old it appears to be in good shape- again. As you can see in the photographs, there's quite a bit of rust but everything turns nicely and there's even a needle still on it. There are other Wilcox& Gibbs out there for sale, many of which are more ornate. However, keep in mind those are much more recent. You just do not see these machines in any kind of good condition and so complete anymore! We purchased this machine from a person who does not sew. We have found that the Wilcox and Gibbs was probably the most successful of the chain-stitching sewing machines. The"Automatic" was produced continuously unchanged form from 1876 to c.1950. Located in New York City. The company began production in 1858. The company was founded by James Gibbs, and James Willcox. These machines used a single thread to form chain-stitch seams so there is NO bobbin needed. It probably went to either a Wilcox Gibbs or Singer treadle sewing machine. It has its original finish with a beautiful patina. And is in good solid shape with only a couple of minor scuffs and a small chip on the back corner(see picture) The outside measurements are 19-1/2” long. 10-7/8” high and 12-1/4” deep. The inside measurements are 16-7/8” long 10-1/2” high. And 9-3/4” deep. It has a locking mechanism on the inside and two clips on the back. The clips are 9-1/4” on center. Here's a nice Wilcox& Gibbs cast iron electric sewing machine-serial# B488204. The machine starts and runs and appears to be working properly. I've tried to date it. But have been unable to find a dating method for machines that have a serial# starting with the letter"B. Apparently the"B" models have a scalloped base which differentiates them from the"A" models. It's mounted on a piece of hardwood(maybe maple) and has a plywood box that goes over it and has clasps that secure it for transport. I have no idea as to whether or not the case is original. The unit weighs about 26 lbs with case. Cord, and pedal switch and will ship at 30 lbs. I don't have a clue as to what it's worth, so you'all can decide that! James Edward Allen Gibbs 1829-1902 James Edward Allen Gibbs was the son of Richard Gibbs. A Shenandoah farmer from Rockbridge County. Virginia. He was born three miles as the crow flies from Raphine on 1 August 1829. His mum was Isabella Poague Gibbs from Connecticut. As James grew he worked. Like all children in those days, for his father on the farm and in his father's ... morecarding business. Carding was a popular business as wool and cotton had to be disentangled from clumps of fibre into a continuous thread for cloth manufacture. In 1845 a fire broke out in his father's carding business. Which he ran from a mill on the farm, and it completely destroyed everything. The business ruined, James at the age of 16, decided to leave home and strike out on his own. I can just imagine the arguments that happened that year and the sorrow as a family and business was torn apart. Little could they imagine as their son walked away from the farm with all his worldly goods over his shoulder that one day he would own hundreds of acres of Rockbridge and live the life of a lord of the manor. Over the next few years James tried his hand at what he knew best. The carding business, but each attempt failed to make a living, it was a highly competitive trade with many slave owners undercutting prices. Up for bids is this beautiful working Wilcox& Gibbs sewing machine in its original wood case. There are a few accessories which come with it as pictured. The machine is in excellent condition as you can see from the photos. The paint is very good with only minor loss to a few of the gold decorations. The cords on both the machine and foot pedal are in great shape too. The original wood case is in good shape. All of the brass corners are intact. You'll look a long time to find a nicer one! Part of a large antique sewing machine collection. All the machines that are up for sale are unrestored and untouched. I am not at all an expert in this field and I only give the information that I received with the machines. This is a cast iron Wilcox and Gibbs sewing machine from around 1877 according to the serial no. which is A 296399. So quite an early A number machine. The machine is as is in the pictures and in working order. The wooden base is not the original but looks good and the wooden handle is also not the original. It has a different thread but with a bit of tape it fits. Of course you can fix it to fit well. The postage costs are actual postage costs. We need to pack it very well as cast iron can break easily on impact. This machine weighs approx. 6 kilos.
