Here is a great looking Mission Arts& Crafts Style Umbrella/ Cane Stand. It is quite large. Measures about 28" tall and 13 3/8" square. ... moreI am uncertain as to the origin or age of this stand but believe it might be earlier 1900's. Stand is in very nice shape but does show normal age appropriate wear- some scuffs/scratches in the finish, one area(shown in pic) on one leg where the finish has been scratched, and it does appear that a repair has been made on one of the top pieces(shown in last picture) Originally thought it was a scratch until further inspection- honestly don't think it is noticable. The rest appears to be all original finish, and worn areas can be seen in the finish especially on the top. This stand has 4'sections' in it. Each of the four legs are surrounded with brass coverings. Canes shown for display only and are not included. I believe there would have originally been a drip tray with this but is missing. I can send any additional photos that you request. Please ask any questions. Thanks for looking.

Designing Utopia. The Art of William Morris and His Circle" By Stephen F. Eisenman. Published by the Katonah Museum of Art in 1992. DISCUSSION: An exquisite catalogue with many illustrations as well as period photographs documents this important exhibition. William Morris(1834-1896) wished to change the political and social values of Victorian society through design. Inspired by Gothic and Medieval art. Cincinnati Arts & Crafts Furniture -Shop of the Crafters Oscar Onken Mission
Arts and Crafts Furniture. Shop of the Crafters” Published by Turn of the Century Editions in 1983. DISCUSSION: Cincinnati was an important center of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This book shows a rich variety of designs as an alternative to the pure rectilinear forms often seen in other Arts and Crafts mission furniture. That is all that most people ever hear about the Tobey Furniture Company. But there is much more to the story. The Tobey Furniture Company was in business for ninety-eight years. From 1856 to 1954. Tobey sold not only Gustav Stickley's"New Furniture" but also"mission" or Arts and Crafts funiture manufactured for Tobey by Leopold and John George Stickley, which Tobey sold under its"Russmore" trademark. Tobey also sold"mission" ... moreor Arts and Crafts furniture that it made in its own workshop, promoting it(as well as other styles of furniture) as"Tobey Hand-Made Furniture. The Tobey brothers, Charles and Frank, were leaders in the Chicago business community and in the national furniture industry. This book provides not only an illustrated 38-page history of the Tobey Furniture Company, but also provides for the first time unabridged reprints of Tobey's 1900 New Furniture catalogue, Tobey's 1901 New Furniture in Weathered Oak catalogue, and Tobey's 1903 Russmore Furniture catalogue. Size: Softcover. 9" by 12" Language: English Illustrations: 190 full-color photographs. And 275 black-and-white illustrations"This large format. Beautifully illustrated book features the decorative arts of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Influenced by developments in Europe, American proponents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries successfully promoted the"minor arts" as fine art. These pieces were hand wrought by individual ... morecraftsmen. Extolling the virtues of everyday objects and returning to honest, simple, forthright materials and workmanship. Ironically, most products were actually hybrids made by many hands and often by machines as well. Still the designs are perhaps the closest embodiment we have of an American style. Represented here are the finest expressions of the movement. Based on the Palevsky/Evans Collection. One of the most comprehensive private arts and crafts collections in the United States, and related works from the museum. This catalogue highlights some 250 decorative arts pieces, dating from the 1880s to the 1930s. Included are furniture. PRAIRIE SCHOOL ARTS CRAFTS ARCHITECTURE FURNITURE SULLIVAN ELMSLIE IANNELLI FLW
HERE’S THE SCARCE OUT-OF-PRINT 304-PAGE SOFTCOVER BOOK“THE PRAIRIE SCHOOL TRADITION: THE PRAIRIE SCHOOL ARCHIVES OF THE MILWAUKEE ART CENTER” EDITED BY BRIAN A. SPENCER! Originally published in 1979 by the Whitney Library of Design/Watson-Guptill Publications of New York as a hardcover edition. This scarce out-of-print 304-page 1st softcover edition from 1985 provides the following statement: The book surveys the profound impact of the Prairie School on American architecture from the 19th century through the present in three stages: roots, growth, and horizon. Roots are traced through the works of H. H. Richardson, the firm of Adler and Sullivan, and the early works of Frank Lloyd Wright. Growth progresses under the leadership of Wright, who invented the label“Prairie Style. Wright’s new sensitivity toward defining space was practiced by ... morea number of architects. Artists, and designers, many of whom had trained under him or in the office of Adler and Sullivan. Besides Frank Lloyd Wright, those represented include Frank Furness, Walter Burley Griffin, Marion Mahoney, Francis Barry Byrne, the firms of Purcell, Feick and Elmslie, Spencer and Powers, Guenzel and Drummond, Greene and Greene, Claude and Starck, the interior architecture of George M. Niedecken, and the sculpture of Alphonso Iannelli and Richard Bock. Horizon explores the legacy of the design that is being practiced under Wright’s philosophy today and begins with his unexecuted projects. Continuing vitality is shown in the current work of Lloyd Wright. Alden Dow, Taliesin Associated Architects, Arthur A. Carrara, William P. Wenzler, Herb Greene, and Bruce Goff, among others. The Prairie School movement ventured beyond the mere creation of a new style; it redefined the American democratic philosophy through their design media. With over 300 illustrations of plans. Drawings, buildings, and objects, this book offers timely documentation of the Prairie School and the tradition it generated. To this end. The book is divided into the following chapters/sec
Book: ANTIQUE WILLIAM MORRIS ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT DESIGNS -TEXTILES FURNITURE
William Morris as Designer” By Ray Watkinson. Published in New York by Reinhold Publishing Corporation in 1967. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: William Morris. Master Arts& Crafts designer of the late 19th century, is often presented as backward-looking, a"simple-lifer" out of touch with the onrushing machine age. Yet his work was widely hailed by the modernists-Van de Velde and Gropius were admirers. How can the severe forms of the 20th century owe anything to this Gothic-Revival designer? Ray Watkinson explores the contradictions between what Morris was thought to have done and what he actually did, as well as providing an outstanding survey of his life and work. This massive book deals with the grass roots movement in decorative arts that flourished in England first and then in America at the turn of the century. With Gustav Stickley as its moving spirit. The Arts and Crafts Movement eventually included such notable designers, architects and firms as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Adelaide Alsop Robineau, Greene and Greene, the Rookwood Pottery, Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft Shops and Louis Sullivan. Together they forged a new, forward-looking aesthetic that was much more than a particular style: it was a philosophy of life, promoting physical and moral well-being…This timely book is both the most comprehensive ... moreand authoritative treatment of the movement available and a sumptuous photographic collection of Arts and Crafts masterpieces. Pictured here in more than 130 color plates are stained glass, furniture, silver and metalwork, ceramics, textiles, lighting and more, all specially photographed for this volume…The principles of Arts and Crafts are no less cogent today than they were ninety years ago, and all those seeking to create a meaningful home environment will find here an eloquent exposition of ideas and an indispensable variety of forms. ANTIQUE STICKLEY FURNITURE, AMERICAN ARTS & CRAFTS - The GRAY COLLECTION
At Home With Gustav Stickley. Arts& Crafts from the Stephen Gray Collection” Edited by Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser& Linda H. Roth. Published by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art& the University Press of New Enland in 2008. DISCUSSION: During his first years as an Arts and Crafts furniture maker. From about mid-1900 to early 1904, Gustav Stickley and his designers created the most significant cabinetwork his firm would ever produce. For the most part made of quarter-sawn American oak, this furniture was substantial, subtly proportioned, essentially rectilinear, and built using traditional joinery—for instance, tenon and key, dovetail, pinned through tenons—and employing hand-wrought copper or iron hardware. These structural elements were both functional and symbolic, literally holding the furniture together while also expressing ... moreits moral aesthetic: though a factory product, every piece was solidly, honestly made. Stephen Gray is among those few who, early on, recognized both the inherent beauty of Arts and Crafts furniture and the value of the Craftsman Ideal. His collection includes many of the rarest forms and has few equals, but in two regards, it is almost singular: Stephen Gray lives with this major collection and has embraced the Craftsman Ideal in a beautiful, simple, personal, regionally sensitive manner. He lives in a nineteenth-century country house and has integrated an important collection with the ideas of decorating, lifestyle, and sensitivity to environment that were central to the Craftsman enterprise. Through Stephen Gray’s collection, it is possible to explore the disparate values of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Arts and Crafts interior, and the tensions inherent in the pursuit of an aesthetically simple Ideal life. This lavishly illustrated book features Stickley’s furniture, including many photographs of Stickley designs in use, and it also includes some fine examples of art pottery, lighting fixtures, tiles, and color woodblock prints. The essays by David Cathers on Stickl

Catalog of Roycroft Furniture and other things” A facsimile reprint of the 1906 Roycroft Furniture catalog. Issued by Turn of the Century Editions in 1981. DISCUSSION: Roycroft furniture was not manufactured in large quantities. Nevertheless. It contributed significantly towards the growth of Arts and Crafts design in America. Furniture and other artifacts made by the Roycrofters at their community in East Aurora, New York, are easily identified by the incised orb and cross and/or“Roycroft” name. The 1906 catalog reprinted here depicts a substantial portion of the furniture designs produced under the forceful direction of Elbert Hubbard. The catalog also features some copper and wrought iron accessories. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6”x8.5” 47 pages, black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. New condition. GUSTAV STICKLEY CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOP ARTS & CRAFTS MISSION FURNITURE & INTERIORS
What is Wrought in The Craftsman Workshops” Published by Turn of the Century Editions in 1997. DISCUSSION: First published by Gustav Stickley in 1904. This is a rare and important contemporary explanation of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This facsimile was originally produced by John Crosby Freeman of the American Life Foundation in 1982. The text by Gustav Stickley sets forth his philosophy of art, architecture, and interior design and decoration, enabling a greater understanding of the man and his life’s work. The influence of Harvey Ellis on Gustav Stickley’s early works can be seen in many of the furniture sketches and room schemes. This book is a primary source and a must-have reference for serious students of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6”x9” 92 pages, black& white illustrations. HRH QUEEN LILIUOKALANI(1839-1917) For Sale: Queen Liliuokalani's choir conducting podium. Designed around her romantic Hawaiian love song. Aloha'Oe ~ a most unusual piece by Shapland& Petter of Barnstaple. Devon. The Shakespearean backboard bears King Henry's name and is quoting The Prince of Wales: King Owain Glyndŵr the IV(1354-1416) The"SHE" is referring to Princess Catrin of Wales(d.1413) Catrin. Like Liliuokalani, was a musically gifted female monarch from a tiny island kingdom. Both musical prodigies were unjustly stigmatized as*barefooted traitors. Both were robbed of their thrones and both were imprisoned at royal palaces. The presumed gifter is Buckingham Palace(Queen Victoria) but the most exciting thing about the piece is that Liliuokalani's never-before-seen musical notations can be found on the interior ... moreshelving! Ownership is as follows: 1891 ~ HM Queen Victoria 1891-1893 ~ HM Queen Liliuokalani 1893-2006 ~ President Sanford B. Dole. The Overthrowers and their descendants(113 yrs. 2006-2013 ~ Private Estate Condition: The podium had been stored in the dark& away from children for more than*100 years so the rich mahogany finish is in remarkable condition. We note minimal dings& scratches and a chip on one leg. The back molding that holds the two metal panels in place has been hastily removed& partially put back and the royal blue fabric that highlights the crowned-bird panel is likely replacing a piece of broken slag glass. Historical accounts of the overthrow suggest this damage occurred in 1895 when. While attempting to try her for treason, soldiers tore the imprisoned queen's furniture apart searching for hidden documents. A 19th century sketch of the podium describes the metal adornments as having an oxidized-silver finish. Typically, years of polishing wear-away silver but in this case Liliuokalani could well-have had the silver removed to better match the gold decor in The Blue Room or Gold Room(The Music Room) at Iolani Palace.
