Dating from the 1890s, this great piece features an oak lift seat, bevel glass mirror, ... moreand shapely cast metal hooks, in a dark oak stain. This hall tree was refinished by the previous owner, and they did a really nice job. They strengthened the back of the mirror with support sticks as shown in the photos, too. It is tight and sturdy, scroll front legs, lift top seat, applied carving on the base and shapely mirror top. The overall size is 36 inches wide on the outside of the arms, 29 inches wide on the inside of the arms, 17 inches deep, 18 inches high to the seat, 28 inches high to the arms and the overall height is 84 inches. It is about 82-3/4" tall, 24 to 26" wide(at different levels) and 15" deep. The Beveled Mirror is about 17 1/4" wide and 35" high and in very good condition for its age. There are 6 Coat, Cap Hooks, the two on top are Butterfly Hooks( unusual& rare) see picture 5, I have never seen these before or after we got this one) I don't know if they were on the Hall Tree from day one or if someone added them later, they are old and they compliment the attractive decorative carvings on top, plus they do match the cutout pattern above the seat perfectly.see picture 3) The Bench Seat has storage space under the lid. This beautiful piece was made in England around 1950 and is made from oak. There is a beveled oval mirror in the center. On either side of the seat are umbrella or stick holders with tin trays at the bottom. The hall tree has four standard solid brass hooks. Giving the hall tree a very Jacobean look are some small geometric wood decorations throughout. The seat lifts up to reveal a small storage space below. My wife purchased it at a Consignment Store on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena California over twenty ago. Of course, we are both up in our years now so the estimate on the purchase might be off a couple of years plus or minus. The shelf is in good overall vintage condition for its age. With normal signs of age and use, dings, scratches and other imperfections. A couple of the hooks are missing a screw or two, but it has several other hooks and the little screws can be replaced by the new owner!
