Antique Indian Solid Silver Novelty Barrel Shape Raised Relief& Engrave Decorated Tea Caddy c. 1890 This Antique Tea Caddy or Tea Box measures approximately 3 inches or 7 7 mm across the widest part of its central body from side to side and it stands 4 1/8 inches or 104 mm tall to the top of the finial or handle on its lid. The tea caddy is hand made from 147.8 grams of solid silver in the novelty form of a coopered barrel that has a slightly domed push fitting circular lid. The outer rim of the lid overhangs the body and it has a step decorated center with a ball shaped finial or handle on the top for ease of opening. The outer body of the barrel has engrave decorated strap s that segregate the body into eighteen shaped panels of which nine of them have an alternate plannished or hammered decoration and the other nine panels along with ... morethe lid have been wonderfully hand embossed or raised relief and engrave decorated with Indian village scenes. The tea caddy or box has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram and the underside of the body has been engraved with what I presume is an Indian silversmith or makers mark V75 all as photographed below, although I have been unable to find any silver marks as is very typical with these antique Indian silver items the tea caddy or tea box has been tested and it is guaranteed as being made from solid silver. I estimate that this novelty shape tea caddy was made circa 1880- 1900. The condition is used and Excellent for its age. The tea caddy has No Large Dents. England in 1916 by the illustrious Victorian silversmiths A& J Zimmerman at their Regent Place workshops. It is in a cylindrical shape and is fitted with a push fit lid. It measures 3 1/4" tall by 2 3/4" in diameter. It is very substantial- it weighs 121.3 grams- almost 4 troy oz. It is in very good condition for its age with less than the usual surface scratching from light use. No splits or repairs- just a couple of dings to the rear and NO distortion- SUPERB. It is NOT engraved and the lid still fits very well. Of octagonal form, impressively heavy gauge and exceptionally fine workmanship, distinguished by a very closely worked, foliate and floral repoussé design on a matted ground. Swinging handle and hinged lid in the same style, the shape of the piece is very unusual and it might be for tobacco, tea or other precious essences. The front is applied with Gold initials, revealing that it has been made for an important European client, and is most probably a one-off piece. The style is typically Cutch, quality and gauge closely remind the pieces by the greatest Indian silversmith operating in the late 19th Century: Oomersii Mawji. I am selling a decorative hand-engraved Eastern high grade solid silver Tea Caddy Box bearing Eastern marks to the base and dating from circa 1920. It measures 7.5 cm in diameter. 9.0 cm high and weighs 120 g. In good condition with NO splits or repairs. The lid fits tightly. It has a tiny DENT.
