A rare 18th century English silver egg shaped nutmeg grater with fine all over floral& swag repousse decoration. Excellent condition throughout with no damage or repairs at all. The inside of the lid bears the makers initials S.M. for Samuel Meriton as well& the lion passant on the outside. The other section has a full set of hallmarks for London 1789. Lid screws on& off perfectly. Grater is a perfect snug fit in the body, the rasp is still perfectly sharp. A rare Georgian nutmeg grater& particularly unusual to be fully hallmarked. GEORGIAN Silver Egg Shaped NUTMEG GRATER Samuel Meriton II circa 1775 This is a wonderful solid silver Georgian egg shaped nutmeg grater. Circa 1775, by Samuel Meriton II of London. It is of plain egg form with a screw closure and removable pierced steel grater. Inside the lid it has'SM' for Samuel Meriton but no other hallmark which was common around this time on pieces such as these. It is a good sized grater. Large GEORGIAN Sterling Silver NUTMEG GRATER ~ 1824~ Thomas Spicer~ Coventry
This is a large Georgian silver nutmeg grater which has a full set of English hallmarks. The grater has two lids. The top one opens to show the grater and the bottom one opens to the cavity where the nutmeg is held and then removed. It is a tall piece measuring approx. H 25mm x L 35mm x D 25mm. Hallmarks are on both lids and these show maker T.S. This mark has been linked to Thomas Spicer of Coventry. Also present is King’s Head. Lion Passant for sterling and date letter A for 1824. Overall condition is very good. Two things to point out. The cartouche is an unusual shape and I don’t know if that was the shape or wear. Both hinges work perfectly. The bottom hinge has three bars to hold the pins and and on one bar is a small piece of solder. I have tried to show the grater from different angles. There are a full set of hallmarks on the inside of the lid and a makers mark on the bottom of the main piece. The grill is detachable. This is a super quality antique William lV sterling silver nutmeg grater clearly hallmarked for Birmingham 1833 and with the maker’s mark for Joseph Willmore. It is in superb original condition and measures 1 1/2” 4 cms) x 1” 2.5 cms) x 1” 2.5 cms) high and has a hinged lid which opens to reveal the original steel grater. This is a beautiful nutmeg grater. Unusual to find one is such good, original condition with just a few minor marks. This is a fine quality antique George III sterling silver nutmeg grater of rectangular form with canted corners. The plain body decorated with bright cut engraved borders and clearly hallmarked for London 1790 and with the maker’s mark for Susannah Barker. It is in superb original condition and measures 1 3/4” 4.5 cms) x 1 1/4” 3 cms) x 3/4” 2 cms) high and has a hinged lid which opens to reveal the original steel grater.
