The lids and the sides of the box are finely engine turned. The box stands on four corner bracket feet. The inside of the box is wood lined. The box is large. It is 8 inches/ 204 mm wide and 4-1/2 inches/ 114 mm deep. It stands 3-5/8 inches/ 91 mm high and weighs an impressive 828 grams. The side of the box has clear hallmarks- lion passant. It is an 1870A 5 francs coin cigar or cigarello cutter. The coin is about 37 mm in diameter and the cutter measures 2.1" from top to bottom. The blade is marked ELOI FRANCE on one side and DUNHILL on the other. I do know this about the coin: It was minted in Paris. Letter A mint mark, a bee Mint Director's mark and an anchor engraver's mark. There were 1,185,100 in circulation and it is 83.5% silver. The mounting or cutter is mostly sterling and the total weight is 43.5 grams. It is an interesting collector's item. For sale we have this superb quality large hallmarked silver cigar box made by top makers Mappin and Webb. This large pi ece is made of a wooden frame covered in solid hallmarked sterling silver. It is hallmarked for England. London, has the date letter for 1936 and the makers mark for Mappin and Webb. It m easures 22cm/ 8 1/2" across by 14cm/5 1/2" deep and stands 7cm/2 3/4" tall approx. It weighs in at 930 grams of course some of that weight is wood but there is s till a lot of si lver in the box. I removed one of the feet and it weighs 12.4 grams. Total silver weight is about 311 grams. The lid has some scratches and the bottom of the wood box is cracked. There is also a strip of wood moulding missing on the left side. From its widest point at the feet. The box measures 7 3/8" wide. Below is a clip from an obituary from 1993; Retired Navy Vice Adm. Richard F. Whitehead. 99, who started aircraft carrier training on Lake Michigan in World War II, died Thursday in St. Joseph Hospital. In 1941. As aviation officer at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, he converted two merchant ships into aircraft carriers, the USS Wolverine and the USS Sable. About 25,000 naval ... moreaviators trained on those carriers. Naval historians have said the pilots who learned their techniques on these makeshift ships"were the top guns of 1943. This is a superb large silver cigarette/ cigar box. Rectangular in shape with sharp corners and straight sides. The lid of the box has a wide band of linear engine turning to the centre with fine diamond engine turned decoration to both sides. The box has linear engine turning around all four corners with diamond engine turning to the centre of each side. The front of the box has a polished rectangular cartouche with no engraving(no removal either) The lid of the box is hinged and the inside of the box is cedar wood lined. The box is large and heavy. Description Russian silver cigarette-Cigar case with niello finish with no monogram initials. the Assay mark G.K1882. Erik August Kollin St. Petersburg Postnikova-Loseva, I believe the silver content is 84. It weighs 83.6g. Overall measurements- 86mm by just over 47mm wide and 28mm deep. The Niello surface teqnique is a black mixture of copper, silver, and lead sulphides, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal. It is frequently used on silver due to the interesting contrast. I believe the hallmarks on this box indicate that it was made by Sanders& Mackenzie of Birmingham. England. This collectible estate piece has quite a few small bumps and dents-most are minor. The inside wood is in good shape except on the top. Inside, right side, the little trim board is missing. The box closes nicely when pushed down but doesn't remain securely closed. Superb 1920s GeorgeV Solid Sterling Silver Cigarette/Cigar Box Made By Robert Pringle& Sons Description- Nice Art Deco solid silver rectangular cigarette/cigar box with hinged slightly domed lid. The lid has attractive engine turned decoration with a central cartaouche which has the hand engraved monogram"GN" the interior of the box has cedar wood lining with a removable centre piece. The box is fully hallmarked with the leopard's head for London assay. The lion passant indicating 925 grade solid sterling silver, the date letter"k" for the year 1925 and the makers mark"R.P" which is Robert Pringle& Sons. Condition- The box has dints around the sides. Exceptional 1920s Chinese Export Solid Silver Cigarette/Cigar Case Description- Wonderful good quality Chinese 900 grade solid silver cigarette/cigar box with piano hinged lid and scroll shape thumb piece. The box has a domed lid with excellent hand engraved bamboo and a hammered finish and with a vacant central rectangular cartouche, the box has cedar wood interior lining, the base has"90" stamped which is 900 purity solid silver, also"silver" stamped and Chinese character marks. Condition- The cigarette/cigar box is in very good condition. description we are very excited to offer this absolutely exquisite handcrafted sterling box. this stunning piece is wood-lined and is a solid. Condition- The box is in good condition.
