A superbly made sterling silver castle top snuff box. It is hallmarked for London 1973 with the maker’s marks being CJV for C J Vander. A highly regarded firm. It has been beautifully and unusually designed in the style of an early Victorian example similar to or perhaps a copy of one by Nathaniel Mills. It has a cast lid with image of Buckingham Palace and cast boarders with engine turned detail to its reverse. It is in perfect condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs. The hinge works perfectly and the inside is clean. This was most likely made by one of his sons William or Thomas in the 1850’s. Mills is one of, if not the most, sought after English silversmiths in the history of fine English silver work. Superb George IV Hallmarked Solid Sterling Silver Snuff Box Made By Nathaniel Mills 1830 Description- Quality early Nathaniel Mills thick gauge solid silver snuff box with hinged lid. The lid has fine hand chased scroll leaf and floral decoration with matted background and with silver- gilt border, engine turned decoration and a gold central plaque. the box has a cast foliate thumb piece and foliate edges, with the sides and base having further engine turned decoration, the interior of the snuff box is silver- gilt(gold washed) The box is fully hallmarked with the anchor for Birmingham assay. The lion passant indicating 925 grade solid sterling silver, the Kings head, the date letter"G" for the year 1830 and the maker's mark"N.M" which is Nathanial Mills. Condition- The box is in good condition. ANTIQUE SOLID SILVER& AGATE VICTORIAN SNUFF BOX With agate top an bottom. Within a silver frame. THE TOP IS A SUPERB MOSS AGATE- SEE PICTURE No.3. Hallmarked for BIRMINGHAM 1839 and with the maker`s mark- N.H. For NATHANIEL MILLS- This is a delightful. Good sized snuff box in excellent condition. Opens and closes properly. The hallmarks are all on the edge of the base. The only fault is that there is a flaw in the agate on the inside of the lid. Which would appear to have always been there. See pic.4. the line, top right of centre. On the front edge is a small rectangular cartouche. Inscribed- T.A. 1887- Measurements: 65 x 42 x 20 mms. 2.8 x 1.7 x 0.7 inches. Nice Nathaniel Mills Table Snuff Box. Circa 1833. Four ounces of Sterling Silver and Made in England. Marked NM with a K in the year, marking it 1833. Large. Just under three inches long, almost two inches wide, one inch tall. In excellent condition, except for some darkened areas in the east and west front corners which may be the result of repairs, but if it is, they were very well done and do not diminish the visual or user condition at all. The piano hinge works perfectly, it opens evenly, snuggly and smoothly, with no yawn to the lid. With an opening bid that reflects my impression that it may have been repaired. Being sold"As is. Nataniel Mills highly sought after and collected silversmith. This rectangular box is fully hallmarked English silver,makers mark and year mark.Condition is ok just signs of general wear and use. The cover is engraved and reads: Is a token of respect to Mr.John Walker from a few of his female friends for his benevolent Christianity to the inhabitants of Port Glasgow March 19th,1833. Goldwashed(gilt) interior,it weighs 66 grams is three and one eighth inches long. one an seven eights inches wide,and about three an a quarter inch tall. As seen in the pictures this box has some dark looking patina I dont think it has been polished in a very long time.This box will make a wonderful addition to anyone collection. Superb Antique 1834 Silver & Gilt Nathaniel Mills Engine Turned Snuff Pill Box
This is a fabulous. Rare, antique, 1834, Nathaniel Mills, sterling silver and gilt, rectangular snuff/pill box, with engine turned engraved decoration. A truly stunning piece of Nathaniel Mills workmanship. Fully hallmarked NM for Nathaniel Mills, with lion passant, anchor assay stamp for Birmingham, and a gothic date letter L for 1834. A very crisp. Early 19th century, hallmarked solid silver& gilt snuff/pill box, made by Nathaniel Mills in Birmingham in 1834. It also features a beautiful original mercurial gilt interior. And vacant cartouche. Internally its stamped both top and bottom with the NM maker's mark for Nathaniel Mills. Considering this snuff/pill box is 180 years old it's in pretty good original condition with no dents. Dinks or damage. It does have some age related patina wear& gilt discolouration commensurate ... morewith it's age. But nothing unusual. Nathaniel Mills Nathaniel Mills was a registered silversmith in Birmingham. Between 1826-1857 and is undoubtedly, one of the most famous and collectable of all the Victorian silversmiths, his pieces are basically works of silver art.
