The entire box is beautifully decorated in repousse silver in a typical Art Nouveau style pattern of swirling acanthus leaves and flowers within a border of three parallel lines. The pattern surrounds a blank cartouche and there are no personal inscriptions or monograms of any kind. It stands on a plain raised base. This fabulous piece was crafted by the renowned silversmith Henry Matthews at the end of the Victorian era in 1899. It is in great condition- the photographs do not do this box of antique silver justice. It could be used as a very pretty little jewellery or trinket box. HALLMARKS: ... moreThe full English solid sterling silver hallmarks are crisp and clear on the base of the box. They are: HM” in two squares for Henry Matthews; the Anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office; the letter“z” for the year 1899; the lion passant denoting solid English silver. On the inside lip of the lid there are further hallmarks of the lion passant and the letter“z” to show that lid and base are matched and original. Similarly. Both lid and base are marked with the letter“w” APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS/WEIGHT: Length– 8.4cm at the longest; width– 3.7cm at its widest; depth– 2.2cm including lid and base. It weighs about 44g. CONDITION: The condition is great– hard to believe it is 115 years old. The gilt-lined interior is a bit faded. The lid still fits. The hinge is in excellent working order, and it opens and shuts easily. This is a charming. The silver box has a beautifully embossed scroll and bird motif. The lid is embossed with scrolls and flower heads. The front side has the hallmarks of the anchor, letter date Z, the lion, including the makers initials TH. The front edge of the lid is marked with the letter date Z and the lion. This box is superb craftsmanship, it is in excellent condition, very minor bends of corners on the lid and the bottom inside is a little stained. The hinged lid works well and fits tightly. Victorian Sterling Silver Pill Box Here is a delightful little round pill box made of sterling silver. The lid is hinged and it snaps down tightly. The hallmarks are Birmingham 1898. It is 3/4" high. 1-1/2" diameter, and weighs 0.45 ounces(12.7 grams) Fellows of Birmingham. England states the condition: General surface scratches. Marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. A number of small dents to the box; the decoration has also rubbed with some loss of detail. The hallmarks are clear and legible. This item has some wear from being used up until About 5 years When the former owner stop traveling to the city. She had it holding NY City subway tokens.
