RARE GEORGIAN Solid Silver SNUFF BOX Hallmarked Birmingham 1820 NR Maker: John Bettridge- Birmingham- 1/2 troy oz- RARE This is a stunning GEORGIAN solid sterling silver snuff box that was made in Birmingham. England in 1820 by the illustrious silversmith, John Bettridge. It is in a gorgeous octagonal shape with stunning engraved decoration to the lid and base. It is gilded internally and is NOT engraved to the cartouche on the lid. It measures 1 7/8" long by 1 1/8" deep and stands almost 5/8" thick. It weighs 18.6 grams- well over 1/2 troy oz. The workmanship is excellent- the lid is still a good fit but with some spring. It is in very good condition- less than the usual surface scratching. NO dents, a few dings but with NO splits or repairs- see photographs- SUPERB. The internal gilding is in excellent condition also. Antique George IV Solid Silver Snuff Box. Beautiful and heavy box which is not in original condition but which is in a very good functional order. The box is clearly hallmarked for Edward Smith. Birmingham 1828. So it's a little shy of 200 years old. The main part of the box is in excellent order still with quite crisp engine turned decoration and heavy cast sides. The lid appears to be original to the box but isn't hallmarked which is unusual. The engine turned decoration to the lid is a little more polished and the blank. Rectangular cartouche appears to have been added. Nevertheless it's a fully functional and beautiful almost 200 year old solid silver snuff box made by one of the leading Birmingham box makers. Victorian Solid Silver Snuff Box" The box is fully English hallmarked for Birmingham 1857 and the makers mark is"A.T" for Alfred Taylor who was a good silversmith of the mid-Victorian era. The box is in fair condition there is a small dent on the base of the box and I think that the cartouche on the lid was originally gold plated and this has worn through to the silver due to over polishing commensurate with its age. It is decorated with an engine turned pattern all over and it has an ornate thumb piece and the interior is gilded. The box measures 52mm x 30mm and it weighs 24.4 grams. There are do dents, dinks, splits, holes or repairs, the engraving is crisp and clear with no wear or rubbing what so ever, the hinge is nice and tight and in perfect working order shutting the lid even and flush, the interior silver-gilt is nice and bright and in good order with only some light scratches and tarnishing around the edges. The scrolling and thumb catch allow for the box to be determined. The right way up, in the dark. The sides are completely plain. Beautifully gilded colouring to the inside. This was to prevent the acids in the snuff(tobacco) from reacting with the silver. Shield shaped. Vacant cartouche on thelid. In superb condition. Throughout, with no faults. Victorian Solid Silver Table Snuff Box CILURNUM Ship" The box has a full English hallmark for Birmingham 1876 and the makers mark is"D&F" for Deakin& Francis who were fine silversmiths of the period. The box is in good condition(there are a few minor dents commensurate with its age and use) and the lid opens and closes well. It is decorated with an engraved scene of the Cilurnum ship at sea and it has a beautiful rope twist border around the edge of the lid.
