It is gilded to the interior and has a wonderful floral repousse decoration to the top of the lid and all four sides. The cartouche to the centre of the lid has been engraved with the initials MEH. RARE GEORGIAN Solid Silver SNUFF BOX Hallmarked Birmingham 1820 NR Maker: John Bettridge- Birmingham- 1/2 troy oz- RARE This is a stunning GEORGIAN solid sterling silver snuff box that was made in Birmingham. England in 1820 by the illustrious silversmith, John Bettridge. It is in a gorgeous octagonal shape with stunning engraved decoration to the lid and base. It is gilded internally and is NOT engraved to the cartouche on the lid. It measures 1 7/8" long by 1 1/8" deep and stands almost 5/8" thick. It weighs 18.6 grams- well over 1/2 troy oz. The workmanship is excellent- the lid is still a good fit but with some spring. It is in very good condition- less than the usual surface scratching. this is an Hanau silver trinket/pill/snuff box in the form of a table with a hinged lid. it has a well gilded interior and a good strong hinge with the lid closing tightly shut. it is hallmarked with the initials B.M. 925.and the letter N. with a standing animal of some sort on the side of the lid. and on top it is marked 925 and a letter E. Which has the characteristic planished hammered finish that is so sought after. Overall the condition of this beautiful piece is amazing for a piece of silver that is 116 years old and it has not been personalised i.e. the cartouche on the lid has not been engraved. A 1" square x 0.5" high vintage solid sterling silver hallmarked square hinged pill or snuff box deocrated on the lid with embossed harvest corn or wheat and on the sides what look like berries and flowers. The inside of the box is gold gilded and is in wonderful condition and having a good strong hinge and close fit lid. The hallmarks are very tiny and are on the underside and include a silversmiths mark of"N.O" A"925" for the sterling silver mark, an import silver mark for the London assay office and a date letter of what I think is"A" for the year 1975. Hallmarked Georgian Silver 1810 Snuff Box. Amazing Naval History Inscription.
A Truly Stunning. Unique and History Laden Snuff Box. Fully hallmarked for 1810, and with gilt lined interior. Approximately 7.5cm diameter and 3.1oz. This was sold at Charles Miller Auctioneers(the world's leading naval auctioneers) in March 2011. The history surrounding it is fascinating. The Pallas was returning from a cruise of Norway in late 1810 and heading for Leith. With poor visibility and frequent showers, lime burners' kilns at Dunbar(Scotland) were mistaken for the Bell Rock lighthouse. Altering to the wrong course, she ran hard aground and in a few minutes had shipped 12ft of water. Cutting the fore and main masts away to landward, the ships company, with the help of those on shore, were able to scamble over the wreckage to shore. Miraculously, I think) there were no fatalities. The fabulous inscription on this snuff ... morebox reads, A token of gratitude from the officers of H.M. Ship Pallas to the Duchess of Roxburgh and John Manners Esq. For their united efforts in saving the lives of the officers and crew of that ship. Which was wrecked the night of the 18th Sept. 1810. The entire box is beautifully decorated in repousse silver in a typical Art Nouveau style pattern of swirling acanthus leaves and flowers within a border of three parallel lines. The pattern surrounds a blank cartouche and there are no personal inscriptions or monograms of any kind. It stands on a plain raised base. This fabulous piece was crafted by the renowned silversmith Henry Matthews at the end of the Victorian era in 1899. These can be seen when the case is rocked in the light. The underside is similarly marked. But more so. At either end of the base, which have obviously been points of contact with a hard surface. Hand Chased with a Pastoral Scene of a Musician with an accordian next to a young lass meeting in the open pasture with a girl tending to her sheep with her staff in hand. The workmanship is Exquisite! The marks on this little gem have me lost as to the maker or country and age. On the top below their feet is the work GERMANY but on the inner rim once the lid is lifted are 2 hallmarks, one being a standing bird similar to an ostrich and the other a letter or number 1 or i(or some mark similar) The word STERLING is also on the inner rim. If any of you experts can help me decipher this, please let me know so I can pass it along. France uses 2 or 3 hallmarks like these, but not sure.
