Here we have. A rare George II Irish solid silver cowrie shell snuff box. With contemporary engraving to lid with the initials CM. Piano hinge. Bears the makers mark B.S below a fleur de lys for Benjamin Stokes who is recorded working in Dublin, circa 1750. No other hallmarks. Opens and closes with no play. Antique Mother of Pearl Shell and Silver Hinged pill/snuff/trinket bottle. The shell is like spiral pieces and has a lot of green in it. The top is hinged and has a piece of pearl on top of the silver. There is a silver base. It opens and closes easily. It is about 2 1/2" tall. I have taken pictures of all angles/sides so you can see the shell. I am assuming the cracking is more natural shell than damage. You can see from the inside to the light outside(like there's a tiny hole) on one side. Again- I just think it's the natural shell. Anyways- unique and pretty.

The Box is the finest example of it's kind that I have ever sold featuring a large Carved Shell body. Sterling Silver mounts and an inlaid Carved Agate to the lid. The Sterling Lid is finely and Hand Etched with an interesting Scene. I am told this is an early Georgian example and most likely Scottish made by the design. The Box is unmarked but the Silver mounts to test to be Sterling Silver. The Box is in excellent all original condition with some light overall wear but no damage and the hinge works great with the lid shutting tight and flush. The Box also displays beautifully measuring 2-7/8" long by 1-1/2" wide by 1-1/2" tall with a nice quality weight of 55 grams.
