EXTREMELY RARE 18TH CENTURY SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL SOLID SILVER MOUNT HORN SNUFF MULL with ORIGINAL CORK STOPPER/ SEAL Circa 1700- 1800 This is an Extremely Rare example of an 18th Century Scottish Provincial solid silver mounted Horn Snuff Mull. The reason i say extremely rare is that this amazing snuff mull still retains its original cork seal to the hinged lid, the horn snuff mull itself is very rich in colour darkening as it goes down to the curl at the end, this has a solid silver mounted hinged lid that is in fantastic condition, with an oval cartouche to the centre with an engraved family crest, the top of the body of the mull also has a lovely solid silver mounted band, this is in amazing condition and will be highly sought after as Scottish Provincial Snuff Mulls with their original cork stopper dont come on the market very often, my ... morewords and photos dont do it justice, horn was a very popular medium for snuff containers in Scotland as horn was readily available. This has a cartouche on the lid which is made from solid silver but there is no hallmark which is usual for the Scottish ones as they were provincial items and were made far away from the nearest assay office. These mulls would have been made from the horn of either a ram or goat. Often they had“curled” ends when made from the end of the horn, The actual word‘Mull’ comes from the Scottish dialect for‘Mill’ and of course this is where the snuff would have been ground down to a powder. The most common horn used was from a ram and they were heated usually in very hot water and then moulded into the desired shape. The practice of snuffing in Scotland began well over a hundred years earlier than it did in England. These mulls were called a‘Sneeshin Miln’ this changed gradually over time to the name‘snuff mull’ The rims of most horns were fitted with either pewter or silver, they are a great item to collect and with so many designs are a fascinating item to research. fabulous shaped horn cornucopia- I think it is a vinaigrette- please decide yourself lovely engraved lid which lifts up to reveal a pierced grill inside- the whole top unscrews so that something can be placed inside- I used to think it was a snuff mull but I still don't know! has a lozenge mark on the side so you can date it! Georgian Scottish Horn and Silver Mounted Snuff Mull Antique Description Please scroll down for additional pictures: Description: This is a magnificent silver mounted horn snuff mull from Scotland. The piece features a curled horn design with silver mounts and a central vacant cartouche to the lid. Around the silver rim is some personalisation of the original owners name. But I must confess I can't properly read the elaborate text. If anyone can help with this please get in touch. The silver is not hallmarked, but this is very common in these sort of pieces. The inside of the lid features a cork stopper covered with what looks like animal skin. Dimensions: The mull is approximately 3" tall. Condition: The piece has no hallmarks on the silver but this is common for items of this type. The piece has a split in the horn which has happened ... moreover time as the horn has changed shape. This can be seen in the detailed pictures(3) The hinge is nice and stiff but the lid is a little warped in places meaning that the lid does not close flush with the piece. All in all. These things are to be expected of a piece that is probably 200+ years of age and it is still an attractive collectable piece. Antique and vintage silver has been around for a long time and as such will always show signs of it's age and use. Silver is soft and attracts surface scratching and age marks easily. A rare very good quality Georgian sterling silver mounted snuff box. It is unmarked as is common but tests as sterling silver. I would date it to c1790-1810. It has been beautifully design being made from a deer's hoof and horn- most likely a hunting trophy made from a hunted stag. It has been beautifully made being unusually shaped with a silver rim. Silver stud work, a silver oval cartouche and bright cut silver hinge. It is in super condition the silver being free from dings splits and repairs. The hoof has light marks around the lid edge and a tiny hole near a pin at the back but neither of any consequence considering its age and rarity- see final photo. The hinge works perfectly, the lid closes well, the inside is clean and it retains its original lid seal. Magnificent Antique Scottish Ram's Horn Snuff Mull With Original Tools c.1870
A real showy stunner of a Snuff Mull. About as good as they get made from a single Ram's horn and decorated with Scottish Provincial silver mounts(which are unmarked, as they never are) and a repousse decorated hinged lid. The lid has a cartouche with an engraving which is hard to make out due to it's age, once opened it reveals a lavishly gold washed interior. There are two fabulous Cairngorm stones, both coloured from the underside, the smaller one which creates the Scottish Thistle terminal is a vibrant pinky colour. These are rarely found with their original snuff taking tools, this comes with all five on their original silver chains fixed to a Ram's horn mount. The lid has a snug fit and the hinge is tight without any shake. The horn body has a mix of lovely blond and brown shades of color. This mull is in excellent. Undamaged condition. MASSIVE SCOTTISH HORN AND SILVER TABLE SNUFF MULL A very nice Antique Scottish Horn Table Snuff Mull with a silver thistle on the lid. It is in good condition with a lovely color to the horn and the hinge is in excellent condition. The lid cork has been replaced. The band and thistle are unmarked. But this is common for these to be in silver and not hallmarked. The lid fits snugly and the hinge works beautifully. There are silver thistle leaves adorning the lid. Dimensions: 10 1/2 inches(260mm) in length and the lid opening is approximately 2 3/4 inches(70mm) in diameter.

ANTIQUE SCOTTISH HORN SNUFF MULL 18TH CENTURY This Scottish horn Snuff mull is absolutely stunning. The hinge is in excellent working condition and the delicate curve of the curled horn is remarkable. The horn is translucent and has a warm brown and tan coloration. There is an engraved medallion on the top lid dated 1782. The lid fits snugly and the cork appears original and is complete. Fully hallmarked for Glasgow 1840. This is a superb and large silver mounted powder mull with a long and gently curving cow horn. The horn has a finely chased silver hinged mount with chased leaves. Flowers and thistles to the domed lid. The lid has a central cartouche with an initial. The end of the horn has a chased leaf mount and the mull has it's original silver tools on their silver chains. The mull is 15 inches/ 381 mm long. It is 5-1/2 inches/ 140 mm high and the top is 3 inches/ 76 mm x 2-3/4 inches/ 70 mm. The mull is very heavy weighing 593 grams. The silver is hallmarked both to the lid and the mount as well as all three tools- Glasgow mark. Duty mark, letter ... moreV for 1840 and maker's mark RG&S for Robert Gray. A very unusual Georgian Scottish novelty snuff mull in the shape of a booted leg. The unmarked silver mounts with good clean hinge, the lid adorned with a circular cartouche engraved with a finely engraved crest of a horse. Circa 1800. In nice overall antique condition. The cork possibly re-built, as with many snuff mull examples, and with an old restoration to the foot. Hardly visible and extremely well done. A rare and wonderful snuff mull. Up for auction is an antique early 19th Century(1800-1820) Scottish made horn Snuff powder mull or box. The curved horn has silver mounts. Which have no hallmarks but we believe it is coin or sterling. The lid has a beautiful Scotch thistle design with a nicely done silver drape around the rim& a shield on the front.
