Date letter u for 1969 makers initials are B.Gs. Stamped to the base MADE IN ENGLAND. Over 40 years old and it is in very good condition with just one tiny dink and only mentioned for accuracy. Beautiful engine turned and linear decoration. Cedar wood lined interior. No engraved presentation inscriptions or monograms. It measures approx 10.9cm x 8.7cm x 2.7cm and weighs approx 259.4grams. The silver is in very good condition with just a couple of small marks and has polished up beautifully and though it was originally made to take cigarettes it would also make a great trinket/desk top box. The silver is in very good condition with no damage and though it was originally made to take cigarettes it would also make a great trinket/desk top box. It is still nice and strong. Description? FINE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN SOLID SILVER BOX St. Petersburg 1885 Impressive Russian antique solid silver box from St. Petersburg made in 1885. With a deeply grooved surface on all sides, a handmade button latch in perfect order, a beautiful gold-gilded interior with hand built rings to hold the cross straps. The box measures 3-7/8 inches long. Just under 2-3/8 inches wide, 7/8 of an inch high, weighs 4.6 ounces, or 131 grams. It is fully hallmarked with the Cyrillic letters of the maker who I think was Ivan Semenovich Gubkin. Vintage hallmarked Silver Cigarette / Trinket Box – 1959 by Edward Viner (495g)
Vintage hallmarked Silver Cigarette Box This stylish box is made from sterling silver with a wood-lined double compartment interior(which is probably cedar) The slightly domed lid has Engine-Turned decoration around a vacant. Oblong cartouche. It is hallmarked for Sheffield 1959 with the maker’s mark of Edward Viner. The base is some form of black formica material. This piece is in good condition but. As with anything that is 55 years old, there are a few things to draw your attention to. There is a small dent to the back right-hand corner of the lid, and two dints along the right-hand edge. The lid itself has about ten very small, light bruises to it and there are about seven very small dints around the sides. Please see the high magnification photos below in which I’ve tried to capture all aspects of this box. The wood lining is in very ... moregood condition with just one circular stain and some general whitish staining which I think is caused by silver cleaner. Superb Antique Sterling Silver& Cedar Wood Lined Table Top Cigarette or Trinket Box dated 1919 This Antique Table Top Cigarette or Trinket Box measures approximately 3 7/8 inches or 100 mm across its width from the hinge to the front catch by just under 5 1/4 inches or 132 mm across its length from side to side and it stands 2 1/4 inches or 57 mm tall to the top of its lid when closed. The box is made from a solid sterling silver body in a rectangular shape with a seven section piano hinged lid that has a shaped finger or thumb catch on the front edge for ease of opening and the box still has its original internal cedar wood lining that has a removable compartment divider. The underside of the body also has an inset cedar wood lining and the box has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed ... morebelow. The box has a total weight of 283.1 grams and the front of the body and lid have been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, H.J& G- Anchor- Lion Passant- u H.J& G is the silversmith or makers mark of Hobson. James& Gilby whose mark is recorded as being used from 1918 to 1927, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard solid sterling silver and the letter u is the date letter for 1919. The condition is used and near Mint for its age. The box has No Dents. No Holes, No Splits, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the box stands straight, the hinge is working perfectly, the lid opens and closes tightly with ease, the internal wood lining is in near mint condition with no splits and no cracks, the silver hallmark is partially rubbed or worn in places but still mostly legible although as this a used table top trinket or cigarette box it does have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss.
