Newly listed is this collectable vintage solid sterling silver pill/snuff box. The shape is rectangular with slightly curved edges in design. The hinged lid is slightly domed in profile. It is hallmarked in the bottom 925– standard of Continental silver. I’ve got it from my mother- at- law which was living in Paris for years as a diplomatic corps wife so I presume the box is coming from France. The dimensions of the box are 45 mm in length x 35 mm in wide x 1 3 mm in depth. The box weighs 17 g. The box is in very good pre– owned condition with no dings or dents. Solid Silver Oval Shaped Pill/Snuff Box There is no maker's name on this box. There is however a"CM" or"MC" intertwined on the flat oval lid. Which could either be the maker's name or more likely the name of the store that sold it. There are two clearly visible Sterling Silver hallmarks on the lid namely a"Lion" and a letter"K" If it is a London piece it was made in 1905. If however, it was a Birmingham piece it was made in 1909. There are also 4 hallmarks on the main lower part of this box but as they are not clearly visible I'm not going to speculate what they might be. There are some small dents and some tiny pin prick dents on the lid and underside. Twentieth Century Mandolin Shaped Sterling Silver Snuff Box London England Fully Hallmarked For Your Small Sterling Box Collection Details Description: A beautiful and very unusual small sterling silver snuff box in the form of a mandolin. The box has a repousse design through depicting a scroll on top of the mandolin and a scene showing a man with a cane in his hand and wearing a hat standing in the center of extensive scroll design. The sides are also decorated with repousse scrolls. The bottom of the mandolin is a hinged lid. Which opens to reveal the interior. The body of the box has an extension with curved end. There are sterling wires(the mandolin strings) starting from the end of the box going over a bridge and are tied to the curved end of the extension. The piece is fully hall marked and shows the leopard head for London, a Lion ... morePassant for Sterling a cursive capital"E" which is for the year, however, we are unable to find a reference that gives us the date for this letter and hence our assumption that it is probably late 1900s. There is als a maker's mark which seems to be the letters"GAD" within an oval. All these marks are within the central depression which represents to the opening to the sound box. We were not able to photograph it because the wires are obstructing the view. This is a great and unusual piece of sterling silver weighing 41.3 grams or 1.33 Troy Ounces. It has a subtle decoration around the lid as pictured, The previous owner collected little silver boxes so do please check out my other items as I will be listing several more boxes. It measures 6.8cm long by 4.8cm wide and it is 2.8cm high approximately.
