It is hallmarked with a Portuguese makers mark and the 916 standard mark(slightly lower grade than sterling ... moreat 925) showing it was made in Lisbon post 1938 pre 1984. I would date it to the early period late 1930’s- 1940’s. It has been made in the style of an 18 th century piece being made in the form of a shoe. There are faint signs of gilding to the sole. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs. The lid forms a good tight seal. It is a good size measuring 3 inches(7.5cms) long 1 inch(2.7cms) tall by the same wide and weighs 28 grams. A beautifully made very unusual and interesting piece. This is an antique. Solid silver, snuff box made in the mid 19th century in France for export. The top and bottom are both engine turned, but of different designs and all sides are concave for a better grip. The piano hinge is designed such that when the lid is open, the hinge is completely hidden– very nice quality craftsmanship.The hinge is tight and works beautifully, even after over 160+ years, and the lid closes perfectly into its recess. This is a lovely little box, still capable of doing today what it was designed to do all those years ago. Maker: The maker’s mark lozenge has been stamped. But the mark itself is unreadable. Date. Assay Office or Country: France c1840. Monogram/Crest: None– vacant cartouche. Dimensions& Weight: It measures 4.9cm x 2.3cm x 1.2cm and weighs 27gms. Silver Fineness: Not marked.
