GEORGIAN GOLD AND SILVER ARMORIAL SNUFF BOX BY JOSEPH WILLMORE 1811 This is a most attractive Georgian silver snuff box fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1811. And bearing the maker's mark for Joesph Willmore. The box is decorated with neoclassical engraving and was originally fully gilded, to the lid is inset a gold cartouche engraved with an armorial leopards head. Along the inner edge of the lid is engraved the name Dominick Sarsfield who was in all probability the original owner. The Sarsfields' were an ancient Irish noble family established in Cork since medieval times. Many of them served as High Sherriffs and Mayors of Cork from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Early generations of the family lived at Sarsfield's Court and Kilmallock. There was a Dominick Sarsfield(c1570-1636) who as 1st Viscount Sarsfield was ... moreCheif Justice of the Irish Common Pleas. There were many generations of Dominicks in the Sarsfield family. But records tell us there was a Dominick Sarsfield living at Windsor House near Cork in 1814. At the 1861 English census a Dominick Sarsfield(who was born born in 1790) was living in Cheshire. If he was the Dominick who this box belonged to it may mean(since it was made in 1811) that it was a 21st birthday present. The box measures around 7 cm x 3.5 cm and weighs 39 grams. The lid closes snugly, there is some general rubbing and several small knocks to the sides but the box but remains a very pleasing piece in good order for its age.

Exquisite Solid Silver Vinaigrette Box. Joseph Willmore, Birmingham 1814
Exquisite Antique Solid Silver Vinaigrette. Vinaigrettes were small boxes with hinged lids. Opening to reveal a pierced grill, also hinged. Underneath the grill would be a small sponge soaked in an oily fragrance. The boxes were carried around by members of the upper class particularly when travelling. Skillfully hand made by Joseph Willmore one of the top Birmingham toy makers of the Georgian era. Good hallmarks for Birmingham 1814. So its 201 years old and missing the grille and needs to be restored but it's not been messed with and there are no earlier repairs. It's well worth restoring because it a large and unusual one and grills themselves were often not separately hallmarked Large. Tactile and beautifully proportioned at 41mm x 28mm x 7.5mm.
