Solid Silver Oval Shaped Pill/Snuff Box There is no maker's name on this box. There is however a"CM" or"MC" intertwined on the flat oval lid. Which could either be the maker's name or more likely the name of the store that sold it. There are two clearly visible Sterling Silver hallmarks on the lid namely a"Lion" and a letter"K" If it is a London piece it was made in 1905. If however, it was a Birmingham piece it was made in 1909. There are also 4 hallmarks on the main lower part of this box but as they are not clearly visible I'm not going to speculate what they might be. There are some small dents and some tiny pin prick dents on the lid and underside. This uniquely beautiful box is spring-loaded; you squeeze both ends to pop the lid open. Beautifully engraved. There are no monograms. The back is unadorned, with slight scuffing consistent with age. There is one tiny dent on back side edge, and a pin size ding on the underside; I couldn't get a good close-up of either, but they are minor. Measurements: 3.5"w x 2.5"d x 1"h. On offer is a French 950 sterling silver snuff box. The lid is exquisitely engraved with musical instruments inside a cartouche. The side is engraved with decorative guirlandes and even the bottom is nicely engraved. Showing the high quality of this piece. Small oval in shape with a fine decorative rim on the lid and base.it has LOST its hinged grill. Hallmarked inside with a lion for Sterling silver. The makers mark is TW which is probably for the Birmingham Silversmith Thomas Willmore. And the letter b, dates it to 1799. It still retains its gilt interior. No problems with the hinge either that is why I take a picture of boxes open back and front to show this. Nice Hieroglyphic detail all over the box with a plain base. The mark you can see on the outside of the base is caused by the hallmark being stamped on the inside- not a flaw. There are marks possibly caused by tobacco dust or something else on the inside of the lid. No splits. Nice little box with no dinks. The box measures. Slightly under 1-1/4" x 1-1/16" including lip x 1/2 Weight. 17grams. Of oval form with embossed image to the top, and garlands and ribbons adorning the sides, dating to circa 1880. The lid of the box is beautifully embossed with an image of a shepherd sitting under a tree playing a flute. His flock resting in the vicinity. The entire snuff box has a stunning Gadrooned decoration which forms a swirl pattern to both the top and bottom giving it such a stunning look, this is so very tactile that once picked up you wont want to put it down, the lid is hinged with a lovely little thumb piece to help with opening the snuff box, once open you will see it still retains its deep rich gold gilt finish which would protect the silver from the snuff inside, the hinge still works well and it still shuts with a lovely sounding snap, i can find no hallmarks but that isnt unusual if a piece has been commissioned directly from the family, it has tested for solid silver, i would estimate this wonderful snuff ... morebox dates to circa 1880 judging by the shape and design of this beautiful piece which is very Victorian, making it over 130 years old, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this is of a large size and has been crafted with a good gauge of silver weighing 39.3 grams. This stunning snuff box was Assayed in London in 2001 making it only 13 years old but a definite Antique of the future. The design and decoration is so very stylish with its Oval shape and smooth finish giving it a very elegant and timeless appeal, the hinged lid os slightly domed and closes snugly and the hinge is in fine condition. The quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this wonderful snuff box is in lovely condition with just a tiny bruise to the top and one to the bottom to the body, just mentioned for accuracy.
