Each of these chairs measures 41 inches high from the floor to the top of the fancy carved back. The back features a lovely spindle crest across the top flanked with lovely carved finials on the shoulders, with elaborate pierced carvings with a scallop& ball design accenting the bottom that has almost a Gothic type influence. A fine pair of mid 19th century late Windsor armchairs in maple and pine with bamboo turnings.Found abandoned in the basement wine cellar of The Olde Foundry Street General Store and dating to the 1840-1870 period.Crafted with unusually wide proportions for this type of chair,they are extremely sturdy yet retain that airiness associated with the birdcage windsors of an earlier day.Maple with pine seats and hardwood stretchers,probably local ash.In excellent condition but probably resurfaced at some point in their life.However,considering that they were left abandoned in the wine cellar of the old store and date to the same 1850 period of the structure,they may be so well preserved as to have been found in this fine state. Wow…these chairs are stunning! I think they are 18th century.but the might be a little newer…definitely OLD…check out all of the pictures…so you can see construction.and carving details. They are super ELEGANT fauteuils(open arm chairs)with beautifully hand-caned backs…and the bottoms have been upholstered in luxurious Mohair(velvet) with down filled cushions. The fabric is black and has a super rich look and feel. The tone of the wood contrasted with the super dark black of the mohair is GORGEOUS. Another thing that makes me feel they are 18th century is the scale of the chairs…they are very diminutive…from the floor to the top of the back of chair is only 33 1/2" from the floor to the top of the seat cushion is appx 19 1/2" The actual"seat" of the chair is appx 21" across and 17" deep. I can only say CHECK ... moreout all of the angles…and the gentle curves and delicate floral carving. The finish looks OLD and appropriate…I think the wood is walnut. It's very dark under the finish)there are some places where the edges are"worn" away…if you look closely(it's not really too noticeable…and again, consistent with age)you'll see these minor losses to the wood. Pair Antique English Regency Georgian George III Ebonized Caned Armchairs(Click to Enlarge) This matching pair of George III period side chairs date from circa 1810 and were appraised for insurance purposes by Sotheby's in 1998 for $12.000. We will be happy to provide a copy of the appraisal. They feature parcel-gilt and ebonized painted finishes, and a seat rail with Greek key motif raised on circular turned legs ending in paw feet. The crestrail is baluster-turned. Seat and seat back are caned. The scrolling arms rest on paw supports. There is a modest tear to the caning on the seat back of one chair. Each measures 33.75" high, 22" wide, 22" deep and has a seat height of 16.75" Provenance provided upon request. Please page down to see additional images. Oscar Wilde A Wonderful Matched Pair of Victorian Armchairs in the Howard Style from Benacre Hall. Suffolk Period: Late Victorian Provenance: Sotheby’s Benacre House Sale May 11th 2000. Lot 1236 Date: c.1880 Height: 34.5 inches Width: 27.5 inches Depth: 37 inches(each and at extremities) The matched pair of Victorian Howard style upholstered armchairs being coil sprung and horsehair stuffed. One in oak, the other beech or possibly rosewood( on turned legs and casters, fully reupholstered in 100% cotton printed floral fabric with single piping and having been sold in the year 2000 at Sotheby's Benacre House Sale. The condition of the chairs is fantastic. Having been fully reupholstered. All of the original ... morehorsehair and innards to the upholstery has been retained. One chair has later rear casters, though this aside they are original order and prove very comfortable. The beech and oak to each is in fine fettle with just a few minor scuffs as one would expect. These chairs were sold as part of Sotheby's Benacre House Sale. May 11th 2000, Lot 1236. Benacre Hall in Suffolk contained the property of the Estate of the late Sir John Gooch- Sotheby's 9th.10th&11th May 2000. 1691 lots. They sold for £2400 which is approx £3633 now in accordance with inflation rates. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Benacre was the property of Fienes Lord Dacre. Henry North, of Laxfield, Esq. descended from the noble family of his name, purchased it in the reign of Charles I. In 1708, Edward North, Esq. dying without issue, left it to Thomas Carthew, Esq. his wife's relation, who in 1721, built a house here, and made it his residence.2] From his son, it was purchased in 1745 by Sir Thomas Gooch, Bart, and it has ever since been the residence of that family.
