French Louis XV Style Carved Wingback Arm Chair(or Bergère) Late 19th to Early 20th Century. Probably c. 1880-1910, France Item# 120012WIU03 This is a remarkable and precise work. A heavily and tastefully carved Louis XV Wingback Antique Arm Chair of the Rococo Revival period. This is a piece that was built to last with strong and heavy construction throughout. The crest is an ornate and complicated carving of flowing ribbon tied in a double-bow and interlaced with flowers that sprout over and along the frame, likewise carved carefully with a large twisted rope molding lined by a small twisted rope border. The arms flow down into curved handholds, the arm supports terminating in the frame with acanthus leaves sprouting up along the edges. These arms flank a deep and very comfortable down upholstered cushion, thick and very supportive, ... morecomplimenting the overall cant of the chair- by leaning just slightly backwards. This is a simply wonderful chair to rest and lounge in. The apron is an intense display of flowers along a vine, acanthus leaves sprouting from beneath the cushion to peak out over the edge. This is a really GORGEOUS antique French blue velvet upholstered arm chair with an oval upholstered back! Purchased at an estate sale they said it was very old. This is a WONDERFUL chair made in the style of Louis the XVI and I believe it dates back to the late 1800's. Obviously it had been reupholstered as the upholstery is in EXCELLENT condition with no rips. Holes, tears or fading anywhere. The blue color is just so FANTASTIC! It has brass nailhead tacks everywhere there is material- even on the back of the chair! The wood is possibly a fruitwood or walnut. I am not sure but it is a WARM BEAUTIFUL color! It has GORGEOUS gilded(probably painted) carved flowers on the crest of the back and the legs have all kinds of carving with a flower on each and deep fingertip grooved column carvings with gold too. Made in France Circa 1890 Old leather upholstery Wear to finish and leather Carved oak, This unusual French carved oak and leather chair is quite the antique. Made around 1890 it has several interesting carvings and is still in very good condition. The seat cushion and back rest are upholstered in an off-white or cream colored leather. This leather is quite old and most likely original to the chair. Although it is faded and rubbed(as you can see in the pictures) it is not torn and is therefore still usable. The leather it tacked down with brass upholstery ... moretacks around the borders. The frame of the chair is solid oak. It is heavy and quite sturdy. The most intricate carvings can be found right at the top of the back rest. These carvings depict lion heads giving the chair quite the regal look. Decorative carvings were strategically done throughout the rest of the chair accenting different points of interest. The ends of the arms are carved with monkey heads. The legs are an interesting curved leg. Each side(left and right) is joined with a stretcher which adds strength and stability to the chair. Overall this chair is in very good condition. The frame and structure is strong and sturdy. The finish on the oak understandably shows some wear. Especially around the feet. However, this wear is not anything out of the ordinary and adds to the authenticity and character of the chair. As mentioned the leather upholstery is quite old and worn, but still serviceable. We feel this chair is ready to be used as is in a setting that would enjoy an antique armchair. Unique hand carved European antique furniture. Circa 1880. This chair came from what is now known as the state of Rheinland Pfalz. Germany. This region is close to the border with France and was once occupied by the French. Elements of the carvings appear to be French influenced.
