French Louis XV Style Carved Wingback Arm Chair(or Bergère) Late 19th to Early 20th Century. Probably c. 1880-1910, France Item# 120012WIU03 This is a remarkable and precise work. A heavily and tastefully carved Louis XV Wingback Antique Arm Chair of the Rococo Revival period. This is a piece that was built to last with strong and heavy construction throughout. The crest is an ornate and complicated carving of flowing ribbon tied in a double-bow and interlaced with flowers that sprout over and along the frame, likewise carved carefully with a large twisted rope molding lined by a small twisted rope border. The arms flow down into curved handholds, the arm supports terminating in the frame with acanthus leaves sprouting up along the edges. These arms flank a deep and very comfortable down upholstered cushion, thick and very supportive, ... morecomplimenting the overall cant of the chair- by leaning just slightly backwards. The entire crest rail and frame is embellished with variated motifs of waterleaves, acanthus, berries and ribbon interlaced symmetrically around the comfortable caned back. The arms are upholstered to match the stuffed cushion(all upholstery should be changed or at least the tears repaired) the arm holds curving where they join the frame. The apron is carved in a similar manner, though with some restraint, flanked by deep carved rosettes inset on each corner over the turned, tapered and fluted legs.
