Unique 19th Century American Antique Hoop Skirt Rocker With Great Paint AMERICAN FOLK ART AT ITS BEST DESCRIPTION: Truly a unique piece of antique American ... morefurniture. Painted black all over. Then covered with dozens of exquisite, detailed, hand-painted figures including angels, human figures, insects, horses, dogs, ships, etc, in a gold decorated matrix. This one belongs in a museum. Classic design that allowed women wearing hoop-skirts to sit comfortably without the arms of the chair interfering with their dress. Probably New England in origin, first half of the 19th century. Wood peg construction. Seat height 15" seat is 19" across the front, 14 1/2" across back, and 13 1/2" deep; back stiles 41 5/8" high, rockers 24 1/2" long, front stretcher 17" slats are 11 5/8" across. Most interesting of the miniature paintings is that of a ship battle rendered on the bottom slat. One ship flying a red and white flag is firing on a ship flying what looks like the Liberian flag. But it could be a stylized version of an American flag. In that case it could be illustrating a battle that took place in the American Revolution or the War of 1812. Liberia was a country first colonized by repatriated African Americans in the first half of the 19th century, hence the flags similar design to the American flag. The flag illustrated on this chair came into existence on April 26, 1847, replacing a similar flag with a cross in the middle(The American flag itself had been flown in Liberia from 1837-1845) I'm hoping historians can shed some light on this as I have not been able to find a parallel example. CONDITION: Please see photographs. Overall in excellent condition. Structurally sound with no loose joints. Old repair to one of the leg-rocker joints. Seat is firm. Original painted surface with wear to painted figures and other decoration. I see no evidence that this chair was ever altered. Completely period. NOTE: I have enthusiastically collected antiques as a hobby for over 25 years now an

Pair of Chinese Hand Made Chairs circa 1850
This elegant pair of Chinese chairs was discovered on one of our trips to China many years ago. They have since occupied a place in our library where they added distinction quite grandly. Although we must sell them due to our retirement plans we are certain they will be a focal point wherever they are placed in their new home. The were quite finely refinished in China leaving traces of their age both to charm you and to echo their history. Pair Of Antique 19th Century Victorian Cane Chairs, Circa 1850-1890.
These are two victorian cane chairs for sale. As the photos show. One is in good condition, with only issue being a section of the cane seating that has become stretched out. Still quite comfortable and stable. The other chair needs to be completely remade. It has been painted black. And the cane seating is completely ripped. It also may need to be sanded, since the wood has some sun damage, and some slight splintering had just started to occur. But is minor enough that sanding it down to the raw wood will likely smooth all of this out. The chairs are approx 34" tall. 17" wide, and seats are 17" high. Bidding starts at $75. Shipping varies. But I can ship greyhound for a flat $75.00 Posted with

SET OF 5 ANTIQUE AM. EMPIRE DINING OR SIDE CHAIRS. Ca. 1830 - 1850 . NEEDLEPOINT
Offered here are the remaining 5 chairs from a large set of antique American Empire dining chairs. The chairs retain their original Roman numeral markings on the front inside of the seat support. This was a large and elegant set of chairs. Made, possibly in New York state, ca. 1830- 1850. These chairs are strong, sturdy and are ready to use. They measure 32" high. The seats are 18" high. Each seat measures 14" deep by 18" wide across the front. Each slip seat has been upholstered with needlepoint, which I would guess to be from the 1950s. The needlepoint background is a medium mocha or beige color, while the floral center motifs are each a different, but coordinating pattern of flowers. These seats are in very good antique condition showing no stains or rips. The finish on the chairs is OLD, but smooth and silky feeling. ... moreThere is one repair which I noticed, which is a repair to the moulding which secures the slip seat across the front of one chair. Please observe the last photo. Otherwise, these chairs are in very good antique condition. These chairs may be picked up from my home. Or if you wish to have them shipped to you, I have used 2 shippers who have proven to be reliable: Dusk2Dawn Courier services 610-419-7180 TSC Movers 888-219-6054 Both of these companies work with BUYERS for shipping antique furniture. (6) 1840's - 1850's Thumb Press Wood Chairs / New London Ohio Area / S. Kilburn
Up for auction from a recent estate sale in Northern Indiana is a set of 6 idenical thumb press wood chairs. As shown. Each is stamped on the bottom underside S KILBURN. I don't know much about furniture in general and can only describe and tell you about these by the knowlege I gained by doing some research. Here is some of the information I was able to find. The S. Kilburn stands for Stephen Kilburn who was born in Dorchester or Templeton Massachusetts. Around 1840 he and his family moved to"New London Village" Ohio and began building furniture. Stephen set up a chair factory sometime around 1850 on Inlot 202 in King's Corners and had sons and family members working at the factory. This set of chairs quite possibly may have been built prior to the opening of the factory or shortly thereafter. Henry Chapman(area's first ... moreprofessional embalmer) bought the factory sometime in the 1860's and the factory burned down sometime between 1870- 1873. The information I obtained also describes this type of chair as follows: The chairs themselves are made of various types of wood- apple, whitewood, pine, poplar, ash or oak. sorry- don't know my wood) Most are referred to as Windsor rabbit ear side chairs but locals from the New London area refer to them as kitchen chairs. The following information is quoted from an article by Thomas S. Neel as the chairs are described as follows: They have four spindles between the uprights in the back with pronounced bamboo style style turnings. The large saddle seat has an incised line around the edge. The cross piece at the top is attached with wood pegs. The legs taper at the bottom. All are marked S.Kilburn in block letters on the underside of the seat. All 6 chairs are in remarkably nice shape. One chair has a few specks of old white paint on the seat, very minimal. A couple of the chairs someone has added the sticky felt(tan) pieces to the very bottoms of each leg. I do not see where anyone has fixed or repaired any of the chairs. and do not see any cracks

C.1850, made of walnut and burl in the East Lake style. ... moreThere are many varieties of bottoms and tops to these chairs, and this pair is perfection with elaborate(but not TOO) carved tops and smooth rounding at the front bottoms with simple, elegant legs. They are extremely well balanced in scale and proportion and have classic lines. These are parlor chairs, but are perfect for a bedroom or corner of any room to pull out for extra seating. How about to hold your purse and sweater, the throw pillows from the bed, or your favorite cat or dog? The red velvet cushions are full, round and plumpy and the chairs are comfortable to sit on. The upholstery is in very good condition showing minimal wear as these were likely used more for"stuff" than people! They are shorter chairs, measuring 20" high at the top of the seat to the floor, 36" high at the back top, and the seats are 22" at widest point so hold a modern sized, uh, rump. Need a seat in the morning to put on your socks and shoes? These are beautiful AND functional and don't take up a lot of room! I showed them with a pair of modern pillows(not included) but you can put your own color/style on there to match your décor. I hate to throw this in. But
